Northern Masters Athletics Track and Field championships

Kingston’s Darren Gibson and John Twiddle travelled across to the Leigh Sports Village on the 1st of May, to compete in the Northern Masters Athletics track & field championships.

The first event of the day was the hammer throw which took place in cold and rainy weather.

Darren competing in the M55 age group had a close battle with Steve Thomas of Barrow in Furness, finally coming out on top to take the gold medal.

John was involved in a similarly close battle in the M45 competition with local rival Matthew Hammond of Scunthorpe AC. Matthew finally took the gold by a metre with John taking the silver.

The battle between John and Matthew was continued in the discus throw, which was hindered by cool and damp conditions. John again took the silver medal, with Matthew taking the gold.

Finally the tables were turned in the Shot competition, which saw John collect his eighth successive Northern Masters Shot putt gold medal.
