Leeds A.C. Indoor Open Meeting
Sunday 8th February 2015
Medals and personal bests were the order of the day for the contingent of Kingston upon Hull athletes who continued their indoor season at the Leeds City Open at the John Charles Sports Centre at the weekend.
Ciara Andrews set the ball rolling in the first event of the day taking gold in the under 13’s 60m hurdles with a new best performance of 10.2 sec. Soon afterwards she collected a second gold in the 60m, again improving her lifetime best to 8.8 sec. She then rounded off a very good day with third place in the shot with a putt of 6.48m.
In the same age group Emily Dye making her indoor debut made a huge breakthrough in the long jump, smashing her personal best and clearing the 4 metre barrier for the first time. A best jump of 4.11m gave her a clear win over the rest of the field. Emily also took 4th in the 60m hurdles (11.5 sec) and 60m (9.1 sec) showing much promise for the forthcoming outdoor season.
Paige Mathers produced the run of her life in the under15 girls 60m hurdles reducing her previous best by 0.8 sec, a huge margin over such a short distance. She was rewarded with a time of 10.5 sec, and entry standard for next month’s England Athletics national championships. Paige also recorded a new best time of 9.0 sec over 60m and finished an outstanding day’s work with a bronze medal in the high jump with a height of 1.35m.
Fellow under 15 and training partner Libby Wheeler had the satisfaction of leaping to a new personal best of 4.98m when finishing 3rd in a high class long jump event along with the frustration of still being a tantalising 2cm short of her national entry standard. She took a second bronze medal in the 60m, 0.1 sec inside her previous best time.
In the under 17 events Sian Kerry added to the collection of personal bests with 10.3 sec in the 60m hurdles and 9.0 in the 60m while Maddie Storr did likewise with an outstanding 8.7 sec in the 60m on her track debut and a 1cm improvement to 4.39m in her more familiar long jump event. Bryony Underwood equalled her season’s best of 1.45m in the high jump and produced a putt of 6.87m in a rare outing in the shot.
The outstanding performer in the under15 boy’s age group was the rapidly improving Shaun Kerry. Fresh from his outstanding bronze medal in last week’s Northern Championships Shaun took gold in Leeds with a putt of 10.72m, almost a metre further than his previous best. His talents are not just confined to the shot circle as he proved with yet another best performance of 8.4 sec in the 60m.
Adam Coles also took gold in his specialist 60m hurdles (9.6 sec) along with bronze in the 60m with a 9.2 sec clocking, reducing his previous best by 0.1 sec.
Kayden Morgan is another of our very promising under 15 athletes. He took the gold medal in the long jump with a season’s best effort of 5.06m. He also won silver in the 60 metres with a new PB of 7.70s.
The under 17’s saw Macalley Morgan, not to be out done by his younger brother win the gold medal in the under 60 metres with a new PB of 7.70s and then go on to take bronze in the long jump with a season’s best performance of 5.46m
Nathan Hood was the silver medallist in the under 17’s 60 metre hurdles, where he set a new PB of 10.80s. Nathan also put in a season’s best effort in the long jump with a leap of 5.25m.
Harry Stutely won the bronze medal in the 60 metres where he was just a whisker outside of his personal best with a time of 7.80s and put in a season’s best performance in the long jump with his best effort on the day of 4.24m.
Alex Grant was our only representative in the under 13 boy’s competition. He recorded new PB’s in each of his 3 events. He won bronze in the 60 metres with a time of 9.6s, picked up a second bronze in the shot putt with a throw of 4.68m and claimed 5th place in the long jump with a leap of 3.25m.
