2017 County Track & Field Championship Meeting

Costello Stadium, Hull – Saturday 13^th May 2017

The 2017 County Championships were held at the Costello Stadium in Hull on Saturday the 13^th of May where the conditions were far from perfect with overcast skies periods of rain and a cold gusting wind which made things very difficult both on the track and the field not only for the athletes but for the officials as well.

Despite the conditions four Kingston athletes set new championship best performances with Jack Brothwell taking a massive 14.81 seconds off his previous best in the under 20’s 1500 metres final to set a new PB and a new championship best of 4:02.23 sec whilst Ben Copley set two new championship bests in both the under 15’s discus and shot competitions the discus saw him throw 44.07 metres and the shot 11.91 metres. In the under 17’s Libby Wheeler also set two new championship best performances firstly in the long jump where she posted a new PB of 5.48 metres 14 centimetres beyond her old mark and secondly in the triple jump where she set the new championship standard of 11.33 metres and Adam Coles who was running into a head wind was the winner of the under 17’s 100 metre hurdles with his new championship best time of 14.47 sec.

Details of the performances of all the Kingston athletes at the championships are as follows:

UNDER 11’s

Noah Sibary made his County Championship debut at this meeting where he was in competition in the 80 metres and 150 metres sprints and in the 600 metres race. He was the gold medallist in all three races winning the 80 metres in a time of 12.57 sec and he clipped .15 sec off his best time in the 150 running a new PB of 23.25 sec and added the 600 metres title with his run of 1:55.21 sec.

In the girls competition Freya Vidal was in action in the 80 and 150 metres sprints she is in her third competitive season with the club and made her debut at the 2016 championships where she had run in the 80 metres finishing 5^th in the final she has improved a lot since then she is stronger and faster and wanted to improve on last year’s performance and that is exactly what she did taking the gold medal in the 80metres where she ran a time of 12.35 sec and then took her second championship title and gold in the 150 metres posting a time of 23.60 sec.

UNDER 13’s

This is Alex Grant’s 5^th competitive season with Kingston and he made his debut at this event back in 2013 where he ran in the heats of the 80 metres he competed this year in the 100 metres sprints the 75 metres hurdles and the long jump. The 75 metres hurdles final saw him win his first County title and also set a new PB of 15.93 sec shaving 0.37 seconds off his previous best he won another gold medal in the 100 metres final where he ran a season’s best time of 15.47 sec and collected his third medal of the day this time a silver with his leap of 3.82 metres in the long jump.

2017 is Finlay Southcoat’s second track & field season with the club and he made his County Championship debut at the 2016 event at this year’s meeting he competed in both the 100 and 200 metre sprint finals and in the long jump competition. The 100 metres saw him take the silver medal in a time of 15.61 sec and he was the bronze medallist in the 200 metres where he ran a new PB of 31.22 sec and he collected another bronze in the long jump with his leap of 3.79 metres.

Sam Marsh joined our junior middle distance group in July 2015 and he has represented the club in league matches and open competitions and he was making his County Championship debut at this year’s event where he was in action in the finals of both the 100 and 200 metre sprint races collecting a silver in the 100 where he clocked a time of 15.61 sec and taking 5^th place in the 200 with a new PB of 31.31 sec.

Alex Chivers has been training with Kingston since 2014 and he debuted at these championships the following year where he ran in the 600 metres final his main focus now is on the throwing events and he competed this year in the shot putt final where his throw of 6.40 metres earned him the gold medal and the County title.

This season has seen Tilly Cairns make the move up from the under 11’s to the under13 age category, on her debut appearance at the 2015 championships she won the 80 metres and 150 metres sprint titles and was the silver medallist in the 600 metres. This year Tilly was in action in the 100 metres where she ran a new PB of 15.14 sec in the final clipping 0.19 seconds off her old best to take the silver medal.

Another girl stepping up to the under 13’s was Emma Hoggard who had won silver medals at 80 metres and 150 metres on her debut in 2015. This year she opted to run in the 1500 metres and this was her first race over that distance and she ran a PB of 5:47.57 sec for a5th place finish in the final.

UNDER 15’s

Sprinter Brody Hinson started training with us in the summer of 2015 and made his County championship debut at the 2016 event where did the sprint double taking the gold medals in both the 100 and 200 metres sprint races. He has made significant progress over the last 12 months and is currently ranked the No 1 sprinter in Yorkshire over both 100 and 200 metres and No 9 UK over 200 metres. His objective at this meeting was to defend both of his County titles and he did that in impressive fashion firstly in the 100 metres final taking the gold medal with a run of 11.86 sec and in the 200 metres he ran a new PB of 23.45 sec taking 0.14 of a second off his previous best for his second gold.

