Birmingham Indoor Games
National Indoor Stadium
Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th February 2015
The Birmingham Games were held last weekend at the National Indoor Stadium which is situated in that city. A top quality field assembled at the games and competition was intense. Athletes attended from all parts of the UK, including the Channel Islands. Three of Kingston’s senior sprinters were amongst the competitors.
Luke Giblin arrived at the National Stadium having won the silver medal in the 200 metres at the Northern Championships in January. He competed in the 60 metres race in Birmingham, where he qualified from the heats and took his place in the semi-finals. He put in a strong performance in the semi, recording a time of 7.02s but it was not enough on the day to reach the final.
Callum Giles competed in the 200 metres event and he too was a medallist at the recent Northern Championships where he had picked up the bronze medal in the 200 metres. He got off to a flying start in Birmingham, winning his first heat and setting the 2nd fastest heat time of day with a run of 22.39s. He progressed to the semi-finals where took 3rd place in his semi and set a new indoor PB of 22.01s. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to give him a place in the final. He was just half a second away from qualifying.
Asher Gammon is a new face on the athletics circuit this season. He falls into the senior age category but the Birmingham Games was only Asher’s 3rd competitive race. Unlike Luke and Callum who are both very experienced athletes. Asher ran in the heats of the 60 metres and he recorded a time 7.58s which was a good performance from him.
All three athletes have achieved the qualifying times to compete in the England Indoor Championships which will be staged at the EIS Stadium in Sheffield on the weekend of Saturday 28th February and Sunday 1st March. Luke and Callum will go there with real confidence whilst Asher will be relishing the experience. His 4th competitive race will be in the National Championships.
