Humberside County Championships
Costello Stadium, Hull – Saturday 23rd May 2015
The 41st annual championship meeting was held at the Costello Stadium on Saturday 23rd of May 2015. Upwards of 250 athletes from clubs in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire and North and North East Lincolnshire assembled in Hull to try and win a county title.
The competition got off to a chilly start, with a biting wind and cloudy skies. The sun came out in the afternoon and temperatures reached a balmy 17 degrees.
The performances of the clubs senior athletes are detailed below.
100 metres – men
Luke Giblin was the county champion and gold medal winner for the 5th consecutive year. He also equalled his own championship record of 10.6s.
Gideon Okoh took the bronze medal with a personal best performance of 11.0s and Callum Giles finished 4th in a season’s best time of 11.2s.
200 metres – men
Luke Giblin later went on to complete the sprint double by taking the200 metres gold in a time of 21.6s.
His club mate Adam Preston, who is in his first season in the senior ranks, finished in 4th place in a season’s best time of 23.7s.
400 metres – men
Adam Preston returned to the track for the 400 metres race where he picked up the bronze medal, running a time of 52.5s.
Long Jump – men
This was a keenly fought competition which saw Kingston athletes take the first 4 places. Sam Dewsbury picked up his first county long jump title with a big new personal best performance of 6.53m.
The silver medal went to Matthew Elvidge with a season’s best effort of 5.88m and the bronze to James Wardle with a jump of 5.80m. Gideon Okoh took 4th place with a season’s best 5.72m.
Shot – Discus – Hammer – men
These three events are the province of one of our veteran athletes, the prolific John Twiddle, who is the reigning British Throws Pentathlon champion, and also the reigning Yorkshire Hammer and Discus champion.
John successfully defended his shot putt title and picked up another gold medal with a throw of 12.33m. The hammer competition yielded a silver medal with a season’s best effort of 41.27m, and he completed a set of medals with a bronze in the discus, with a throw of 32.87m.
Pole vault – men
Reigning champion Liam Holiday made the 4th consecutive defence of his pole vault title with a season’s best clearance of 3.40m.
100 metres – women
Megan Hoult won the 100 metres gold for the 4th consecutive year, running a season’s best of 12.1s to take the title.
Hammer – women
Abbi Carter, who missed the whole of the 2014 season through injury, is back on the scene and it is so good to see her out in the throwing circle again. She won her 6th county hammer championship and set a new championship record of 59.79m to win a richly deserved gold medal. It is officially confirmed ‘Abbi’s back’.
Pole Vault – women
Another athlete who has made a most welcome return to competition this season is Rebekah Arandle, who has also had to endure injury problems. She won the county pole vault title and gold medal with a personal best clearance of 2.80m.
