Spring Open Meeting – Costello Stadium, Hull

Sunday 12th April 2015

The 2015 track and field season got underway at the Costello Stadium when athletes from far and wide travelled over to East Yorkshire to compete in the annual Spring Open, hosted by Kingston upon Hull Athletic Club.

It seems an eternity since the last track and field season ended back in September of 2014. The track athletes have been running in both road and cross country competitions and in the indoor competitions and championships and a lot of them have had a very successful autumn and winter. The jumpers, pole vaulters and shot putters have also had their successes at the indoor events. However the long throwers, hammer, discus and javelin have had training sessions and fitness and strength and conditioning in preparation for the new season.

The weather on the day was extremely disappointing with a strong gusting wind chilling everyone to the bone and in the afternoon the rain arrived to give us a soaking finish. The athletes of course took it all in their stride.

Pole Vault

The Kingston upon Hull Open meeting provided the first opportunity for the club’s Pole Vault group to show how their winter training had gone. It has been a frustrating time for the group since the Pole Vault equipment at Costello Stadium has only just been fixed in order for them to do any serious event practice since the stanchions were broken last September.

Ben Stutely, in his first competition since joining the group as an 11 year old last September cleared 1.90m and was very close in his three attempts to also achieving 2m.

Natalie Varga produced a personal best in winning the under 17 competition with a first-time clearance of 2.60m, whilst training partner Rebekah Arandle, who hasn’t competed for a couple of years through a persistent leg injury, won the Senior Women’s competition with a height of 2.70m.

There was an exciting Men’s under17 competition in which the lead swung from one vaulter to another. The result was a personal best for both Nathan Hood and Harry Stutely. Both clearing 3.10m but Harry took the gold medal on count-back, having less failures than Nathan throughout the tense competition.

This was a promising start to the season for the group in an event which is technically difficult and requires a lot of courage.
