English Schools Cross Country Championships
Woolaton Park, Nottingham – Saturday 5th March 2016
Six of Kingston’s youth and junior middle distance and distance runners were selected to represent the County team at the English Schools cross country championships, which were held at Woolaton Park in Nottingham on Saturday the 5th of March.
Under 20 Men
A total of 310 runners took to the field in the under 20 men’s 7 kilometres race, where the Kingston representatives were Baldvin Magnusson, Jack Brothwell and Jonny Beharrell.
Baldvin Magnusson has had an outstanding 2015/16 cross country season, putting in a top class performance at last November’s British Cross Challenge, and following that with more of the same at January’s Northern Championships and followed it up again with a tremendous run at the English National Championships in Leicestershire in February. He was at it once more in Nottingham’s Woolaton Park, where he covered the seven kilometres course in a time 22:19s, to take an excellent 37th place out of the 310 runners.
Jack Brothwell has put in some mighty efforts during the current cross country season. He too was at Liverpool for November’s British Cross Challenge, where he did well, putting in his usual 100% effort. January was an excellent month for him, with a top third finish at the Northern Championships, and winning gold at the County Championships. Jack finished in the middle positions at Nottingham, where he covered the course in a time of 24:04s.
Injuries put Jonny Beharrell out of action for a of total fifteen months, missing the whole of the 2014/15 cross country and indoor season, and the entire 2015 track & field season. He made his competitive comeback last November at one of the weekly Hull park runs and then steadily built up at indoor meetings during December of last year, and through this January and February. This Championship meeting took him back out on to the cross country circuit where he finished in the middle third positions, and he ran the course in a time of 24:21s.
Under 17 Women
Kingston’s Charlotte Dalton and Amy Greenacre were in competition in a field of 343 runners, in the under 17 women’s 3.9 kilometres race.
Charlotte Dalton is a tri-athlete as well as a middle distance and cross country runner, and she has been with the club since 2014. She was the 1500 metres silver medallist at the 2015 County Championships, and represents the club in the Youth Development League Fixtures.
The English Schools cross country meeting was her first representative outing of 2016, and she finished inside the top third of the field, running the course in a time of 14:39s.
This competition was Amy Greenacre’s first outing since last October’s Northern Counties Relay Championships at Sheffield. She is a middle distance and cross country runner who has been with Kingston since 2012. She completed the Nottingham course in a recorded time of 16:38s, finishing in the bottom half of the field.
Under 15 Girls
Jodie Martin has been with Kingston since 2014, she is both a middle distance and cross country runner, a good long jumper too, and a good sprinter as her 100 metres bronze at last year’s County track & field Championships would attest. Her first outing of 2016 brought her the silver medal at January’s County cross country Championships. This was her 3rd competitive outing of the year and Jodie was one of 339 runners in the under 15 girls 3.5 kilometres race. She completed the course in a time of 14:35s, and finished in the middle positions.
