Match 2 – Woodbourn Road, Sheffield

The Kingston senior team’s second league match brought a journey to the Woodbourn Road stadium in Sheffield, the home track of the Hallamshire Harriers club. The other four teams competing in the match were Derby AC, Rotherham Harriers, Chesterfield AC and Lincoln Wellington. We were blessed by good weather, for the second successive match it was a hot dry and sunny day. The team once again was a mix of senior athletes, augmented by some of the clubs outstanding under 17’s and under20’s from the youth team.
Kingston had arrived at Woodbourn Road as the league leaders and another outstanding team performance saw them consolidate the victory they gained at the season opener in Derby. They collected the maximum 6 league points and the league table saw them at the top of the ladder with 12 league points with Derby 2nd on 10, Rotherham 3rd with 8, Hallamshire 4th on 6, Chesterfield 5th with 4 and Lincoln Wellington were in 6th place with 2 points. The next match will take place in Lincoln on Sunday July the 8th.
Details of all of the Kingston athlete’s performances on the day are as follows.
The men’s 100 and 200 metre sprints were covered by Joe Cooper and Adam Coles. The 100 metres saw Joe take 3rd place in the ‘A’ running a time of 11.43 sec and Adam also took 3rd in the ‘B’ with his run of 11.81 sec. Joe Cooper took 2nd place in the 200 metres ‘A’ clocking a time of 23.12 sec, whilst Adam Coles was 2nd in the ‘B’ running a new PB of 23.74 sec, an improvement of 0.11sec The women’s 100 metres saw Megan Hoult winning the ‘A’ and posting a time of 12.52 sec. Amy Sampson took 6th place in the ‘B’ with her run of 14.11sec. Megan also ran the 200 metres ‘A’ taking 4th place with her run of 26.34 sec, with Chloe Constable running a season’s best time of 28.40 sec for 5th place in the ‘B’. The men’s 400 metres saw Daniel Holiday taking 4th place in the ‘A’ running a season’s best time of 52.74 sec. Simon Downs volunteered to run the ‘B’ taking 6th place with his season’s best time of 61.65 sec. In the women’s 400 metres Jessica Cappleman took 5th place in the ‘A’ running a new PB of 64.47 sec, an improvement of 5.23 sec. Jessica Fields took 3rd place in the ‘B’ with her run of 64.30 sec. In the men’s 800 metres ‘A’ Kyle Foster ran a season’s best time of 2:00.64 sec for 5th place and in the ‘B’ 15 year old Callum Featherstone took 3rd place with a great run of 2:05.85 a new PB and an improvement of 3.95 sec. The women’s 800 metres ‘A’ saw Jessica Cappleman running a new PB of 2:23.21 sec, an improvement of 1.83 sec, for 4th place. 15 year old Rosie Shepherd put in a huge effort in the ‘B’ taking 4th place and running a new PB of 2:46.95 sec, an improvement of 3.55 sec.
Icelandic international Baldvin Magnusson took 2nd place in the 1500 metres ‘A’ running a new PB of 4:00.15 sec, an improvement of 5.98 sec. Training partner Harry Powell was the winner of the ‘B’ running a season’s best time of 4:01.78 sec and Joshua Taylor-Brown a former Kingston athlete, now with Hallamshire, was 3rd with his season’s best run of 4:17.95 sec. In the men’s 5000 metres ‘A’ Gregan Clarkson covered the 12 and a half lap race in 18:11.49 sec, for a 5th place finish, despite suffering with a calf injury. Simon Downs also took 5th place in the ‘B’ with his run of 19:17.67 sec and he too was carrying an injury. Simon had another outing in the 110 metres hurdles ‘A’ taking 4th place in 25.66 sec, whilst in the ‘B’ Philip May ran in his first ever hurdles race taking 4th place and establishing a PB of 26.28 sec. Sonia Dos Santos took 3rd place in the women’s 100 metres hurdles where she ran a time of 16.23 sec. Daniel Holiday saw further action in the men’s 400 metres hurdles ‘A’, where he was the race winner and ran a time of 57.93 sec. The ‘B’ saw a most welcome return to action by Nathan Hood who took 2nd place in the race and established a PB of 78.53 sec. Gregan Clarkson and Simon Downs were back together in the 3000 metres steeplechase which saw Simon taking 6th place in the ‘A’ with his run of 12:00.04 sec and Gregan 2nd place in the ‘B’ in 12:32.47 sec. The women’s pole vault ‘A’ saw Clare Blunt