North of England Division 2EC – Match 1
Moorway’s Stadium, Derby – Sunday 5th May 2018
The Kingston senior team’s opening league match of the 2018 track & field season took place at the Moorways stadium in Derby, the home track of Derby athletic club. The division comprises six teams and in addition to Kingston and Derby, the other four clubs in the competition are Rotherham Harriers, Hallamshire Harriers, Chesterfield AC and Lincoln Wellington. The match took place on the Bank Holiday weekend and there was also a clash with the British Universities Championships. There were a lot of gaps on the team sheet which meant the seniors and youth team athletes having to take on more events, and three 15 year olds made their senior team debuts at this match. It was a glorious day, dry hot and sunny perfect weather for the athletes.
The Kingston team put in a magnificent performance and got their league campaign off to a winning start. As always there was a great team bond and every athlete supported and encouraged every member of the team. The three debutants Harry Hudson, Emily Dye and Rosie Shepherd put in big performances and can be immensely proud of their efforts.
The match result saw Kingston take 1st place with 6 league points and 356 match points, Derby were 2nd with 5 and 347, Rotherham 3rd with 4 and 307, Hallamshire 4th on 3 and 280, Chesterfield 5th with 2 and 265 and Lincoln 6th on 1 and 242. The second match will take place at Woodbourne Road, Sheffield on Sunday the 3rd of June.
Details of all the athlete’s performances on the day are as follows.
The men’s 100 metres sprints saw Joe Cooper take 3rd place in the ‘A’ race running a time of 11.48 sec. Adam Coles was the 2nd place finisher in the ‘B’ where he ran a new PB of 11.71 sec, shaving 3 hundredths of a second off his old time. In the women’s events the clubs leading female sprinter Megan Hoult was the winner of the ‘A’ race running a time of 12.30 sec, and Amy Sampson took 5th place in the ‘B’ with her season’s best run of 13.90 sec. In the men’s 200 metres Joe Cooper took 4th place in the ‘A’ clocking a time of 23.12 sec, and in the ‘B’ Adam Coles ran his second new PB of the day clipping 0.19 of a second off his old time to take 2nd place and post a new PB of 23.85 sec. The women’s 200 metres saw Megan Hoult run a season’s best time of 25.64 sec in the ‘A’ to take 2nd place in the race, whilst heptathlete Venus Morgan was the winner of the ‘B’ with her season’s best run of 26.21 sec. Lawrence Baird took a 2nd place finish in the men’s 400 metres ‘A’ running a season’s best time of 51.25 sec, and Kyle Foster took 5th place in the 400 ‘B’ with his season’s best run 53.37 sec.
Kyle Foster ran another season’s best time in of 2:04.14 sec in the men’s 800 metres ‘A’ where he took 5th place and Daniel Holiday took 4th place in the ‘B’ with a season’s best run of 2:33.1 sec. In the women’s 800 metres Jess Cappleman took 5th place in the ‘A’ race where she ran a new PB of 2:25.04 sec an improvement of 2 tenths of a second. The men’s 1500 metres ‘A’ saw Harry Hudson make his senior debut, he ran a great competitive race and took on his senior opponents to take 4th place running a big new PB of 4:21.26 sec an improvement of 11.84 seconds. His coach the vastly experienced Gregan Clarkson was the winner of the ‘B’ running a season’s best time of 4:31.26 sec.
The women’s 100 metre hurdles saw Sonia Santos take 2nd place in the ‘A’ with her season’s best run of 16.70 sec and Venus Morgan was the winner of the ‘B’ where she ran a new PB of 15.10 sec an improvement of 1.38 seconds. Simon Downs took 3rd place in the men’s 110 metre hurdles ‘A’ running a new PB of 23.07 sec an improvement of 1.26 sec. Daniel Holiday was the winner of the men’s 400 metre hurdles ‘A’ where he ran a season’s best time of 57.57 sec and Gregan Clarkson took 2nd place in the ‘B’ with his run of 91.09 sec. The men’s 3000 metres steeplechase saw Gregan Clarkson take 2nd place in the ‘A’ with his season’s best run of 11:01.81 sec, and Simon Downs also took a 2nd place finish in the ‘B’ with his season’s best run of 11:53.37 sec. The pair were back in tandem again in the 5000 metres, where Gregan was 3rd in the ‘A’ with his run of run of 17:35.28 sec. Simon took 3rd place in the ‘B’ with his season’s best run of 19:25.77 sec.
