2015 Humberside Schools Cross Country Championships

A total of 292 young athletes contested this year’s Humberside Schools cross country Championships, which were held at Baysgarth School in Barton on Humber. It was a cold day, and the course was wet with some icy patches and an awful lot of mud.

Kingston were represented in all but one of the races and provided four of the race winners.

In the senior boy’s race (for under 20’s) four of our athletes finished in the first six, including the race winner Harry Powell who completed the course in a time of 20:57s. Harry has made a splendid start to 2015. In January he won the Humberside County Championships in Grimsby and finished in an impressive 13^th place in the Northern Championships in Pontefract. Shaun Smith took second place in the race recording a time of 22:12s for his run. He was also a County Champion at Grimsby in January and has been in excellent form in recent months. Josh Taylor-Brown has had some niggling injuries recently but he put those behind him with a fine 5^th place finish in 23:56s. Jack Michaels had his first competitive outing of 2015 and he crossed the line in 6^th place just two tenths of a second behind his club mate Josh.

The Intermediate Boys race (under 17’s) was won by Jack Brothwell who covered the course in 18:58s. Jack was a silver medallist at the Humberside County Championships and is another of our athletes who have been in splendid form in recent months. Adam Egan who has just made the move up to the under 17’s finished in 10^th place in a time of 20:21s. Adam was a bronze medallist at Grimsby in January.

In the Year 7 Boy’s (under 15’s) Finlay Pickering backed up his gold medal at the County Championships and his superb 6^th place finish at the Northern Championships by picking up another victory here. He dominated the race and finished 26 seconds ahead of the 2^nd place finisher in 6:48s. Harvey Newton took 3^rd place and he crossed the line in a time of 7:16s. Matthew Lyons finished in 6^th place and he completed the course in a time of 7:36s. Ben Copley who is better known at the club as a shot putter, a javelin thrower and a sometimes footballer finished in the middle positions and returned a time of 8:19s for his efforts.

In the Junior Boys Joe Seed finished in the middle positions in the race and he covered the course in a time of 17:52s.

 The Junior Girls event saw 6 of our athletes in competition, and 3 of them finished in the first five. Connie Mounsey finished in 2^nd place with an excellent performance which saw her complete the course in 12:58s. Abbie Haigh finished in 4^th position in another very good time of 13:05s. Sophie Sweeting followed Abbie over the finish line for 5^th place in a time of 13:14s. Daisy Evans finished in 8^th place in 13:48s Becky Chivers was in 24^th place in 14:53s and Sophie Huckstep crossed the line in 28^th with a time of 14:59s.

Jodie Martin was the winner of the Year 7 Girls race with a time of 7:58s, 18 seconds ahead of the 2^nd placed finisher. Molly Chadwick took 5^th place in 8:33s and Rosie Shepherd in her second outing of the year finished in 18^th with a time of 9:03s. Katy McCabe one of our newest members finished in 22^nd in 9:19s. Also contesting the Year 7’s race were Niamh Derbyshire who ran 9:31s, Gina De Lancey who clocked 9:37 and Jess Townsend with10:01s.

In the Intermediate Girls race Amy Greenacre had her first outing of 2015. She completed the course in a time of 19:03s which earned her a 15^th place finish.

In the team competitions East Riding Schools won six of the seven race categories. They were victorious in the Boys races at Senior – Intermediate – and Year 7 and in the Girls categories at Intermediate – Junior and Year 7.