Luke Carr took the silver medal behind Brody in the 100 metres where he ran a new PB of 13.63 sec shaving 0.07 of a second off his previous best time and was the bronze medallist in the 200 where he clipped 0.26 of a second off his best and established a new PB of 27.74 sec.  Jack Singleton took 4^th place in the 100 metres in 14.18 sec and was also 4^th in the 200 metres where he ran a new PB 28.53 sec taking 0.47 of a second off his old mark and Harvey Southcoat  was placed 5^th in the 100 metres in 14.25 sec and in the 200 he ran a new PB of 29.24 sec knocking 1.26 sec off his previous best for 5^th place.

Last year’s 200 metres champion Adam Fox turned his attention to the 300 metres this year and in the final he clipped 0.43 of a second off his best time to take the gold medal and establish a new PB of 43.17 sec. Harvey Southcoat was the silver medallist running a new PB of 45.01 sec taking 1.19 seconds off his previous best time.

In the 1500 metres final Harvey Roberts took the silver medal and also knocked 16.42 sec off his old best running a new PB of 4:39.41 sec. Adam Fox took 5^th place in the race and he also ran a new PB of 4:51.46 sec taking 11.07 seconds off his old best and Tom Smales in 7^th took 0.24 of a second off his old time setting a new PB of 4:58.76 sec.

Thrower Ben Copley has made an outstanding start to the 2017 track & field season he stands at dizzying heights in the UK rankings where he is ranked at No. 2 in the discus, No. 3 in the javelin and at No. 4 in the shot. He won the County titles in all three disciplines and produced Championship best performance’s in the discus where he threw 44.07 metres and the shot with his throw of 11.91 metres. In the javelin he threw a new PB of 50.11 metres 66 centimetres beyond his old best.  Antony Mould was the bronze medallist in the discus with his throw of 23.47 metres and he took 4^th place in the shot with 7.44 metres and in the hammer Antony was the gold medallist with his throw of 28.33 metres.

In the girls competition Daisy Logan was the gold medallist in the 100 metres final where she ran a time of 13.76 sec, earlier she had set a new PB of 13.72 sec in the heats, the silver medal went to Jodie Martin with her run of 13.89 sec and she too had set a new PB of 13.88 in the heats and Evie Watson took 4^th place with her run 14.15 sec.

The 200 metres saw Jodie Martin winning the County title and running a new PB of 27.74 sec taking 0.59 of a second off her previous best which she had set in the heats and Alanah Thoresby was the silver medallist and she also ran a new PB of 28.11 sec clipping 0.48 of a second off her old time and the bronze medal went to Rowan Swinburn who took 0.66 of a second off her best time running a new PB of 28.27 sec.

Rowan Swinburn has moved up this year from the 70 metre to 75 metre hurdles and she had her first run over the higher hurdles in the 75 metres final where won the silver medal and set a PB of 13.39 sec and Emily Dye took 4^th place running a time of 14.46 sec.

Onto the field events where we saw Alanah Thoresby and Ellie Townsend in a closely fought high jump final where they could not be separated both of them cleared a height of 1.50 metres and were joint silver medallists and Jess Townsend was the silver medallist in the discus competition where she threw a distance of 21.66 metres. The long jump final saw four Kingston athletes in action where Alanah Thoresby’s new personal best jump of 4.66 metres left her an agonising one centimetre away from the gold and she had to settle for the silver medal the bronze medallist was Emily Dye just 2 centimetres behind Alanah with her jump of 4.64 metres and Evie Watson’s  jump of 4.50 metres saw her finish in 6^th place with Ella Shaw-Hall was 9^th with her jump of 3.82 metres.

In the javelin final Sophie Reed had her first competitive throw with the 500 gram javelin and her throw of 22.33 metres established a new PB and brought her a gold medal and the County title.  Indigo Atkin was the silver medallist in both the shot and hammer finals and she threw a distance of 9.54 metres with the shot and 31.23 metres with the hammer.

