Humber Track League Meeting
Quibell Park, Scunthorpe – Sunday 23rd September 2018
The final Humber Track League meeting of 2018 took place at Quibell Park, the home track of Scunthorpe & District AC. Athletes from all of the clubs based around the river Humber, travelled to Scunthorpe, as well as a good number from clubs further afield. Kingston were represented by 10 of the clubs junior and youth athletes.
Under 13 Girls
Sprinter Libby Hakney, who is in her second year with Kingston, has made good progress throughout this year. On her debut appearance at this January’s Northern indoor championship, she ran in the 60 metre final. At Mays County championships she was the 100 metres silver medallist. Augusts Northern Track & field championships, in Liverpool, saw Libby run in both the 100 and 200 metres finals. She also won her first County vest at the Inter Counties meeting at Nottingham, in September. At the track league meeting she was in competition in the 100 and 200 metre sprints. She was the winner of both races, running a time of 13.9 sec in the 100 and 28.5 sec in the 200 metres.
Tonisha Pickering was involved in the action on both the track and field. She took 5th place behind Libby in the 100 metres, where she clocked a time of 16.4 sec. The long jump saw her take a 2nd place finish with her leap of 3.87 metres. Further track action saw her running in the 70 metre hurdles race. This is a new event for Tonisha, who has been training hard with her coach for several months. This was her first ever race over the hurdles, where she took 3rd place in the race and established a PB of 14.1 sec.
Another good all round athlete is Beth Moodie, who has made good progress this year. At this meeting, she took 4th place in the 70 metres hurdles, where she ran a time of 14.6 sec. The long jump competition saw her take 5th place, with a leap of 3.62 metres. She was the winner of the javelin event, putting in a throw of 23.17 metres. Beth has added 9.45 metres to her javelin best this year, where she is currently ranked No. 3 in Yorkshire.
Izzy Watts made her Northern Championship debut at January’s indoor meeting in Sheffield where she competed in the shot putt final and ran in the heats of the 60 metre sprints. In May she took the shot title at the County Championships and was also the bronze medallist in the high jump. She won her first County vest at the Inter Counties meeting in Nottingham. She was in competition in shot, high jump and javelin at Scunthorpe. She was the winner of the high jump, going clear at a new PB height of 1.31 metres, an improvement of 3cm. The Yorkshire ranked No. 1, took a second victory in the shot event with her throw of 7.98 metres. Her throw of 19.82 metres in the javelin gave her a 2nd place finish in the event.
Lydia Moore gained her first experience of a major championship meeting, at January’s Northern Indoor event. She competed in the shot final, together with her training partner Izzy Watts. She took the silver medal in the shot at May’s County championships. Selection for September’s Inter Counties match at Nottingham’s Harvey Hadden Stadium was secured, winning her first County vest. At Scunthorpe she was in action in the long jump, shot and javelin competitions. She secured a 3rd place finish in the long jump, with her leap of 3.83 metres. In the shot, the Yorkshire ranked No. 2 took 2nd place, with her throw of 7.71 metres. Her throw of 14.21 metres in the javelin gave her a 4th place finish.
Under 15 Girls
Rebecca Westhead made her Kingston debut at the 2017 September Open meeting. 2018 has seen her competing for the junior team, in the UK Youth development league. She has been involved in further action, in the Humber track league and at Open meetings. She made her Inter Counties debut in Nottingham, where she ran in the 100 metres sprints and the 75 metres hurdles race. The 75 metres hurdles was her focus at Scunthorpe. She was the winner of the race, running a time of 14.8 sec.
Under 15 Boys
Connor Pickering has been with Kingston since 2012, he is a multi talented athlete who can cover all jumps, throws and runs. A member of the Kingston junior team for the last four years, he will move up to the under 17’s in 2019. He is the reigning County javelin champion, who also won County bronze medals in the shot putt and long jump events, at this May’s championship meeting. He was in action in the 100 metres sprints, shot and javelin at the track league meeting. He took 2nd place in the 100 metres, running a new PB of 13.6 sec, an improvement of half a second. He picked up a second victory in the shot, throwing the 4kg weight 11.08 metres. A third victory was achieved in the javelin competition, where he launched a new PB of 35.03 metres, an improvement of 1.35 metres.
Gabriel Li La-Vigars made his Kingston debut in a track league meeting, at Grimsby, this April. He has a great enthusiasm for everything he does, he learns quickly and soon made his mark. The month of May saw him winning his first medal, a javelin bronze, at the County championships. A week later he was competing with the junior team in the UK YDL League. He won his first county vest at Nottingham in September. He was in competition in the track league in the 100 metre sprints, long jump and javelin events. The 100 metres saw him take 3rd place in the race, running a new PB of 13.9 sec, an improvement of 4 tenths of a second. He was the winner of the long jump, where he put in a leap of 3.96 metres. He was the 3rd place finisher in the javelin, throwing a new PB of 27.39 metres, an improvement of 1.28m.
Alex Chivers is now in his fifth competitive season with the club. He made his debut for the junior team in 2016 and has given three years of excellent service to them. He won his third County vest at this year’s Inter Counties match in Nottingham. Alex is a thrower who competes in all four of the disciplines, the hammer, shot, discus and javelin. His focus at this meeting was on the shot and javelin events. He took 2nd place in the shot competition, throwing a distance of 7.68 metres. The javelin event saw him take a 2nd place finish, launching a new PB of 28.14 metres, an improvement of 74cm.
Under 17 Women
Multi-eventer Rosie Shepherd made the move up from pentathlon to heptathlon, this year. This June she represented the County at the North East Schools combined events championships, which were held in Middlesbrough. She was in action in the under 17 women’s heptathlon, where she took an 8th place finish. She was the triple jump gold medallist at this year’s County championships and secured the bronze medal in the javelin. Rosie competed regularly for both the youth team and the senior team in their 2018 league campaigns. A second County vest came, when she was selected for the Northern Athletics Inter Counties championship meeting, at Leigh, where she ran in the 80 metres hurdles and the 100 metres sprints. At the Quibell Park meeting she elected to compete in the 80 metres hurdles, high jump and shot putt. She was the winner of the 80 metre hurdles race, where she ran a time of 13.3 sec. A 2nd place finish was taken in the high jump, where she cleared a height of 1.45 metres. Rosie’s throw of 6.12 metres in the shot event, gave her another 2nd place finish
