39th Barton & District AC Cross Country Meeting
Baysgarth Park Barton – Sunday 20th January 2019
The 39th annual Barton & District cross country meeting, took place in Baysgarth Park, Barton on Humber, on Sunday the 20th of January. Eighteen of Kingston upon Hull AC’s athletes, made the journey over the Humber Bridge, to compete at the event. There was a strong turnout of runners, from clubs in the East Riding of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
Details of the performances by Kingston athletes are as follows.
Under 13’s
Lydia Greenwood made her club debut at the 2017 Kingston September Open meeting. She made her cross country debut, at the 2018 Barton event, where she was a 6th place finisher. She competed throughout 2018, in the Humber track league, as well as at open events. At this meeting Lydia was in action in the under 13 girl’s race, where she took another 6th place finish, running the course, in a time of 13:12 sec.
Will Fairburn joined the clubs junior training group in 2014. He is a prolific park runner, who rarely misses a weekend run. 2018 saw him competing with the junior team, in the UK YDL league, where he was an ever present, seeing action in every match, covering sprints, middle distance and javelin. He also represented the club, at the Northern cross country relay championships. Last year he made his first appearance at Barton, where he was a 13th place finisher. At this year’s event he took 11th place, covering the course in 14:03 sec.
Under 15’s
Four training partners were in action in the under 15 girl’s race, Hermione Pickering, Georgina North, Aimee Campbell, and Amy Rothery. They represented the club, at both the 2018 Northern cross country relay championships, plus the National relay championships. All four are members of the junior team, covering middle distance. Amy Rothery also throws the hammer for the team. Hermione was making her Barton cross country debut, at this meeting, where she was the winner of the race, navigating the course, in a time of 17:43 sec. Georgina, who had finished in 13th place at the 2018 event, this time took a 3rd place finish in the race, running the course, in a time of 19.08 sec. Last year Aimee finished in 14th place in this race, this year she ran the course in a time of 19:20 sec, which saw her post a 4th place finish. Amy Rotherey had debuted at the 2018 event, where she had finished in 11th place. This year she took a 7th place finish, running the course in a time of 20.57 sec.
The Kingston under 15 girl’s team won the team gold medal. Only the first three runner’s home, Hermione Pickering, Georgina North and Aimee Campbell were awarded medals.
Two training partners, Tom Smales and Adam Fox, were in action in the under 15 boy’s race. They both joined Kingston AC in the summer of 2015, starting on the same night, in a new middle distance group. They made their competitive debuts, in October of that year, at the Northern Counties cross country relay championships. February 2016 saw them make their debuts at the Barton cross country meeting. Adam was the 5th place finisher at both the 2016 and 2017 events. Tom was the bronze medallist in both 2017 and 2018. This year they were both looking to get in among the medals. Tom Smales ran the course in a time of 14:46 sec, to take the gold medal, whilst Adam Fox was the bronze medallist, running the course in a time of 15:35 sec.
Under 17 Women
Cara Portz has been training at Costello since the summer of 2018. She made her debut appearance, at this year’s Barton cross country meeting. She navigated the course in a time of 35:28 sec, to take a 5th place finish in the race.
Under 17 Men
Harry Hudson has been a Kingston athlete since the spring of 2016. His first outing at the Barton meeting, was at the 2018 event, where he was the winner of the under 17 men’s race. He was back again at this year’s meeting, looking to defend his title, which he duly did. He covered the course in a time of 22:30 sec, to win his second consecutive gold medal.
Under 20 Men
Prior to this year Alex Wilson had done all of his running, in the Hull park runs and out on the road. He decided to give cross country a go, to see how it went. His first race was at the 2019 County championships, in Scunthorpe, where he was an unexpected gold medallist. The Barton race saw, him taking on his second cross country competition. Once again he was the race winner, securing another gold medal, running the course, in a time of 39:42 sec.
Senior Women
Jess Cappleman has been a Kingston athlete since 2012.Over the years, the overwhelming majority of her performances, have been on the track, over the 800 and 1500 metres distances. She has been a stalwart performer, firstly for the youth team and then the senior team. Last October she ran at the Cleethorpes beach terrain, cross country race, where she was the 2nd place finisher. A month later she was the winner of the annual Scunthorpe AC cross country open meeting. Her next outing was at this Barton event, which saw her take a 4th place finish, covering the course, in a time of 27:17 sec. Masters athlete (V45) Sharon Tummons is primarily a road runner, taking on all distances up to and including the marathon. She ran her first cross country race, at the 2018 Barton event, and was back again this year, where she took 34th place, running the course in a time of 34.14 sec. Another master’s athlete (V40) Hayley Watson, made her cross country debut at the 2019 county championships. Her second outing was at this Barton meeting, where she placed 35th, navigating the course in 34:17 sec. Joanne Osborne ran the course in 42:11 sec, taking 61st place.
Senior Men
V(35) athlete Gregan Clarkson has won the Barton cross country title on 4 occasions. He was competing again, in this year’s senior men’s race. He was one of three Kingston athletes in the race. He covered the course in a time of 37:43 sec, taking 4th place in the race. (V40) Paul Osborne, who made his cross country debut in this race, came home in 32nd place, running the course in 43:48 sec. (V35) Lee Craven who was also making his cross country debut appearance, came home just two seconds behind His fellow road runner, crossing the line in 33rd place, running the course in a time of 43:50 sec.
Gregan Clarkson received one of the three senior men’s veteran prizes. He was the first veteran to finish the race.
