Inter Counties Cross Country Championships

Cofton Park, Birmingham – Saturday 7th March 2015

The 2015 Inter Counties Cross Country Championships were held in Cofton Park, Birmingham on Saturday 7th of March. A total of 2488 athletes competed in the championships and they represented their Counties, from all parts of England, Scotland and Wales.

The designated athletics region for Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire is Humberside and all the athletes from this area compete under that name.

Eleven of the clubs youth and junior athletes represented Humberside at the championships.

In the under 20 men’s race which was contested over a distance of 8 kilometres our representatives were Harry Powell and Josh Taylor-Brown.

Harry has been in excellent form over the last few months and he put in another good performance at Birmingham. In a strong field he finished 34th out of 187 runners, he ran the course in 24:53s. Josh is working his way back to full fitness after injuries. He completed the course, finishing in the lower half of the race and finished with a time of 29:32s.

In the under 17 men’s event Kingston’s Shaun Smith and Jack Brothwell ran the 6 kilometres course.

Shaun is another of our athletes who has been running really well in recent times. Fortune did not go his way at Birmingham. He started a little too quickly, he was then shoved over. He is a real competitor and he battled on but had to settle for a middle placing among the 274 runners, he finished the race in 22.06s. Jack too didn’t have one of his best races but it wasn’t for any lack of effort. He completed the course in 23.08s and also finished in the middle positions.

The under15 girl’s race saw a trio of Kingston Athletes in competition. They all completed the course and all finished in the lower half of the 290 competitors.

Natalie Bell ran the 4 kilometres in a recorded time of 22:29s. Sophie Sweeting crossed the finishing line in 22:53s and Martha Savage in 25:13s.

The under 13 boys saw three of our youngsters Matthew Lyons, Robert Smith and Joe Seed amongst the 300 starters in the 3 kilometres race. All completed the course, finishing in the lower half of the race.

Matthew crossed the finish line in 14:07s. Robert in 15:23s and Joe finished in 15:37s.

Abbie Haigh was our sole contestant in the under13 girl’s event. She was under the weather on the day and really should not have taken part but she is a great competitor and insisted that she wanted to run. She took her place on the start line, as one of the 305 contestants. She completed the 3 kilometres course in a time of 15:19s and finished in the lower positions.
