The Leeds City indoor Open Meetings are a popular destination for Kingston’s youth and junior athletes, and seven of them made the journey over to the West Riding to compete at the 10th of January event.

14 year old Adam Coles is a talented sprinter, hurdler and long jumper, and the 2015 track and field season saw him crowned the 80 metre hurdles champion, at Mays Humberside Championships, and he was also the silver medallist at the 2015 Northern Championships. The coming track & field season will bring a move up in age group to the under 17’s.

Adam competed in three events at Leeds, the under 20 men’s 60 metres race, where he took 2nd place and ran a new PB of 7.6s. In the under 20 men’s long jump, another new PB of 5.50m, gave him 3rd place, and he was the winner of the under 17 men’s 60 metre hurdles race, setting his 3rd new PB of the day, with a run of 9.2s.

14 year old Libby Wheeler is an excellent long jumper and a more than useful sprinter. The 2015 track & field season saw her crowned both the East Riding Schools and Humberside Schools long jump champion, and she was a long jump finalist at the English Schools Championships. 2016 sees Libby move up to the under 17 age category.

She competed in the under 20’s 60 metre sprint and the long jump at the Leeds meeting. In the 60 metres she ran a new PB of 8.3s, for 4th place, and in the long jump competition she took 5th place with a season’s best effort of 5.06m.

The next competition on the agenda for both Adam and Libby is the forthcoming Northern Championships, which will be held at the English Institute of Sports Stadium in Sheffield.

Alex Grant is a member of our junior training group and he has just made the move up to the under 13’s age category. He is another talented young sprinter and long jumper, who was the 80 metre silver medallist and 150 metre bronze medallist at the 2015 Humberside Championships.

Alex also took on three events, the 60 metres race where he took 2nd place and recorded a new PB of 9.5s, the high jump, where another new PB of 1.15m gave him 5th place, and the long jump, where a season’s best effort of 3.55m saw him collect a 9th place finish.

 

 

Another of Kingston’s promising junior athletes is Holly Adams, who also competes in the under 13 category, and is starting to make a name for herself in the shot putt circle, with some first class performances. In addition to being an excellent thrower, she is also a good sprinter. The Leeds meeting saw Holly compete in the 60 metre sprints as well as the shot competition.

She was the race winner in the 60 metres, where she ran a new PB of 9.2s. She claimed her second victory of the day in the shot event, where she threw a distance of 8.18m.

2015 was the debut season for 13 year old Katie Smith, who is a fine sprinter and hurdler. She was a silver medallist at the Humberside Championships, in both the 70 metre hurdles and the 100 metres races. She also made her county debut at the Northern Inter County Championships.

The 60 metre hurdles and the 60 metre sprints were her chosen events at this meeting. Katie was the winner of the 60 metre hurdles, where she ran a season’s best time of 10.5s. In the 60 metre sprint she took 3rd place, running another season’s best time of 9.0s.

13 year old Emily Dye is a sprinter, hurdler and long jumper, and is no stranger to the high jump and shot events. She has been with Kingston for 3 years now and represents the club in the National Youth Development League fixtures.

Emily was in action at Leeds in the 60 metre sprints and the long jump competition. She ran a new PB of 9.0s, to take 2nd place in the 60 metres, and she jumped a season’s best of 4.29m, for 4th place in the long jump.

13 year old Gina De Lancey is equally at home, both on the track and in the field, she is a good runner, jumper and thrower. She has been with the club for 3 years, and was the Humberside hurdles champion in 2013, and the bronze medallist in the event in 2014. The 2015 season saw her win a Quadrathlon event at the Humberside League meeting at the Costello Stadium.

Gina was in action in the 60 metre sprint and the shot event at this meeting. She took 3rd place in the 60 metres, where she ran a new PB of 9.0s. The shot saw her take a 7th place finish, throwing a new PB of 6.39m.
