Athlete of the Month – April 2015

Sophie Reed

The winner of our junior training group’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ award for April 2015 was Sophie Reed who competes in the under13 age category.

Sophie is a hard worker who seeks and listens to advice from her coach’s and does her best to put it into practice. The last few months have seen a steady improvement in Sophie’s technique and improved performances in competition.

Her competitive career began in January this year at the Northern Indoor Championships which were held in Sheffield. It was a big event to make her debut at but she took it in her stride. She ran in the heats of the 60 metres sprints where she finished in 5^th place in heat 2 and then took on the long jump and the shot putt events. Sophie was placed 11^th in the shot and 21^st in the long jump. She was competing against the best young athletes in Northern England.

On the 14^th of March Sophie was a member of the successful Kingston team who competed at the EIS Stadium in Sheffield in the ‘Tom Pinks’ relays and field events. The team brought 12 medals home with them to Costello.

At the Kingston upon Hull Open on the 12^th of April she showed us that she had real promise, picking up a silver medal in the javelin competition and a bronze in the long jump, together with a 5^th place finish in the 80 metres sprint.

The 25^th of April saw Sophie in action in Grimsby in the first Humberside League meeting of the season where she won the 200 metres race and finished in 6^th place in the long jump.

There is still a long season ahead of Sophie and hopefully many more successes to come.
