Mia Brocklehurst & Evie Newton – Athlete Profiles
Mia Brocklehurst and Evie Newton are members of Kingston’s junior training group, they are good friends, and they currently take part in competitions, held in the under 13 age category. They both made their competitive debuts for the club during 2015.
The girl’s first outing of the 2015 athletics year, came on the 14th of March, during the indoor season, at the ‘Tom Pinks’ relays and field events competition, staged at the English Institute of Sports Stadium in Sheffield. They travelled there as members of the Kingston Junior Team, for an event which is one of the highlights on the junior calendar, and is one of the favourite events of all the of the clubs junior athletes.
Mia Brocklehurst was a member of two Kingston relay teams, both of which reached the event finals. In the ‘Keeping up with Paula’ race final, the team just missed out on the medals, finishing in 4th place. The ‘Over and Under’ final saw Mia’s team put in a great effort which almost snatched them a bronze medal, finishing with the same time (1:18.9s) as the Crewe and Nantwich team, but they had to settle for 4th place, with the bronze medal going to their opponents. In the field events Mia saw action in the soft javelin competition, where she finished in 5th place.
Evie Newton represented the Kingston team in the field events, where she competed in the weight for distance event, taking a 5th place finish.
Evie and Mia also made their track and field debuts together, at the Kingston Spring Open, held at the Costello Stadium on the 12th of April. They both entered the same events, the 80 metres and 150 metres sprints, and the 800 metres race. Mia took the bragging rights in the sprints, with Evie coming out on top in the middle distance race.
The 25th of April saw the girls make their debuts in the Humberside League, at a meeting in Grimsby. They both represented Kingston in the 100 metres, 70 metres hurdles and 800 metres races.
At the Humberside County Championships on the 23rd of May, Mia ran in the heats of both the 100 and 200 metres, with Evie seeing action in the long jump final and the 100 metres heats.
Evie Newton was given her National Youth Development League debut, at Doncaster’s ‘Keepmoat’ Stadium on the 30th of May, where she represented Kingston in the 800 metres race.
There was one more outing during 2015, this being at the Kingston Young Athletes Open meeting, at Costello on the 3rd of September, with Evie Newton competing in the 800 metres race and in the long jump event, and Mia Brocklehurst in the 100 and the 200 metres sprints.
This was a satisfactory debut season for both Mia and Evie, they gained valuable competition experience, and also an insight as to the standards they must try to achieve, in order to progress on their athletics journey.
Both the girls are training hard for the 2016 season, and are eagerly looking forward, to ‘push on’ next year.
Evie Watson told me that her main ambitions for 2016 were:-
“To get below 15 seconds for the hundred” (metres)
“Go below 3 minutes for the 800” (metres)
“To go over 4 metres in the long jump”
Mia Brocklehurst told me:-
“I really enjoy sprinting, I want to do as well as I can”
“I’d like to get into the league team, and I want to do the Humberside meetings”
