Wrexham ‘The Final Flings’ Throwathon
Sunday 28th September 2014
Maggie Okul and Olivia Stevenson made the long journey down to Wales to represent The Hull Hammer Squad at the end of season ‘Throwathon’ at the Queensway Stadium in Wrexham.
It was a hot, sunny and humid day in the Principality and the event drew throwers from the Midland’s and Northern England in addition to all parts of Wales.
The long competitive season is drawing to a close and it has been another successful one for the two girls. Both of them won double gold medals at the Northern Championships and they both medalled at the National Championships. Olivia also struck silver at the English Schools Championships.
They competed in a ‘Throwathon’. This is an event where all competitors take part in all the throwing disciplines. That is Hammer, Discus, Shot and Javelin. Points are awarded in each of the events in accordance with the distance achieved.
Olivia competed in the under 15 girls competition and Maggie in the under 17 women’s.
Olivia Stevenson
In the Hammer she dominated the competition from the first throw to the last and she finished almost 10 metres ahead of her nearest rival. She also set a new PB of 54.26m.
The discus saw her throw a distance of 32.08m.and in the Shot 9.82m.
The Javelin saw Ollie set another new PB of 16.13m.
She amassed a total of 2058 points which set a new Meeting Record. She won the overall gold medal for the Throwathon and two silver medals in the Shot and the Discus.
Maggie Okul
The Hammer competition brought another classic encounter with one of Maggie’s fiercest rivals, Katie Lambert who is the England and English Schools Champion. The two have clashed at competitions all over England this season and all of their meetings have been close fought encounters. This one saw more of the same Maggie taking the silver medal just 44 centimetres behind Katie, with a throw of 52.92m.
Maggie had the satisfaction though of picking up the overall silver medal for the Throwathon event, with a points total of 2035, and Katie failing to medal. Fierce rivals but good friends.
The Discus saw a new PB with a throw of 24.59m. The Javelin saw a throw of 27.21m.and in the Shot Maggie’s best effort on the day was one of 9.47m.
The two girls now have one remaining event this season, the most enjoyable one of all, the annual meeting of the ‘Hammer Circle’, this year at the Costello Stadium in Hull, on the 18th and 19th of this month.