UNDER 17’s

In the men’s 100 metres final there were five Kingston athletes in the hunt for the medals  and we saw Jack Perry take the gold medal with his season’s best run of 11.73 sec and the silver went to David Morgan-Harrison with his run of 11.99 sec Adam Coles was the bronze medallist with his season’s best run of 12.13 sec and Nathan Cuthbert finished 4^th in 12.29 sec and Callum Wikinson  who was making his debut for Kingston took 6^th place in 12.58 sec.  The 200 metres final saw David Morgan-Harrison take the gold medal with his run of 24.34 sec and Nathan Cuthbert was the bronze medallist running a time of 25.03 sec.

In the 400 metres final Robert Tweedale made his debut as a Kingston athlete and he was defending the County title he won in 2016 when he was running for the Hull Achilles club he made a successful defence retaining his title and he ran a new PB of 51.70 sec taking 1.85 seconds off his old best time. Adam Coles was the gold medallist in the 100 metres hurdles final and despite the fact that he was running into a strong head wind his time for the race of 14.47 sec saw him establish a new Championship best performance for the event.

The long jump final saw last year’s gold and silver medallists Jack Perry and Adam Coles in direct competition again Jack pulled out a new PB of 6.33 metres which was 11 centimetres ahead of his previous best to retain his title whilst Adam put in a great effort and took the silver medal with his jump of 5.98 metres just two centimetres short of his PB.

Shaun Kerry was defending the three County titles he won at last year’s championships the hammer shot and javelin and in the case of the hammer and shot it was the English Schools champion ‘s second defence having won those in 2015. In the hammer he threw a new PB of 56.95 metres 15 centimetres past his old mark to win the gold although he was tested by his training partner Will Robinson who took the silver medal with his throw of 49.08 metres. The javelin event was also competitive with Nathan Cuthbert putting out a good throw of 36.92 metres to earn himself the silver medal with Shaun taking the gold with his throw of 40.59 metres and he retained his shot title with a throw of 12.12 metres.

In the women’s 100 metres final Hannah Kynman claimed the gold medal with her run of 12.69 sec with training partner Rose Hewitt who debuted at last year’s event taking the silver in a time of 13.67 sec the bronze medal went to Cosima Fawcett who put in a season’s best run of 13.71 sec and Kate Huntington finished in 4^th place where she ran a time of 14.40 sec. The 200 metres final saw Hannah Kynman complete the sprint double running a time of 26.39 sec and Rose Hewitt collect her second silver medal of the day with her run of 28.34 sec. In the 300 metres Becky Chivers run of 46.98 sec saw her clinch the silver medal and she was also in action in the 800 metres final where she ran a new PB of 2:36.50 sec shaving two hundredths of a second off her old time to win the bronze medal and Lucy Savery finished in 4^th place where she ran a time of 2:42.44 sec.

Three Kingston athletes contested the 80 metres hurdles final where Venus Morgan was the gold medallist winning her 5^th consecutive sprint hurdles title at these championships with her run of 12.80 sec with Paige Mathers taking the bronze in a time of 15.04 sec and Abbie Haigh taking 4^th place in 15.77 sec. Venus also competed in her first distance hurdles race at this meeting where she ran the 300 metres hurdles event setting herself a PB of 47.53 sec to win the gold medal with Lucy Savery taking the silver medal with her run of 52.73 sec. A third gold medal went to Venus Morgan in the shot event where she threw a new PB of 11.27 metres adding 4 centimetres to her old mark.

English School’s  triple jump bronze medallist and Northern indoor champion Libby Wheeler won both the long jump and triple jump competitions and set new Championship best performances in both of them. She won her third consecutive County long jump title setting a new PB of 5.48 metres 14 centimetres beyond her old mark and successfully defended her triple jump title with a jump of 11.33 metres. Kate Huntington was also in competition in the long jump where she finished in 4^th with her jump of 3.89 metres. In the javelin event Harriet Cannell made a successful defence of her title throwing a new PB of 37.95 metres extending her best mark by 92 centimetres and the Northern Champion Becky Chivers took the silver medal with her throw of 32.71 metres and Paige Mathers the bronze with her season’s best throw 29.74 metres.

UNDER 20’s

The men’s 100 and 200metres finals saw England International Andrew Morgan-Harrison defending the two sprint titles he won in 2016 with the fast improving Josh Sampson a real threat. There was a strong head wind for the 100 metres and it had an adverse affect on the times the athletes ran. Andrew won the 100 metres in a time of 11.21 sec and Josh took the silver medal in 11.72 sec. The 200 metres saw another successful defence by Andrew who ran the race 22.80 sec and a second silver medal went to Josh for his run of 23.68 sec.

