Pontefract Indoor Open Meeting

Thornes Park Wakefield – Sunday 18th March 2018

Two of Kingston’s promising under 13 girls Izzy Watts and Lydia Moore travelled to a snowy and bitterly cold Thornes Park in Wakefield, to compete in Pontefract AC’s indoor open meeting. The girls are friends and training partners and are both learning their trade under the supervision of multi events coach Len Kerridge. The girls were in action in the 50 metre sprints, long jump and shot putt.

There were two rounds of races in the 50 metre sprints and athletes were able to run in both rounds. This was the first time that either of the girls had competed over the distance. In round one Lydia Moore was drawn to run in the opening race where she took 4th place and established a PB of 8.6 sec. Izzy Watts was drawn in race 2 and she established a PB of 8.7 sec and was the 3rd place finisher. The second round of races saw Lydia drawn in race 3 where she ran a new PB of 8.5 sec, clipping a tenth of a second off her earlier run to take a 3rd place finish. Izzy went in the fourth race where she too took 3rd place and equalled the PB of 8.7 sec that she set in round 1.

The girls went head to head in both the long jump and shot competitions with Lydia taking the bragging rights in the long jump where she leapt to a new PB of 3.81 metres twenty eight centimetres beyond her previous best to take 3rd place. Izzy also jumped a new PB of 3.09.metres adding two centimetres to her old mark for a 12th place finish.

Izzy was the winner of the shot competition where she threw a new PB of 7.21 metres, an increase of 11 centimetres on her throw at February’s Northern championships. Lydia took 2nd place in the competition with her throw of 6.46 metres.
