Humber Track & Field League – Meeting 1
King George V Stadium, Grimsby
Saturday 1st April 2017
The opening Humber track & field league fixture of the 2017 season was staged at the King George V Stadium in Grimsby on Saturday the 1st of April. There was a good turnout of athletes from the clubs on both banks of the Humber as well as a good number who had travelled from further afield.
Athletes aged from 8 to 14 years competed in a Quadrathlon event where each of them had to compete in a run, a throw and a jump plus one more event of their own choosing whilst older competitors preparing for the start of the new season were also in action in their own individual events.
There were encouraging displays by many of the clubs junior athletes in the Quadrathlon events the highlights of which were Alanah Thoresby’s victory in the under 15 girl’s and two runner up spots for Toby Greensmith in the under 13 boy’s and 8 year old Tilly Shaw-Hall in the under 9 girls and a bronze medal for Harvey Southcoat in the under 15 boy’s event.

Quadrathlon Competitions
Under 9 Girls
Following her exploits at the recent ‘Tom Pinks’ event in Sheffield Tilly Shaw-Hall made her second competitive appearance in the Kingston vest at Grimsby where she took on her first quadrathlon event she was one of 8 contestants and was inaction in the 60 metres sprint, the 600 metres race, the standing long jump and the rounder’s ball throw.
The 60 metres sprint saw her record a time of 13.1 sec which earned her 10 points she ran the 600 metres race in 2:48.1 sec which added another 37 points to her total, the standing long jump earned her another 17 with a jump of 1.22 metres and another 6 points came from her throw of 7.80 metres with the rounder’s ball gave her a total of 70 points and a silver medal.
Under 13 girls
Jessica Waugh was the highest placed Kingston athlete in the under 13 girl’s competition finishing in 4th place in the field of 26 and setting new personal best performances in all four of her events.
She ran a time of 14.9 sec in the 70 metres hurdles for a haul of 59 points and her run of 13.2 sec in the 80 metres brought her another 36, she picked up 56 points in the high jump clearing a height of 1.20 metres and another 40 with her throw of 4.91 metres in the shot to give her a points total of 191.
Beth Moodie was placed 14th and she too set new personal best performances in all four of her events running the 80 metres sprint in a time of 13.1 sec, she put in a jump of 3.12 metres in the long jump and a throw of 4.48 metres in the shot and launched the javelin out to a distance of 12.42 metres which gave her a points total of 126.
Izzy Watts was making her second appearance in a Kingston vest and she claimed 15th place and also achieved new PB’s in all four of her events. She recorded a time of 14.0 sec in the 80 metres and cleared a height of 1.05 metres in the high jump which together with throws of 4.00 metres in the shot and 7.08 metres in the javelin gave her a points total of 105.
This was Lydia Moore’s second competitive outing in the blue and gold of Kingston and she finished in 18th place beginning with a run of 14.5 sec in the 80 metres and she then recorded new PB’s in her three further events, jumping 3.12 metres in the long jump pulling out a putt of 3.89 metres in the shot and throwing 5.00 metres with the javelin for a points total of 63.
Emma Hoggard competed in only one event so did not receive a placing in the competition where she ran the 600 metres race in a time of 2:07.6 sec
Under 15 Girls
Competing in a field of 27 athletes Alanah Thoresby was the gold medallist in the under 15 girl’s event where her chosen disciplines were the 800 metres race, the long jump, high jump and shot.
The 800 metres saw her running a time of 2:53.2 sec which gave her a haul of 63 points and her effort of 4.34 metres in the long jump gained her a further 74 points, a new Personal best performance in the high jump where she cleared a height of 1.51 metres brought her a further 81 and another new PB of 6.44 metres in the shot added a further 55 points to her tally which made a grand total of 273 points which saw her finish 15 points ahead of the silver medallist Millie Weaver of Scunthorpe AC.
Ella Shaw-Hall finished in 5th place with a total of 195 points over her four events and she set new personal best performances in three of them. She began with a new PB of 15.9 sec in the 100 metres sprint and the 800 metres saw her notch up a good time of 2:53.6 sec just over a second outside of her best time the long jump brought a new PB of 3.47 metres two centimetres above her previous best and her third new PB came in the shot where registered a throw of 4.69 metres.