The 800 metres race saw Jacob Chastney making his debut appearance at the County championships and he got off to a great start running a new PB of 2:06.29 sec taking 1.51 seconds off his old best to win the County title and the gold medal.

The 1500 metres brought training partners Jack Brothwell, Baldvin Magnusson and Tom Whitley onto the track where Jack ran a really strong race taking 14.81 seconds off his best time to win the race and set a new PB of 4:02.23 sec Baldvin took 2^nd place and he too ran a new PB of 4:06.13 sec taking 1.47 seconds off his old time and Tom was the bronze medallist with his season’s best run of 4:44.24 sec.

On the field Josh Tranmer won his fourth consecutive County discus title with his throw of 41.30 metres and was also involved in a very good shot competition with his old adversary Henry Fairclough and Josh had to settle for the silver medal with his throw of 13.71 metres.  In the high jump competition Freddie Capes took the silver medal with a season’s best clearance at a height of 1.60 metres.

In the women’s competition Charlotte Paterson was the winner of the 100 metres sprint where she ran a time of 12.34 sec and Amy Sampson took the silver medal with her run of 13.74 sec. The 200 metres saw the County title go to Jess Fields who ran the race in a time of 28.80 sec. In the 400 metres final Amelia Robinson was the silver medallist and she also ran a new PB of 58.11 sec taking nine hundredths of a second off her old time with Bryony Underwood taking the bronze in 65.6 sec.

In the field events England International Olivia Stevenson was the winner of the hammer competition with her throw of 53.67 metres and Sophie O’Hara won the discus competition throwing a distance of 34.94 metres and Sian Kerry was the silver medallist in the javelin where she launched a throw of 28.54 metres.

SENIORS

Luke Giblin continued his long run of successes at the County championships where for the 5^th time in his career he won the sprint double winning both 100 and 200 metres finals he ran a season’s best of 11.00 sec in the 100 and another season’s best run of 22.12 sec in the 200 saw him collect his second gold medal of the day.

Joe Cooper has just moved out of the under 20’s and is in his first season as an under 23 athlete he also ran in the two sprint finals and in both of the races he pressed Luke hard but was unable to get alongside him he was the silver medallist in both finals running season’s bests in both races 11.24 sec in the 100 and 22.71 sec in the 200.

 V35 athlete Lawrence Baird the former Great Britain international and World Masters 4x 400 World record holder ran in the 400 metre final where a season’s best performance of 50.54 sec saw him take the County title.

First year under 23 athlete and former 3000 metre champion Harry Powell was in competition in the 1500 metres race where he ran a new personal best time clipping 5.02 seconds off his old best to take the gold medal in a time of 4:00.22 sec.

V40 athlete Simon Downs took on the 5000 metre race in which he ran a new personal best time of 18:07.84 sec clipping 4.16 seconds off his old best to take the bronze medal. Simon also went on to take the gold medal in the javelin competition with his throw of 25.93 metres.

Last year’s 400 metre champion Dan Holiday was in action this year in the 400 metre hurdles an event where he was the County champion in 2012 and 2014. He put in a season’s best performance of 59.13 sec which won him yet another County title.

Tom Horner made his first appearance of 2017 in the high jump competition where he was the gold medallist and went clear at a season’s best height of 1.80 metres.

The long jump final saw training partners and team mates Matt Elvidge and James Wardle once again battling for supremacy in the sand pit James put in a season’s best jump of 5.72 metres but had to settle for silver as Matt took the title and gold medal with his best effort of the day a jump of 5.88 metres.

The shot competition saw the return of former County shot and discus champion Anthony Norfolk to the championship event after a hiatus of four years he showed that he still had the killer instinct taking the gold medal with a season’s best throw of 13.12 metres. V45 athlete and the 2016 British Masters throws pentathlon bronze medallist John Twiddle was the silver medallist in the shot with his throw of 11.82 metres and he went on to take the gold medal in the discus event where he threw a distance of 33.64 metres.

The hammer competition saw four ‘Hull Hammer Squad’ members Alex and Pete Smith together with James Bedford and John Twiddle in an ultra competitive final between athletes who had tasted success at the highest level an Olympic finalist Commonwealth silver medallist two Commonwealth Youth champions a two time English Schools champion UK champion England champion and plenty more.

James Bedford was the winner of the County title with a throw of 63.98 metres with the silver medal going to Pete Smith with a throw of 61.17 metres and the bronze medal went to Alex Smith who in his first competitive outing of this year threw a season’s best of 58.14 metres with John Twiddle taking 5^th place with 39.33 metres.