Philip May and Adam Coles were in action in the men’s high jump, where Philip took 2nd place in the ‘A’ going clear at his personal best height of 1.55 metres and Adam, in his first high jump competition for 3 years took 2nd place in the ‘B’ going clear at a season’s best height of 1.50 metres. 15 year old Rosie Shepherd made her senior debut in the women’s high jump ‘A’ where she cleared a season’s best height of 1.45 metres to take 4th place. Adam Coles was the winner of the long jump ‘A’ where he put in a new personal best leap of 6.24 metres, an improvement of 13 centimetres. James Wardle was the winner of the ‘B’ with his season’s best jump of 5.84 metres. The women’s long jump saw Venus Morgan take 3rd place in the ‘A’ with her season’s best effort of 5.27 metres. Emily Dye made her senior debut in the ‘B’ where she took 2nd place with her leap of 4.87 metres. Philip May was in further action in the men’s triple jump, winning the ‘A’ and jumping a new personal best distance 12.22 metres, an improvement of 66 centimetres. James Wardle was the winner of the ‘B’ with his season’s best jump 11.96 metres. In the women’s triple jump Abbie Haigh took 2nd place in the ‘A’ with her jump of 10.06 metres and Rosie Shepherd was the winner of the ‘B’ jumping a big new PB of 9.86 metres, an improvement of 2.23 metres.
Out in the throwing area British Masters athlete John Twiddle was in action in the shot, discus and hammer events. He was the ‘A’ thrower in the shot taking 2nd place with a throw of 12.02 metres and Joshua Tranmer was the winner of the ‘B’ with his season’s best throw of 11.22 metres. The discus saw England under 18 champion Joshua Tranmer take 2nd place in the ‘A’ with a new PB of 41.83 metres, an improvement of 1.59 metres, and John Twiddle took 2nd place in the ‘B’ with his season’s best throw of 34.85 metres. John Twiddle took 2nd place in the hammer ‘A’ with a season’s best effort of 40.79 metres. Gregan Clarkson added another string to his bow, making his debut appearance in the hammer he took 5th place in the ‘B’ and established a PB of 12.73 metres. The men’s javelin saw Simon Downs take 2nd in the ‘A’ with a season’s best throw of 39.59 metres, and Daniel Holiday took 2nd in the ‘B’ with his season’s best throw of 32.74 metres. The women’s shot event saw Olivia Stevenson take 4th place in the ‘A’ with a season’s best throw of 9.09 metres and Sonia Dos Santos in her first competitive shot putt took 2nd place in the ‘B’ and established a PB of 8.83 metres. In the discus Olivia Stevenson took 5th place in the ‘A’ with her throw of 28.69 metres, and Diane Smith once again stepped out of retirement throwing a season’s best of 12.15 metres in the ‘B’ for 6th place. The pair were back on familiar territory in the hammer circle where Olivia was the winner of the ‘A’ with a throw of 53.60 metres and Diane took 3rd place in the ‘B’ with a season’s best throw of 31.71 metres. The women’s javelin featured sprinter Megan Hoult and sprint hurdler Sonia Dos Santos. In the ‘A’ Sonia threw a new PB of 21.69 metres, an increase of 3.25 metres for 5th place, and Megan took 3rd place in the ‘B’ throwing a new PB 21.36 metres, an increase of 75 centimetres.
RELAYS
Women’s 4 x 100 Metres
The KIngston quartet of Megan Hoult, Venus Morgan, Sonia Dos Santos and Amy Sampson took 2nd place in the race and ran a time of 50.35 sec.
Men’s 4 x 100 Metres
The men’s team of Adam Coles, James Wardle, Daniel Holiday and Joe Cooper were the race winners and they clocked a time of 45.20 sec.
Men’s 4 x 400 Metres
The Kingston team of Joe Cooper, Kyle Foster, Harry Hudson and Lawrence Baird were the race winners and they posted a time of 3:31.70 sec.
