National Youth Development League – East 2 – Round 1

Princess Mary Stadium, Cleckheaton

Saturday 18th April 2015

The upper youth team, athletes who compete in the under17 and under20 age categories opened their 2015 league campaign at Cleckheaton on Saturday 18th of April.

Our opposition for this season are the teams representing Spenborough, Bingley, Rotherham and Grimsby. We meet in four competitions during April, May, June and July.

We have set our sights on promotion this year. We have some of the best young athletes in Northern England at the club and all of them will be giving their best efforts to achieve our aim.

All track and field events are included in the competition and matches last for around five hours.

Some of the clubs athletes failed to turn out for the meeting but the team did not let that daunt them. Everyone there gave 100 per cent and we covered some of the gaps, with athletes moving out of their comfort zones and taking on extra and unfamiliar events.

The team put on a fantastic show and we saw personal best performances and season’s best efforts all over the field. They were a credit to the club and they should be very proud of their performances.

The Kingston team won the competition and finished 112 event points ahead of the 2nd placed team Rotherham Harriers & AC. We collected the maximum 5 league points.

We go into our next meeting, at our home track at Costello on the 16th of May as league leaders.

Full details of the day’s events

Under 20 men – 100 and 200 metres sprints

Our representatives in both the 100 and 200 races were Joe Cooper in the ‘A’ race and Andrew Morgan-Harrison in the ‘B’

Joe had an excellent run in the 100 metres and set a new PB of 11.4s to take 2nd place. Andy was the winner of his race and was in total control, running a season’s best time of 11.6s.

The 200 metres saw another great effort from Joe who set another PB of 22.7s for a 3rd place finish. Andy was the dominant force in his race once again and was the winner in another season’s best time of 22.5s.

Under 20 men – 800 metres

Joshua Taylor-Brown, who was a steeplechase specialist in 2014, is this year concentrating on the 800 metres. He ran a new PB of 2:05.9s for a second place finish in the ‘A’ race. Shaun Smith is concentrating on 800 and 1500 this year and he won his race with ease, setting a new PB of 2:11.1s, 11 seconds ahead of the 2nd placed finisher.

Under 20 men – 1500 metres

Shaun Smith was back in action again in the ‘A’ race, this time having to settle for 3rd place despite running a new PB of 4:15.6s. In The ‘B’ race we saw Harry Powell winning by a huge margin of more than a minute and setting a season’s best time of 4:26.3s.

Under 20 men – 3000 metres

Former distance and steeplechase runner and now a specialist 400 metres hurdler Jack Michaels ran the 3000 metres for us. As always Jack gave us everything he had and took 3rd place with a season’s best of 11:11.8s.

Under 20 men – 400 metres hurdles

Jack Michaels returned to the track to perform in his favoured event and he ran another season’s best time if 65.5s to take 2nd place.

Under 20 men –Discus

One of the great things about the Youth Development League is that it takes athletes out of their comfort zones and gets them trying something new to help their team mates. Harry Powell and Shaun Smith put their hands up to throw the discus for us, both of them set PB’s, Harry with 16.42m for 3rd place in the ‘A’ event and Shaun with 12.17m to win the ‘B’ event.

Under 20 men – Hammer

Jack Michaels and Joshua Taylor-Brown both enjoy having a go at the most technical and difficult of all the field events, the hammer throw. Jack won the ‘A’ event for his team with personal best distance of 17.76m and Josh won the ‘B’ event, again with a new PB of 15.33m.

Dominic won his ‘A’ race in a season’s best time of 11.1s and Matthew won the ‘B’ race where he ran a season’s best time of 11.3s. However as Matt crossed the finish line and started to wind down he had problems with his hamstring and could take no further part in the competition.

Dominic Singh did the sprint double, winning the ‘A’ 200 in a time of 22.6s. This race saw the return to action of Baldvin Magnusson who has been unable to compete for some time. We have missed him and it is great to have him back. He was in 2nd place in the race and ran a season’s best time of 10:20.8s.
