British Masters Indoor and Winter Throws Competition
Lee Valley Stadium, London
Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th March 2015
Kingston-upon-Hull AC’s Darren Gibson and John Twiddle travelled to London last weekend to compete at the British Masters Indoor and Winters Throws Championships which were taking place at the Lee Valley stadium. With almost 600 athletes entered, this is one of the biggest events on the ‘Masters’ athletes calendar.
In the outdoor throws Darren focussed on his specialist event the hammer, taking 4th place with the 6kg hammer in the highly competitive M50-55 age group with a throw of 41.03m.
Moving down an age group and up in weight to the 7.26kg hammer, John took the silver medal in the M45 competition with a throw of 38.98m. He also took part in the 35lb weight throw, taking the gold with a throw of 9.90m.
Having gone back into the warmth of the Lee Valley indoor stadium, John’s best performance of the weekend came in the shot putt with a silver medal-winning effort of 12.42m, his best throw in two years as an over-45 athlete.
Both athletes will go back into training in preparation for the outdoor season, which begins in a few weeks time, the first event being Kingston’s Open meeting at the Costello Stadium on Sunday the 12th of April.
