Five of Kingston upon Hull AC’s junior athletes, were in competition at the Northern under 13’s & under 15’s, championship meeting, which was held at the English Institute of Sports stadium in Sheffield, on Sunday the 3rd of February.

Details of the five athlete’s performances on the day are as follows.

Under 13 Girls

Freya Vidal has been a Kingston athlete, since the summer of 2014. She is a sprinter and long jumper, who was the 80 metres and 150 metres sprint champion, at the 2017 County championships. At last year’s event she was a 100 metres finalist.She is a member of the Kingston junior team, which competes in the UK Youth Development League. This meeting marked her debut at a major championship meeting. She was in action in the 60 metres and the 200 metres sprint competition. Her day began in the 60 metre sprints, where she was drawn to run in the first of the heats. The race saw her run her season’s best time of 9.14 sec, to take a 5th place finish, which saw her qualify to run in the semi finals. The draw placed her in the last of the three semi finals, where she took 7th place in the race, running a time of 9.37 sec. The 200 metres event saw her drawn in heat 3, where she was the 3rd place finisher, running a new PB of 31.13 sec, an improvement of 0.17 of a sec. It also saw her gain qualification for her second semi final of the day. The draw saw her seeded in the second of the three semi finals, where she took a 6th place finish, running her second new PB of the day, posting a new best mark of 30.60 sec, an improvement of 0.23 sec, on her run in the heats.

Under 15 Girls

Sprinter Libby Hakney made her Kingston debut, at the club’s 2017 Spring Open meeting.  Within a few weeks she was competing with the junior team, where she is now a permanent fixture. She was the 100 metres silver medallist, at the 2018 County championships. At last Augusts Northern track and field championships, in Liverpool, she ran in the finals of both the 100 and 200 metres competitions. She was in action at this championship meeting, in both the 60 metres and the 200 metres sprint events. In the draw for the 60 metres she was seeded in heat 3, where her season’s best run of 8.76 sec, saw her take 3rd place in the race and gain qualification for the semi finals. She went in the third of the semi finals, where she again ran her season’s best time of 8.76 sec, but she missed out on the cut for the final. The 200 metres competition consisted of 8 heats, 5 qualifiers and 3 semi finals, followed by the final. Libby was drawn to run in heat 5, where she took a 3rd place finish, running a season’s best time of 28.53 sec, which gave her a spot in the second of the qualifying races, where she was the 4th place finisher, with her run of 28.94 sec. Missing out on the semi finals, by just two hundredths of a second.  

Combined eventer’s, and training partners Izzy Watts and Lydia Moore, were also in action in the sprint competitions. Izzy ran in the 60 metres competition, where she was drawn in the first of the day’s heats. She took 8th place in the race running a new PB of 9.68 sec, an improvement of 0.23 sec. Lydia ran in heat 8 of the 200 metres competition, where she put in a season’s best run of 32.07 sec, for a 5th place finish in the race. Both girls were in further competition in the shot putt. Reigning County champion Izzy Watts, was seeded to throw in pool ‘A’, where her season’s best effort of 7.31 metres, saw her take 15th place. County silver medallist Lydia Moore was in action in pool ‘B’, where she took a 7th place finish, throwing a new PB of 7.46 metres, an improvement of 76 centimetres on her previous best mark.

Under 15 Boys

Gabriel Li La-Vigars made his club debut last April. He has amassed a lot of competitive experience since then. He was the javelin bronze medallist, at the 2018 County championships, and competed for the junior team, in their UK YDL league matches. He also won his first County vest, throwing the javelin at the Inter County match in Nottingham. He stepped up another level at this competition, which was his debut appearance at a major championship meeting. He was in action in two events, the 60 metres sprints and the long jump. He was drawn in heat 3 of the 60 metres, where he was the 8th place finisher, running a season’s best time of 8.70 sec. In the long jump final, he took 9th place, jumping a new PB of 4.41 metres, an improvement of 36 centimetres.
