Northern Athletics Inter County Championships

Witton Park, Blackburn – Saturday 22nd August 2015

 

The annual Northern Athletics County Championship’s, were held this year at Witton Park in Blackburn, the home track of Blackburn Harriers AC.

This competition is for athletes who are in the under 15 and under 17 age categories, and they compete for their athletics County area. All of the young athletes in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire compete for Humberside.

The other teams contesting these championships were Yorkshire, North East Counties, Lancashire (incl. Isle of Man), Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Cumbria.

The Yorkshire team were the winners of the competition with a total of 277 points. Humberside finished in 8th place on 158 points.

 

Twelve members of the team which travelled over to Lancashire were from Kingston upon Hull Athletic Club and details of their performances at the championships are as follows.

 

Under 15 Boys

There was no hammer competition at Blackburn, so the Northern hammer Champion Shaun Kerry, competed in the shot putt, discus and long jump events.

In the Shot he threw a new PB of 11.63m, to take 3rd place. The Discus and Long Jump were events that Shaun is unfamiliar with, but he gave them his best efforts and set new PB’s in both. He threw the discus 22.43m, and in the long jump he recorded a best of 4.51m.

 

Under 17 Men

Joshua Tranmer, the bronze medallist at the recent Northern Championships, saw action in the both the discus and the shot competitions. In the discus he claimed 2nd place with a throw of 39.16m, and in the shot he took 8th place with a throw of 11.20m.

On to the track where Marcel Dalee was seen competing in two middle distance races, the 800 metres and the 400 metres. In the 400 Marcel ran a new PB of 51.40s, to take 5th place, and in the 800 metres, he claimed 3rd place with a good run of 1:59.86s.

In the 3000 metres race Baldvin Magnusson was the team representative and he picked up a 7th place finish, with a recorded time of 9:42.99s.

 

Under 15 Girls

Northern silver medallist Venus Morgan took 2nd place in the 75 metre hurdles race, which she ran in a time of 11.75s. She also ran in the 200 metres race, where she took a 5th place finish, and also set a new PB of 27.10s. Venus was in further action in the shot event, where she put out a throw of 8.63m.

Paige Mathers ran in the 75 metre hurdles ‘B’ race, where she took 4th place and recorded a new PB of 12.46s.

Libby Wheeler took 4th place in the long jump, which is her specialist event, with a jump of 5.07m. She also ran in the 100 metres race where she took 7th place and recorded a time of 13.63s.

Kate Huntington ran in the 100 metres ‘B’ race, where she also collected a 7th place finish, with a run of 14.07s.

Faye Oliver represented the team in the discus competition, where her best throw on the day measured 19.02m.

Kate Huntington, Venus Morgan and Libby Wheeler, were joined in the under 15 girls 4 x 100 metre relay, by Charlotte Cawkwell of Barton & District AC. The girls finished in 7th place and recorded a time 53.15s.

 

 Under 17 Women

 

Amelia Robinson was the winner of the 300 metres  ‘B’ race, where her time for the run, of 40.97s, was a new PB

Chloe Sole was the team representative in the 80 metre hurdles ‘A’ race, where she ran a new PB of 12.87s, to take 6th place.

Sian Kerry ran in the 80 metre hurdles ‘B’, where she finished in 7th place and ran a time of 14.67s. Sian saw further action in the shot putt, where her best throw of the day was one of 7.41m.

Sophie O’Hara competed in both the discus and shot competitions. The discus saw her put in a throw of 32.66m, to take 5th place, and in the shot her best effort of 10.51m, gave her an 8th place finish.
