‘Sainsbury’s’ 2014 UK School Games
The UK School Games is an annual event which is sponsored by Sainsbury’s and supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.
Over 1600 sports stars competed across 12 sports between the 4th and 7th September 2014 in 9 different venues across the city of Manchester.
The sports covered by the games were Athletics – Badminton – Cycling – Fencing – Gymnastics – Hockey – Judo – Rugby Sevens – Swimming – Table Tennis – Volleyball – Wheelchair Basketball
The UK is split into 8 regions for the games and competitors from Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire compete for North East England. The other teams represented were the countries of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the English regions of North West, Midlands, South West and South East. (Wales were not represented at this years games and the rumours at the stadium surrounded talk of travel arrangements).
All the Athletics events were held on Friday 5th September at Sport City Stadium, which is part of the Etihad Complex. The Manchester weather was very kind to us and the sun shone throughout the day. It was hot and humid.
Two of the outstanding young athletes at Kingston upon Hull Athletic Club were chosen to represent North East England. Charlotte Paterson and Maggie Okul.
Charlotte Paterson won the silver medal in the 100 metres race in a recorded time of 12.17.
This was yet another fantastic performance by Charlotte in what has been an outstanding season.
Maggie Okul finished in 4th place in the Hammer competition with a throw of 50.30m.
Things didn’t go quite right on the day for Maggie but it wasn’t for the lack of ability and effort. She is a very talented athlete and will be back all the stronger at her next competition.
