Five of Kingston’s young athletes made the journey across to Cleckheaton to take part in the annual ‘Ivan Stringer’ Memorial Open meeting. Three of them were members of the clubs junior squad, in Sam Croney, Faye Oliver and Jessica Townsend, and they were joined by Sophie O’Hara and Joshua Tranmer from the youth team.
Faye Oliver is 13 years of age and is in her 3rd competitive season with Kingston. She is a promising young discus thrower and shot putter and was the silver medallist in the shot event at the 2015 Humberside County Championships. She was also selected to represent her County at the 2015 Inter County Championships
At the Cleckheaton meeting Faye competed in the 80 metres sprint race and in the discus throw. She was the winner of the discus event, where she registered a new PB of 23.05m. The 80 metres race saw her take 3rd place with a run of 12.2s.
Jessica Townsend is also 13 years old and she is in her 5th competitive season, she represents Kingston in both track and field and cross country competitions and in recent months has turned her hand to the throwing events. Jess joined her team mate Faye in the discus throw, where she threw a new PB of 15.69m, to give her a 5th place finish in the competition.
Samuel Croney too is 13 years of age, and he is in his 3rd season of competition with the club. He was a County representative in 2014. He was in action in the 100 metres sprint race, the 80 metres hurdles and the long jump.
Sam was the winner of the 100 metres race, where he ran a time of 13.1s. He took 2nd place in the 80 metres hurdles race, which saw him set a new PB of 13.4s, and a distance of 4.27m gave him 3rd place in the long jump competition.
Joshua Tranmer is 15 years old and competes in the under 17 age category, where he specialises in the discus and shot events. He is the reigning Humberside Schools discus champion and was the bronze medallist at the 2015 Northern Championships. Josh has been a County representative in each of the last three seasons.
He competed in the discus competition at Cleckheaton, which he duly won, registering a throw of 34.72m.
Sophie O’Hara also specialises in the discus and shot events, and she competes in the under 17 age category. She is the reigning Humberside County Champion at both discus and shot and is also the current Humberside Schools shot champion. She has earned County selection in each of the last three seasons.Sophie won the discus competition, pulling out her 3rd best throw of the 2015 season, one of 35.53m.
