UK Youth Development League Match 2

North East Premier Division

Darlington – Sunday 28^th May 2017

The youth team’s second league match of the 2017 track & field season brought a journey up to Darlington for a severely weakened team. The fixture clashed with the Radio One festival at Burton Constable and a large number of the clubs athletes attended the festivities there, leaving a team of just 17 athletes to take on immensely strong opponents from Scotland and the north east of England.

Our opposing teams comprised of two Scottish composites in Team Edinburgh and Kingdom Athletics along with Gateshead Harriers and Middlesbrough Mandale from the north east and the City of York club.

The young Kingston stars competed on level terms with all of the teams on quality but were hopelessly outnumbered by the sheer quantity of athletes especially from the two Scottish teams.

There were some excellent performances from the Kingston athletes and details of all their efforts are as follows.

Under 20’s

The County 100 and200 metre silver medallist Josh Sampson was our sole under 20 male sprinter and he ran in the ‘A’ races in both of the sprints taking 4^th place in the 100 metres in a time of 11.4 sec and 5^th place in the 200 in 23.1 sec.

He was also in action in the high jump event where he was placed 5^th and cleared a height of 1.60 metres.

Sister Amy Sampson was the ‘A’ runner in both of the sprint races taking 5^th place in the 100 where she posted a time of 13.7 sec and her run of 27.0 sec in the 200 gave her a 6^th place finish.

Training partner Jess Fields took 5^th place in the 100 ‘B’ race where she ran a time of 13.5 sec and her run of 27.6 sec in the 200 saw her take a 4^th place finish.

The under 20 men’s 800 metres featured Kyle Foster in the ‘A’ where he ran an excellent race for 2^nd place and he clipped 2.45 sec off his previous best time setting himself a new PB of 2:01.90 sec and in the ‘B’ Tom Whitley ran a new PB of 2:18.3 sec to take 3^rd place knocking 10.7 seconds off his previous best.

The women’s hammer competition saw the reigning England under 17 champion Olivia Stevenson and England under 18 champion Alice Barnsdale in the blue and gold vests of Kingston the two girls dominated the event with Olivia winning the ‘A’ with a throw of 54.09 metres and Alice winning the ‘B’ with 52.74 metres.

The two girls were in tandem again in both the shot and discus competitions which saw Olivia take 3^rd place in the shot ‘A’ where she threw 9.16 metres and Alice also taking 3^rd in the ‘B’ with 8.38 metres.

Olivia claimed another 3^rd place in the discus ‘A’ with a throw of 32.39 metres and Alice was the winner of ‘B’ where she threw 29.11 metres.

The women’s javelin saw Sian Kerry enter the action in the ‘A’ competition where her throw of 26.76 metres saw her take a 5^th place finish

Under 17’s

The County 100 metres and long jump champion Jack Perry was the ‘A’ runner in the 100 metres where his run of 12.0 sec saw him take a 4^th place finish Nathan Cuthbert ran in the ‘B’ where he also took place 4^th place and he clipped .19 of a second off his previous best time running a new PB of 12.1 sec.

The 200 metres saw Nathan Cuthbert running the ‘A’ race where he finished in 5^th place posting a time of 24.2 sec and in the ‘B’ Joe Seed ran a PB of 24.6 sec for a 4^th place finish.

The women’s 100 metres saw Jennifer Hopkinson making a most welcome return to the team for her first competitive action since the summer of 2015 she ran in the ‘A’ race where she was placed 6^th in a time of 13.9 sec with Rose Hewitt running the ‘B’ where she took 2^nd place with her run of 13.4 sec which was a PB.

The 200 metres saw Venus Morgan running the ‘A’ where she took 2^nd place and posted a time of 26.1 sec and Jennifer Hopkinson was placed 5^th in the ‘B’ where she ran a time of 28.7 sec.

The 300 metres race brought Abbie Haigh to the track in the ‘A’ and she ran a time of 47.8 sec for a 6^th place finish

Joe Seed was back in action in the 400 metres ‘A’ race where he took 2^nd place and ran a time of 54.3 sec.

The 800 metres saw Becky Chivers running the race in a time of 2:37.1 sec  for a 5^th place finish.

The women’s 80 metre hurdles saw Venus Morgan winning the ‘A’ race running a time of 11.7 sec and Becky Chivers taking 2^nd place in the ‘B’ clipping 6 tenths of a second off her old time to set a new PB of 13.3 sec.

Jack Perry was in competition on the field in the long jump pit where the former English Schools champion took 2^nd place with his jump of 6.02 metres.

In the women’s long jump Venus Morgan was the winner of the ‘A’ Jumping a new PB of 5.33 metres a one centimetre increase whilst Rose Hewitt took 3^rd place in the ‘B’ and added 6 centimetres to her best setting a new PB of 4.27 metres.

Abbie Haigh and Rose Hewitt were in further action in the triple jump event where Abbie jumped a new PB of 9.19 metres a 18 centimetres increase to take 4^th place in the ‘A’ and Rose who was in her first triple jump competition finished 2^nd in the ‘B’ and set a PB of 8.88 metres.

Abbie Haigh saw further competition in the high jump where she took 4^th place in the ‘A’ clearing a height of 1.35 metres.

Reigning English Schools champion Shaun Kerry dominated the hammer competition taking victory with a new personal best throw of 57.29 metres a distance of 34 centimetres past his old best mark.

It was the same story in the shot putt with Shaun in total control and winning the ‘A’ with his throw of 12.05 metres.

The javelin competition saw Shaun Kerry throw a new PB of 42.10 metres 5 centimetres past his previous best in the ‘A’ to take 2^nd place whilst in the ‘B’ Nathan Cuthbert put a massive 4.52 metres on his old best to win the ‘B’ and set a new PB of 41.44 metres.

The Northern javelin champion Becky Chivers was the winner of the ‘A’ competition launching the javelin out to a distance of 34.73 metres to set a new PB adding 16 centimetres to her previous best.

The women’s shot saw Jennifer Hopkinson out on the field and her new PB of 6.83 metres gave her a 6^th place finish in the ‘A’.

Relays

Because of the shortage of athletes the Kingston club could only compete in 3 of the 8 relay races and managed to put out 4 x 100 teams at under 20 women, under 17 women and under 17 men.

Under 17 Women – 4 x 100 metres

The team featuring Jennifer Hopkinson, Abbie Haigh, Rose Hewitt and  Venus Morgan finished in 4^th place and ran a time of 53.7 sec.

Under 17 Men – 4 x 100 metres

The Kingston foursome were Nathan Cuthbert, Shaun Kerry, Joe Seed and Jack Perry and they were the 3^rd place finishers running a time of 46.7 sec.

Under 20 Women – 4 x 100 metres

The under 20 women’s team were Jess Fields, Sian Kerry, Olivia Stevenson and (under 17) Becky Chivers  and the girls took 5^th place in the race with their run of 57.3 sec.
