Two Junior Open Meetings

Douglas Bedford Memorial Open meeting

Thornes Park Wakefield – Sunday 11th September 2016

 

On Sunday 11th of September 10 year old Tilly Cairns travelled over to Wakefield with her family to compete at the annual ‘Douglas Bedford’ memorial open meeting, which was staged at Wakefield Harriers home track at Thornes Park.

Tilly has been training with Kingston upon Hull Athletic Club since July of 2015 she is a promising young sprinter who has made excellent progress during the last 12 months. She has been in competition this year in the Humber track and field league meetings and at open events at other Yorkshire clubs. She made her mark at her first County Championship event this May where she won both the 80 metre and 150 metres sprint titles and took silver in the 600 metres final. She turns 11 next January and will be eligible for selection for the junior team’s 2017 campaign in the UK Youth Development League.

At the Wakefield meeting Tilly chose to compete in the 80 metre sprint and also in the long jump. She ran a new PB of 12.06s in the 80 metres race clipping 0.24 of a second off her previous best time which saw her finish in 2nd place. The long jump event was contested by a field of 25 athletes and Tilly finished in a commendable 6th place jumping a new PB of 3.38m, which was 31 centimetres further than her previous best.

 

Lincoln Games Open Meeting

Yarborough Leisure Centre – Sunday 11th September 2016 

 

Two sisters from our junior training groups, Lucy and Holly Cresswell journeyed with their family down to the Lincoln Wellington club’s home track at the Yarborough Leisure Centre in the Minster city for the Lincoln Games Open meeting.

Holly Cresswell competes in the under11 age category and she saw action in the 60 metres sprint race and also in the long jump event. She was involved in the first of the 60 metre races where her run of 12.06s saw her finish in 8th place. In the long jump competition Holly’s effort of 2.54m saw her take 5th place.

 

In the under 13’s competition older sister Lucy Cresswell was in action in three events and she set herself new PB’s in all three.

She began in the first of the 100 metre races where she took 6th place and ran a new PB of 16.08s, taking 1.12 seconds off her previous best time. The long jump saw her take 3rd place with a new PB of 3.69m, one metre and twenty centimetres further than her previous best. The shot event brought Lucy another 3rd place finish and her third new PB of the day with a throw of 5.72m, which was 3 metres and 16 centimetres ahead of her old best mark.
