Alex Smith attains ‘B’ standard for Commonwealth Games

British Athletic League – Premier Division

Cardiff – Saturday 10th May 2014

2012 Olympic hammer finalist Alex Smith and his fellow Hull hammer thrower and training partner James Bedford competed in the British Athletics League in Cardiff at the weekend.

The weather conditions were atrocious, with torrential rain and high winds.

Despite the conditions, Alex won the competition, with a throw of 70.41m. Achieving his first Commonwealth ‘B’ standard of the season

James Bedford finished in 5th place with a throw of 65.32m

Both Alex and James will be competing at the Loughborough International next week and they will be hoping for better weather.

James has been selected to represent England at the meeting and Alex will compete for the Loughborough team.

With the Commonwealth Games selection coming on the 2nd of June, there are only three opportunities remaining to achieve the qualification marks

Last year six English hammer throwers exceeded the 70m ‘B’ standard. The race to gain one of the three places in the England Hammer Team, for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is intensifying with each passing day.

Alex and James are doing their utmost to gain team selection and to represent their Country and of course their home City of Hull in the Commonwealth Games.
