 Sheffield Evening Open Meeting

 EIS Stadium Sheffield

Wednesday 24th January 2018

A successful indoor season continued when 3 Kingston upon Hull athletes travelled to the English Institute of Sport for the latest in the Sheffield Evening Open series.

North of England bronze medallist Sam Croney started proceedings in the 60m hurdles, where he was aiming to reduce his personal best by 0.05 sec in order to qualify for next month’s England Athletics Championships. The 15 year old Wolfreton School pupil produced an outstanding performance, leaving nothing to chance with a time of 8.86 sec, 0.19 sec inside his previous best to set up a return to the South Yorkshire venue next month to take on Britain’s best. For good measure Sam also clocked a new personal best of 7.76 sec in the 60m when taking the opportunity to work on his flat speed – an essential part of his development as a sprint hurdler.

Training partner & fellow Wolfreton School pupil Daisy Logan also showed that her hard work during the winter is beginning to pay off. The talented all-rounder only made her debut last April but in her first season collected a county title over 100m as well as reaching the 200m final in the Northern Championships. She also shows great promise as a combined eventer. Daisy targeted both sprint events in Sheffield, competing in the under 15 60m & 200m. She was a clear winner of both with a lifetime best of 8.20 sec in the 60m & an indoor best of 26.79 sec over the one lap race. Both of these times are also national championship entry standards, although prior to this Daisy is looking forward to the Northern Championships in 10 days’ time.

Emily Dye made a good start to her 2 years in the under17 age group last month when recording an indoor best of 4.71m when finishing 13th in the North of England Championships.  She went well beyond this distance clearing 4.89m for 2nd place in her category, only 2cm short of her best outdoor performance, despite having missed several weeks of training before Christmas due to an ankle injury. With this now behind her Emily will be aiming for the 5 metre barrier in the forthcoming outdoor season.
