2017 Northern Indoor Championships

Under 13’s & under 15’s

EIS Stadium, Sheffield – Sunday 5^th February 2017

Eleven of Kingston’s junior athletes travelled to the English Institute of Sports stadium in Sheffield to compete at the 2017 Northern Athletics under 13’s and under 15’s indoor championship meeting.

 Under 15’s

14 year old Brody Hinson joined sprint coach Paul Curtis’s training group in June of 2015 and had his first full competitive year in 2016 where he won the sprint double at both the County and the County schools championship meetings and also earned County representation at both of last year’s Inter Counties meetings. He was making his major championship debut at this event and he began his campaign in the heat’s of the under 15 boys 60 metres sprints where he was drawn in heat 4 which saw him finish in 3^rd place and his run of 7.67 sec just three hundredths of a second outside his season’s best time saw him qualify for the semi finals where he was in action in the second of the semi’s where he was placed 4^th but his run of 7.76 sec wasn’t enough to get him into the final. Also running in the heat’s of the 60’s was multi-eventer Connor Pickering who was drawn in the first heat where his season’s best run of 9.33 sec was not enough for him to progress to the semi finals.

Later in the day Brody Hinson was back on the track this time in his stronger event in the 200 metres competition. He was drawn in the 2^nd heat where he cruised to victory running a time of 24.33 sec to progress to the semi finals where he ran in the third of the races and collected another victory posting a new PB of 23.69 sec clipping four hundredths of a second from his old PB which he had set the previous weekend at the Sheffield Festival of Athletics meeting. The 200 metres final saw Brody smash his PB once more taking another tenth of a second off his time and running 23.59 sec to take the silver medal which was his first major championship medal.

The shot competition brought Connor Pickering into further action and entering the fray with him was another Kingston athlete Antony Mould. Both boys were making their major championships debut appearance and they both threw new PB’s in the shot final with Connor launching an effort of 7.73 metres for 5^th place and Antony throwing 7.13 metres to take 6^th place. Connor also competed in the long jump final but he was unable to find his best form and his best jump of the day was a season’s best effort of 4.04 metres.

13 year old Holly Adams has just moved up to the under 15’s age category she joined our junior group in late 2014 and made her competitive debut in 2015 where she competed in sprints, jumps, hurdles and throws and as that year progressed it became clear that she had a real affinity for the throwing events and she was taken under the wing of throws coach Dave Bennett. 2016 saw Holly make her major championship debut at Februarys Northern Indoor meeting where she won the gold medal in the shot, a second shot gold was secured at Mays County championships and in July she won the discus competition at the English Schools cup final and August brought two more silvers at the Northern track & field championships. The 2017 Northern indoor championship event saw her throw a new PB of 10.13 metres in the shot final to collect the silver medal her first medal of this year.

2016 was 14 Year Old Indigo Atkin’s first full competitive season she is a thrower who competes for Kingston in all four throwing events hammer, shot, discus and javelin and trains with both Dave Smith and Dave Bennett. Last year’s County championship meeting saw Indigo win the hammer gold medal and silver with the shot and at the County Schools event she took hammer gold and shot silver as well as winning County honours. Her first outing of 2017 was at this event in Sheffield which also marked her major championship debut appearance. Like her club mate she also appeared in the shot final and she too threw a new PB of 10.09 metres to win the bronze medal and capture her first major championship medal.

Alanah Thoresby made her club debut in the autumn of 2013 and for the last three years she has been a member of the Kingston junior team representing the club in the UK Youth Development league and has also won County honours she was in action at these championships on both track and the fields. She was drawn in heat 8 of the ten 60 metre sprint races where a new personal best time of 8.78 sec which  took three quarters of a second off her old best saw her take 2^nd place in the race and safely progress to the semi finals. She went in the second of the semi final races where she put in another excellent run clipping another 4 hundredths off her best time setting a new PB of 8.74 sec but missed out on a place in the final. In the high jump competition she was one of seven girls who were battling for the bronze medal all of whom cleared a height of 1.45 metres with the medal going to Honey-Mae Slide of Sheffield and Dearne. There were 44 athletes in the long jump final which had to be split into two pools with Alanah competing in Pool A. where her best effort of the day was one of 4.29 metres which saw her finish 23^rd.

Evie Watson debuted for Kingston in 2014 and she is another key member of the junior team she has also won representative honours for the County and was the 200 metres bronze medallist at last year’s County championship meeting. Evie was in action in the 60 metre sprint races she was drawn to run in the fourth heat where she put in a big effort shaving 2 hundredths of a second off her best time to take 4^th place and set herself a new PB of 8.80 sec which saw her just miss the cut for the semi finals. She was also in competition in Pool A of the long jump final where she put in a season’s best jump of 4.58 metres to take 12^th place.

Emily Dye like her training partners Alanah and Evie is a County representative and another prominent member of the junior team. She made her club debut in 2013 and the 2016 track and field season saw her pick up two silver medals in hurdles and long jump at the County championships together with a hurdles silver medal and long jump bronze at the County Schools championship meeting. Emily was in action in Pool A of the long jump final where her best jump of the day of 4.38 metres saw her finish in 19^th.

Under 13’s

Alex Grant made his major championship debut at the 2016 Northern indoor event where he competed in the 60 metres sprints and long jump. He was the bronze medallist at last year’s County championships in both the long jump and 75 metres hurdles events. Alex was a member of the Kingston Junior team and competed for them in high jump, long jump and 100 metre sprints in their campaign in the UK Youth Development league matches. The first event up for him at this year’s Northern indoors was the 60 metres sprints where was drawn in the third of the heats, he ran a new PB of 9.45 sec for 5^th place in his race but it was not sufficient for him to progress further. He returned to action in the long jump competition where he produced a season’s best effort of 3.95 metres in the final for 8^th place.

10 year old Emma Hoggard joined our junior groups in April of 2016 and just a few weeks later she won her first medals two silver ones in both the 80 and 150 metre sprints at the County championships in January this year she was a 5^th place finisher at the County cross country championships. She made her major championship debut at this meeting running in the 60 metre and 200 metre sprints as well as the 800 metres. First up was the 60 metres running in heat 2 where she ran a new PB of 9.74 sec for 6^th place, the next event was in heat 4 of the 200 metres which saw another new PB of 32.08s for 5^th and then went straight from the 200 finish to the start line for the 800 metres where she finished 5^th with a new PB of 2:56.99 sec.

11 year old Lucy Parker joined our junior system on the same April evening last year as Emma Hoggard. She competed for the Kingston junior team in the UK Youth Development league fixtures where she represented the Club in the sprints as well as the high jump and long jump events and also performed in the Humber track & field league meetings and at Open meetings. Her final event of 2016 was at the Cleethorpes beach terrain race. Lucy made her major championship debut at Sheffield and her day began in heat 4 of the 60 metre sprints where she ran a new PB of 9.18 sec for a 4^th place finish.  The 200 metres competition saw her produce her second new PB of the day running in heat 2 she clocked a time of 30.37 sec for 4^th place and a season’s best effort of 3.85 metres in the long jump gave her a 7^th place finish.
