Northern Athletics Track & Field Championships
Robin Park, Wigan – Saturday & Sunday 16/17th August 2014
The annual Northern Athletics Under 17 & 15 Championships were this year held in Lancashire, at Robin Park in Wigan.
There was a splendid turn-out of athletes from every corner of the North of England. They were encouraged and cheered on by a large and enthusiastic crowd of friends and families, plus many neutral athletics supporters.
The weather on both Saturday and Sunday consisted of sunshine and showers, together with a strong and biting wind. Temperatures hovered around 15 degrees.
Our athletes came home with a haul of 6 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals. There were some exceptional performances on both days and we are very proud of the achievements of our young athletes.
The standout Performances over the weekend, were as follows.
Joshua Tranmer
Josh has had a tremendous season in the Youth Development League where he won both the shot and discus competitions at every meeting. He also won the discus at the recent Inter Counties meeting in Derby. Here at the Northern Championships he won the gold medals in both Discus and Shot Putt.
Maggie Okul
Maggie too has had a great competitive season, including a 4th place at the English Schools Championships. She represented Northern England at the International meeting in Cardiff. She also successfully defended her Northern under 20 Championship in June. She defended her under 17 championship winning her 4th Northern Athletics gold medal and in the process she set a new championship record in the Hammer with a Throw of 53.18m.
Charlotte Paterson
Charlotte has been an outstanding performer for the club in the league meetings and she won a superb silver medal at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham this July. She won the gold medal in the Under 17’s 100 metres race and took 4th place in the 200 metres.
Olivia Stevenson
Ollie won a silver medal in the hammer throw at the English Schools Championships and she has won every hammer competition in the league meetings. She also won the Hammer and discus events at the Liverpool Throws earlier this year. At the Northern Championships she won gold medals in both the under 15 ‘s Hammer and Discus throws.

Dominic Singh
Dom is a great competitor and an invaluable member of our youth team sprint squad. He won silver medals at both 100 and 200 metres in the under 17’s.
Harry Stutely
Harry is a member of our junior team. He Won the silver medal in the under 15’s Pole Vault Competition. He also took 5th place in the Long Jump.
Laura Copley
Won the silver medal in the under 17’s Discus throw and finished in 9th place in the shot putt competition.
Hannah Kynman
Hannah is a member of our junior team. She won the bronze medal in the under 15’s 200 metres and she also finished 7th in the 100 metres.
Jonathon Beharrell
Jonny is one of our very promising middle distance runners. He won the bronze medal in the under 17’s 400 metres. He also took 5th place in the 800 metres final.
Sophie O’Hara
Sophie was in 6th place in the under 17’s discus throw and also finished 6th in the under 17’s shot putt.
Venus Morgan
Venus took 5th place in the under 15’s Long Jump
Libby Wheeler
Libby finished in 7th place in the under 15’s Long Jump.
Natalie Varga
Natalie took 4th place in the under 15’s Pole Vault.
Emily Lyons
Emily is a member of our youth sides very impressive relay team. She took 5th place in the under 17’s 100 metres and she set a new PB of 12.71s. She also finished in 7th place in the 200 metres final.
Matthew Backhouse
Matthew is one of our fast improving sprinters. He took 6th place in the 200 metres final.
Shaun Smith
Shaun pounds out the hard yards in one of the most gruelling events. He took 5th place in the 3000 metres final.
Amelia Benson
Amelia is one of our promising junior sprinters she finished in 5th place in the under 15’s 100 metres.
Marcel Dalee
Marcel is a middle distance runner of great promise. He took 7th place in the under 17’s 400 metres final.
