British Masters Throws Pentathlon

Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, 20th September 2014

Kingston’s John Twiddle represented the club in the British Masters throws Pentathlon which was held at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on 20th September 2014.

John competes in the veteran category (V45) this is senior athletes who have reached the age of 45 but are under 50 years of age. Don’t let that fool you however. Veteran events are keenly contested across the full range of events.

He competes for the club in the Northern Senior League. He never misses a meeting. He is always willing to give advice to any up and coming ‘Thrower’ and the youngsters couldn’t have a better role model. He is an indispensable member of our team.

The ‘Throws Pentathlon’ consists of five throwing events. The athletes earn points for the distance thrown and these are calculated by using the Decathlon points scoring tables. The person who amasses the most points over the five disciplines is the winner of the competition.

John’s performances on the day were as follows:-

Hammer

A throw of 37.86 metres gave a total of 626 points.

Shot Putt

A putt of 11.16 metres gained him 692 points.

Discus

A throw of 33.10 metres gave him another 662 points.

Javelin

A throw measuring 27.85 metres earned him 336 points.

35 pounds weight throw

A throw of 11.67 metres earned him another 658 points.

John’s total of 2974 points gave him the gold medal and a new PB beating the 2700 points he scored in 2011 when he won the silver medal.

It also gave him a winning margin of 228 points over Dave Brown of Liverpool Pembroke.

This was John’s 4th British Masters Gold Medal of the season. He won the individual Hammer, shot putt and weight throw At Birmingham in August of this year.

He is now in training for the one remaining competition of the 2014 outdoor season. The Yorkshire Veterans Championships, which will be held in Cleckheaton on the 12th of October.
