English Masters Athletics Association
Inter Area Challenge – Solihull – Sunday 19th July 2015
Following their successes earlier in the year at the Northern Masters Championships, Kingston’s Darren Gibson and John Twiddle were selected to represent the Northern Masters team at the English Masters Athletics Association’s Inter-Area Challenge match at Solihull on the 19th July.
In the Over 35’s age group John was selected in three events the shot putt, discus and hammer throw. The discus was the first event of the three. John secured maximum points with a season’s best 33.98m just ahead of pre-event favourite Peter Roberts, who was representing Wales.
In the shot Graham Porterfield of Scotland took an early lead with a throw of 11.43m, however John’s 3rd round effort of 11.96m took the lead and proved enough to take first place.
In the Over 35s hammer John (38.44m) took second place behind Midland’s Rob Careless’ throw of 48.07m.
In the over 50’s event Darren Gibson took third place with 35.39m.
Sue Hearnshaw (now Richardson), the Olympic Long Jump bronze medallist in Los Angeles 1984 and formerly of Hull Spartan AC but now competing for City of York, also represented the Northern Masters team finishing 3rd in the triple jump with 8.09m.
The final results table left Northern Masters in 5th place overall
