Cleethorpes AC Open Meeting

There was a fair turnout of Kingston athletes at the King George V Stadium in Grimsby, on Bank Holiday Monday the 30th of May, for the Cleethorpes Athletic Clubs “Open Meeting”.
Under 11’s
Two of our junior groups under 11 girls, Tonisha Pickering and Freya Vidal, qualified from the heats of the 80 metres sprints to book their places in the event final.
Both of the girls ran new personal best times of 12.7s in the final, which saw Freya claim a 5th place finish, with Tonisha taking 6th.
Their next competition was in the 150 metres sprints. Freya went in heat two, where she took 3rd place and ran a new PB of 24.3s. Tonisha also ran a new PB of 24.5s in heat 3, where she also finished in third place.
They were in further action in the long jump competition, where Tonisha took 3rd place with a new personal best jump of 3.44m. Freya also jumped a new PB of 3.30m, for a 5th place finish.
10 year old Finlay Southcoat joined our junior groups last summer and he made his club debut on the 30th of April this year.
Finlay took on both of the sprint races at the Cleethorpes meeting. He safely negotiated the heats and qualified for both of the finals.
In the 80 metres final he took 3rd place and recorded a new PB of 12.2s. A second new PB of 23.4s saw him finish in 5th place in the 150 metres final.
Further competition followed in the 600 metres race, where Finlay was a 3rd place finisher, running a time of 2:07.2s.
Under 13’s
11 year old Lucy Parker joined our junior training groups this April. This meeting saw Lucy make her debut for the club, in the first heat of the 80 metres sprints. She took 3rd place in the heat and posted a new PB of 14.9s.
Lucy returned to action in the long jump event, where she set herself a new personal best benchmark of 2.82m
Five of Kingston’s under13 boys were in action, with four of them qualifying from the heats, to contest the 100 metres final.
Owen Robinson took 2nd place in the race, where he ran a new PB of 14.0s. Fabian Vidal took 3rd place and he too posted a new PB of 14.3s, with Connor Pickering in 4th place in a new PB of 14.4s and Harvey Southcoat 5th with a new PB of 14.5s.
Owen Robinson took another 2nd place in the 200 metres final, where he ran a time of 30.4s. Harvey Southcoat was 4th in the final and he recorded a time of 32.3s.
Connor Pickering was the winner of the long jump competition, with a leap of 4.37m. Fabian Vidal took 2nd place, with his jump of 4.34m and Owen Robinson was 5th with 3.87m.
Connor collected a second victory of the day in the shot putt, where he threw a distance of 8.55m. Fabian took 2nd place in the competition, with a throw of 7.12m and Alex Chivers was in 4th place with a throw of 5.15m.
Under 15’s
Rose Hewitt came through the heats of the under 15 girl’s 100 metres and took her place in the final, where she ran a new PB of 13.9s, to take 8th place. Rose ran a new PB of 28.3s in the heats of the 200 metres to earn her place in the final, where she took 4th place and ran a time of 28.5s.
Imogen Hayhurst and Katie Smith competed in heat one of the under 15 girls 100 metres, which saw Imogen run a new PB of 14.7s, to take 5th place in the race. Katie’s run of 16.7s saw her finish in 6th place.
Imogen Hayhurst was the winner of the 200 metres hurdles race, where she recorded a new PB of 35.5s.
Katie Smith took 5th place in the 75 metres hurdles race, where she ran a season’s best time of 13.9s.
Becky Chivers finished in 6th place in the 800 metres race, where she ran a time of 2:55.1s. The javelin is Becky’s strongest event and she was the winner of the competition, throwing a distance of 27.88m.
In the discus throw, Jess Townsend took 2nd place with a throw of 19.24m, with Becky Chivers taking 3rd with a throw of 16.72m, whilst Ellie Townsend, twin sister of Jess, threw a new PB of 11.48m for 6th place.
In the boys 100 metres final Shaun Kerry took 2nd place and recorded a new PB of 11.8s. Tyler Thompson also ran a new PB of 12.8s, to take 4th place.
Sam Westhead had his first run out of 2016 at this meeting. He was the winner of the 200 metres hurdles race, where he ran a new PB of 31.7s. He was also in action in the 300 metres race, where he took 3rd place and posted another new PB of 43.1s.
Harvey Southcoat competed in the 800 metres race, where he took 4th place and ran a time of 2:52.4s.
Out on the field two of the country’s finest young throwers were displaying their prodigious talents. Both of them are in the top ten rankings in the UK.
Ben Copley is the holder of two Northern Championship track & field titles, in the discus throw and the shot putt. In addition he is also the County discus champion.
Shaun Kerry holds the Northern track & field hammer title and is also the indoor shot champion. He is also the holder of the County hammer, shot and javelin crowns.
Ben Copley was the winner of the discus competition, with a new personal best throw of 39.51m. Club mate Antony Mould took 6th place with a best effort of 16.79m. Shaun Kerry was victorious in the shot event, with a throw of 12.43m and Antony Mould took 5th place with 6.36m.
Shaun and Ben were in direct competition in the javelin throw, which saw Shaun take the spoils with a throw of 40.25m. Ben had to settle for 2nd place with a throw of 37.63m.
Tyler Thompson was back in action in both the high jump and long jump events. He took 2nd place in the high jump, with a clearance at 1.45m. His best effort of 4.26m gave him 4th place in the long jump.
Under 20’s
Training partners Sophie O’Hara and Nicole Gray were in action in the discus competition, which saw Sophie emerge victorious, with a season’s best throw of 34.74m. Nicole took 2nd place with a new personal best throw of 32.02m.
The 2016 Northern Indoor Championships 60 metres and 200 metres finalist, Eliot Gay, was in competition in the senior men’s 100 metres races.
He was drawn in the third heat, where a great run of 11.0s, a new PB, saw him win the race and qualify for the final.
Another very good run of 11.1s, in a strong field of athletes, gave him 4th place in the final.