Emilia Russell had the 7th highest points total but was unplaced because she only competed in three events and she set new personal bests in all three. The 100 metres saw her clip a tenth of a second off her old best and run a new PB of 15.8 sec and she jumped a new PB of 3.49 metres in the long jump 2 centimetres beyond her old mark and another PB was achieved with her throw of 6.20 metres in the shot to give her a total of 150 points.
Emily Dye had the 9th highest points total but she also was unplaced as she only competed in two events. She was in action in the 100 metres where she ran a time of 14.6 sec for a points score of 61 and a leap of 4.20 metres in the long jump earned her another 71 to finish on a total of 134 points.
Eve Anderson completed 3 events setting new PB’s of 16.5 sec in the 100 metres and a new mark of 4.43 metres in the shot whilst also putting in a jump of 3.42 metres in the long jump competition to finish on a total of 123 points.
Ellie Townsend competed in two events and set new PB’s in both of them in the high jump she cleared a height of 1.48 metres which was 8 centimetres beyond her previous best and a new best of 12.16 metres in the discus throw was 68 centimetres beyond her previous best performance. Her points total was 113.
Twin sister Jess Townsend also got in on the act setting a new PB in the discus of 21.80 metres which took her 1.11 metres past her previous best mark and gave her a total of 72 points.
Evie Watson was in action in the 100 metres sprint and she made her debut in the triple jump her first competitive outing in the event. She ran a time of 14.3 sec in the 100 metres and her effort of 9.13 metres in the triple jump has set her a mark to beat.
Under 13 Boy’s
Toby Greensmith was the silver medallist in the under 13 boy’s quadrathlon in a field of sixteen athletes he competed in the 80 metres sprint, the 600 metres race, the high jump and the javelin throw and set new personal bests in all of them. .
The 80 metres saw him running a time of 12.7 sec and in the 600 metres race he covered the distance in 1:50.3 sec he went clear at a height of 1.30 metres in the high jump and launched out the javelin to a distance of 13.80 metres for a total points score of 198.
Finlay Southcoat’s selected events were the 80 metres sprint, long jump, shot and javelin. The 80 metres saw him record a time of 12.7 sec and his best leap in the long jump was one of 3.77 metres he set a new PB of 4.56 metres in the shot and followed that up with another new PB in the javelin with a throw of 11.52 metres to finish in 10th place with a points total of 153.
Alex Chivers competed in two events and he recorded new PB’s in both, the shot competition saw him throw a distance of 6.30 metres and his throw of 22.20 metres with the javelin took him 51 centimetres beyond his old best mark.
Under 15 Boys
Harvey Southcoat’s chosen events were the 100 metres sprint, the 800 metres race, Long jump and shot.
His run of 14.6 sec in the 100 metres won him 61 points and he collected a further 67 in the 800 metres where he covered the two lap race in a time of 2:44.3 sec a big new PB came in the long jump where his effort of 3.80 metres bettered his old best by 58 centimetres a second new PB was gained when in his first competition with the 4 kilogram shot he put in a throw of 4.42 metres.
Under 17 Women
Abbie Haigh has moved up to the under 17 age category for the 2017 track & field season she is a good all round athlete and has been both a reliable and committed performer for the clubs junior team for the last four seasons with her 5th season fast approaching. During 2016 she began training with hurdles coach Steve Robinson she had flirted with the hurdles before but this time it was serious. She has been steadily improving in training sessions and she had her first competitive run out of 2017 at the Grimsby meeting over higher hurdles and a longer distance up from 75 metres to 80 metres. She was the winner of women’s 80 metres hurdles race and she also ran a new PB of 14.7 sec.
Under 20 Women
The County and County Schools discus champion Sophie O’Hara got her 2017 campaign up and running with her first competitive appearance of 2017 and she made the perfect start to the new season with a new personal best of 36.48 metres in the Grimsby throwing circle which was 42 centimetres beyond her previous best. Her first target for this year is to get the qualification standard to earn selection for the County team to go to English Schools Championships.
Under 20 Men
Jacob Chastney moved to Kingston from the Beverley club in July of 2016 and made his club debut at last Novembers indoor open meeting in Sheffield and made two further journeys over to the West Riding where he ran in the Northern Indoor Championships and at the Sheffield festival indoor meeting at the first event he ran in a 1000 metre race and the next two over the 800 metres distance. He had his first run outdoors at this track league meeting where he was in competition in the 400 metres race which saw him running a new PB of 57.1 sec to take a 3rd place finish.
