Under 20’s International Meeting
Cardiff International Sports Stadium
Wales versus England
Wednesday 29th July 2015
The annual Welsh International meeting was held in the Cardiff International Sports Stadium, on the evening of Wednesday 29th July 2015.
The competition covered every track and field athletics discipline and England chose three athletes to represent their country in each of the events.
For the women’s hammer competition the selectors chose the champions of the three English athletics regions to don the England vest.
The Southern Champion Rebecca Keating, the Midlands Champion Katie Lambert and the Northern Champion, Kingston upon Hull Athletic Clubs Maggie Okul.
The three girls know each other well and have been involved in many tussles in throwing circles all over the country. Their last meeting was at The English Schools Championships on the 11th of July, where Rebecca came out on top with Maggie taking the silver and Katie having an awful day and failing to make the final cut.
The hammer competition got under way at 8:00pm. It was a dry and sunny evening but it turned chilly when the sun disappeared.
All the throwers made cautious and some of them edgy starts, but from round two it was pretty clear that the three English girls would be sorting out the medals between themselves.
Maggie, who was performing in her 3rd Welsh International meeting, took the silver medal with a throw of 50.36m. Rebecca won the bronze with 48.41m and the gold went to Katie with 50.77m.
Maggie loved every moment of her time spent in Cardiff and she was delighted with her medal. She met up with many of her old friends in the England Team and made some new ones too.
She got back into Hull on Thursday afternoon and went straight into the 5-o-clock training session with her coaches Dave and Di Smith at Costello.
Next on the agenda is the Inter Counties Championships which will be held at the Bedford International Stadium, this coming weekend 1st and 2nd of August. This is a senior championship event and Maggie has been selected to represent Humberside.
