Three Indoor Meetings
Student Matches & Northern Athletics Open Meeting
Two Kingston upon Hull athletes who are no strangers to competing indoors opened up their winter season in unfamiliar colours, both having started university courses in October.
Venus Morgan had her quickest ever journey to an event taking the short walk from her student accommodation to the Loughborough High Performance Centre for the university athletics club’s first indoor open event of the season. Despite still adjusting to a new training regime and having done little specific speed training she produced two outstanding runs over 60 metres. She won her first race in 8.04 sec and shaved a further 0.02 sec off this time in her second outing of the day to record a new personal best by 0.01 sec.
Adam Coles was selected to represent Leeds University in the annual Manchester Cup, an event contested by universities & colleges from across the north of England. 18 year old Coles, the reigning Northern under 20 60m hurdles champion, this time confined his activities to the sand pit where he took third place in the long jump (5.89m) and 6th in the triple jump (12.12m) – in both events only being beaten by athletes in the under 23 & senior age groups.
In previous years Jodie Martin has spent her winters battling with the elements competing in cross country and road running events. This year as a first year under 20 she is experimenting with indoor competition and made the trip to Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport where Northern Athletics staged their second open event of the autumn season. Jodie contested the 600m event and posted an impressive time of 1:37.33 seconds, with only Liverpool Harriers junior international Emma Alderson posting a better performance in her age group.
