The annual ‘Saucony’ English National cross country relay Championships were held at Berry Hill Park in Mansfield, on Saturday 31st of October. They have been held at this same venue since 1989.
The age of the competitors ranges from under 13 boys and girls, up to senior men and women. It is a highly competitive event, and this year saw over 1000 teams entered, from every part of England.
Kingston was represented at the championships by the clubs three leading under 20 distance and middle distance runners. All of them were experienced competitors, not only at cross country events but also on the track, and in road races.
Harry Powell is the reigning Humberside under 20 cross country champion and on the track he is the Humberside 3000 metre champion. He was also a county representative at the 2015 Inter Counties cross country championships.
Shaun Smith won the under 17 title at last Januarys Humberside cross country championships. He too won county representation at the 2015 Inter Counties, and on the track, he is the reigning Humberside 1500 metre champion.
Joshua Taylor-Brown also won a county vest at the 2015 Inter Counties, whilst on the track he is both the reigning Humberside County and Humberside Schools 800 metre champion.
All three of them are integral members of the Kingston youth team and they played a big part in the teams successful 2015 league campaign.
At Mansfield they made up the Kingston under 20 men’s at the National Relay Championships.
Harry Powell was the lead runner and he navigated the 3 kilometre course in a time of 9:07.50s, handing over the baton in 26th place.
Shaun Smith took over the baton for the second leg and he completed his race in 9:57.90s, handing over in 40th place.
On the final leg Josh Taylor-Brown took up the baton and fought his way through the field, to cross the finishing line in 25th position, with a time of 9:52.85s.
The team finished in overall 31st place, and registered a team time of 28:58.25s.
