Cleckheaton – Saturday & Sunday – 6th & 7th September 2014

York-based Clare Blunt, one of Kingston’s longest serving athletes, took advantage of her residential qualification to compete in the championship event in the senior ladies event. Best known as a pole vaulter, an event which has brought her medals at county, regional and national levels this season Clare took the opportunity to make her debut as a heptathlete in her last competition of the season. Despite her main event not featuring in the 7 event competition she was extremely competitive throughout and ended the weekend with a silver medal.

An early morning start brought the first of a number of personal bests clocking 15.93 s. In the 100 metres hurdles before producing a season’s best of 1.48m in the high jump.

Having no previous competitive experience as a thrower 6.58m in the shot was a good effort to maintain her overall position which was then improved with her fastest ever 200m of 27.11s.

Day 2 started with Clare’s best individual performance of the weekend, a huge personal best of 5.14m in the long jump.

A safe javelin throw of 18.97m after fouls in the 1st and 2nd rounds secured modest points but a hard earned second place overall was secured with another new PB of 2:44.92 in the 800m.

This gave Clare a final total of 3,719 points and a 70 point gap to the 3rd placed athlete.