making her first Northern league appearance of 2018, she is a great competitor and won the event with her clearance at a height of 3.30 metres. In the men’s event Nathan Hood who was making his first appearance in the pole vault since 2015 took 3rd place in the ‘A’ going clear at a height of 2.20 metres. The women’s high jump saw 15 year old Alanah Thoresby make her senior league debut in the ‘A’ where she took 2nd place going clear at a season’s best height of 1.55 metres. Rosie Shepherd took 3rd place in the ‘B’ clearing a height of 1.45 metres. Freddie Capes cleared a season’s best height of 1.65 metres in the men’s high jump ‘A’ for 5th place. Philip May took 4th place in the ‘B’ going clear at 1.50 metres. In The women’s long jump two more 15 year olds, Emily Dye and Abbie Haigh were in action, Emily took 3rd place in the ‘A’ with her leap of 4.70 metres and Abbie was also 3rd in the ‘B’ with her jump of 4.39 metres. The men’s long jump saw Adam Coles taking 4th place in the ‘A’ with a jump of 5.89 metres and James Wardle was 2nd in the ‘B’ with 5.70 metres. The women’s triple jump saw Abbie Haigh win the ‘A’ with her jump of 10.01 metres. 15 year old Evie Watson, making her senior league debut, took 2nd place in the ‘B’ with her jump of 9.37 metres. In the men’s triple jump James Wardle took 5th place in the ‘A’ with 11.87 metres and Philip May was 2nd in the ‘B’ with 11.57 metres. In the throwing events John Twiddle was the winner of the shot putt ‘A’ with his season’s best throw of 11.84 metres and Josh Tranmer made it a double celebration, winning the ‘B’ with his season’s best throw of 11.41 metres. The women’s shot saw Ollie Stevenson take 4th place in the ‘A’ with a throw of 8.47 metres and Sian Kerry took 5th in the ‘B’ with her throw of 7.06 metres. The men’s hammer paired the British Masters champion John Twiddle in the ‘A’ and hammer coach Dave Smith, the 1986 Commonwealth champion, who stepped out of retirement to aid the teams cause in the ‘B’. John took 3rd place in the ‘A’ where he threw a new PB of 42.65 metres, an improvement of 1.53 metres. Dave took 2nd place in the ‘B’ and registered his season’s best throw of 37.81 metres.
The women’s hammer saw training partners Ollie Stevenson and Maggie Okul in action. Ollie was the winner of the ‘A’ with her throw of 55.11 metres and Maggie was the winner of the ‘B’ where she threw 51.80 metres. A third member of the Hull Hammer Squad was also in action, Alice Barnsdale who took 2nd place in the ‘A’ with 52.45 metres for her parent club Lincoln Wellington. John Twiddle and Josh Tranmer were back in action in the men’s discus, which saw Josh taking 2nd place in the ‘A’ with his throw of 39.90 metres and John took 3rd place in the ‘B’ with 29.48 metres. The women’s discus saw two 15 year olds Jess Townsend and Faye Oliver making their debuts for the senior team. Both girls were nervous but they competed well and picked up vital points for the team. Jess took 6th place in the ‘A’ with her throw of 24.61 metres and Faye was 4th in the ‘B’ with 21.38 metres. In the men’s javelin Simon Downs took 3rd place in the ‘A’ with his season’s best throw of 39.65 metres and Nathan Hood took 4th in the ‘B’ with his season’s best of 28.40 metres. In the women’s javelin Maggie Okul took 4th place in the ‘A’ with her season’s best time of 25.91 metres and Sian Kerry was 2nd in the ‘B’ with 24.54 metres.
RELAYS
Women’s – 4 x 100 Metres
The Kingston team of Chloe Constable, Megan Hoult, Sonia Dos Santos and Emily Dye were the race winners running a time of 51.00 sec.
Men’s – 4 x 100 Metres
The Kingston team of Adam Coles, Baldvin Magnusson, Daniel Holiday and Joe Cooper were the winners of the race running a time of 47.00 sec.
Women’s 4 x 400 Metres
The Kingston Foursome of Jess Cappleman, Jess Fields, Abbie Haigh and Rosie Shepherd took 4th place and ran a time of 4:25.22 sec.
Men’s – 4 x 400 Metres
The men’s relay team were Baldvin Magnusson, Kyle Foster, Joe Cooper and Dan Holiday who took 3rd place and ran a time of 3:34.40 sec.
Non Scorers – 100 metres Race
Jess Fields ran in the non scorers 100 metres race where she took 3rd place and ran a time of 13.71 sec.
