2018 Cross Country Cup – Round 1

Sir John Nelthorpe School, Brigg – Saturday 1st October 2018 

The English Schools Athletics Association ‘Cross Country Cup’ is an annual team competition for young athletes aged between 12 years and 16 years of age. It is open to both boys and girls who represent their schools in two age categories. Junior boys and girls who must be aged at least 12 years but under14 and intermediate boys and girls aged at least 14 but under16 years of age. It is a national competition and the opening round sees all of the entrants competing in their local County area, with the highest placed teams going forward to compete in the regional final.

Round 1 of the 2018 cross country cup, in the Humberside region, took place at the Sir John Nelthorpe Lower School in Brigg, on Monday the 1st of October. Ten schools from the east Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire competed at the event. The schools involved were, Sir John Nelthorpe, Longroft (Beverley), Wolfreton (Anlaby), South Hunsley (North Ferriby), St Bedes (Scunthorpe), Pocklington, Hornsea, Hymers, Snaith (Goole) and Huntcliffe (Gainsborough). In the first round of competition, at least two teams of both boys and girls,  in each age category, go forward to the regional final.

The teams which qualified for the regional final were:-

Thirteen Kingston upon Hull AC athletes, competed for their individual schools at the competition. Their performance details are as follows.

Junior Boys

Nathan Hope was the sole Kingston athlete, in the junior boy’s race, where he was running for South Hunsley School. In a field of 36 runners, he took 13th place in the race, covering the course in a time of 13.05 sec.

Junior Girls

Four Kingston athletes were involved in the junior girls race, where 40 runners were in competition. Meabh Brannigan (South Hunsley), took 2nd place, running a time of 9:08 sec. Her Kingston and school colleague, Anya Beetham, was the next runner over the finish line. Taking 3rd place with her run of 9:20 sec. Beth Moodie (Wolfreton) finished in 17th place and she covered the course in a time of 10:57 sec. Holly Cresswell, running for Sir John Nelthorpe School, finished in 40th place, covering the course in 14.03 sec. It must be pointed out that Holly trains for the sprints, long jump and shot.

Intermediate Boys

Three of Kingston’s leading junior middle distance, and cross country runners, were among a field of 40 athletes contesting, the intermediate boy’s race. Thomas Smales (South Hunsley) was the winner of the race, running the course, in a time of 12:20 sec. His Training partner Adam Fox (Longcroft) took 2nd place in the race, running a time of 13:38 sec. In 4th place was Oliver Adnitt (Longcroft), another member of the training group, who covered the course, in a time of 13:10 sec.

Intermediate Girls

Five Kingston athletes were in competition in a field of 32 runners, in the intermediate girls race. The first of the five girls to cross the finish line was Hermione Pickering(South Hunsley) who took 2nd place, running the course in a time of 12:13 sec. Emilia Russell(South Hunsley) took 4th place in the race, running a time of 12:33 sec. Jessica Waugh, also (South Hunsley) was the 5th place finisher, with her run of 12:39 sec. 6th place went to (Wolfreton) athlete Ella Shaw-Hall, who covered the course in a time of 13.08 sec. Eve Anderson (South Hunsley) was the 14th place finisher, running the course in a time of 13:48 sec.
