Northern Athletics Indoor ‘Open Meeting’

The 2016 indoor season got underway in northern England on Saturday the 12th of November at the superb facilities provided by the English Institute of Sports Stadium in Sheffield.
Four of Kingston’s young athletes travelled over to Sheffield to compete at the season opener.
10 year old Tilly Cairns had an outstanding track & field season in 2016 winning the County titles in both the 80 metres and 150 metres sprint finals ay Mays County Championship meeting. She has worn the Kingston vest in the Humber track league fixtures and in matches in the York summer league. Over the course of the year Tilly has taken 1.42 seconds off her 80 metres PB and 1.80 seconds from her 150 metres best.
There was no race in Tilly’s age group at Sheffield so she had to compete in race 7 of the 60 metres sprints for athletes aged over 13 but under15 years. There were eight girls in the race and she finished in a very creditable 4th place and her run of 9.29s was a new PB over the 60 metre distance.
2016 has also been a huge year for 13 year old Brody Hinson a year which has seen him do the sprint double at both the County Championships and the County Schools Championships. He made his bow in the Kingston junior team putting in some impressive performances in the National Youth Development league matches and made two appearances for the County team at both of the Inter county Championship meetings.
Brody took on the 60 metres and 150 metres sprints at this meeting. He was drawn in race one of the 60 metres where he stormed to victory running a new PB 7.64s which saw him cross the finish line eight hundredths of a second ahead of the second place finisher. The 150 metres saw another excellent performance from him taking the sprint double and running another new PB 17.82s, finishing 1.25 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
During 2016 sprinter David Morgan-Harrison has been making good and steady progress, he is a wholehearted athlete who never gives less than a 100% effort. He put in some great performances for the youth team in their National Youth Development league campaign and became an invaluable member of the under 17 squad. An abiding memory of this year was the under 20 relay team with David in their ranks setting a new Kingston record time at Doncaster.
David competed in the 60 metres and 150 metres races at Sheffield. The 60 metres saw him running in a senior’s event which contained under 20’s and under17’s as well as senior athletes. He took 4th place in the race and ran a new PB of 7.82s, taking almost half a second off his previous best time. In the 150 metres he competed in a field under 20’s and under 17’s where he picked up another 4th place finish and ran another new PB of 18.57s, which was the first time he had gone under 20 seconds for the 150 and took 1.61 seconds off his previous best mark.
Representing the field athletes at the EIS was 14 year old Indigo Atkin who was making her indoor debut at this competition. 2016 was Indigo’s first full season with Kingston and she enjoyed a good and rewarding track & field season, winning gold medals in the shot at both the County and County Schools championships and gaining County selection for both of the Inter County Championships meetings.
The only throwing event that is held indoors in this country is the shot putt and there was a field of 19 athletes competing in this event. Indigo’s best throw of the day was one of 9.61m which saw her finish in 3rd place.
