EIS Stadium Sheffield
Saturday and Sunday 13/14 February 2016
The 2016 England Indoor Championships for under15’s, under 17’s and under 20’s were held at the English Institute of Sports Stadium in Sheffield over the weekend of 13th/14th February.
Six of Kingston’s youth team athletes travelled over to Sheffield to take part in the Championship meeting.
England International Charlotte Paterson was an athlete who made the journey with a real chance of getting in amongst the medals. The 17 year old who is the English Schools 100 metres champion, and also holds the Northern 100 title, was in action on Saturday’s opening day of competition.
She was drawn in heat 5 of the under 20’s 100 metres which saw her get off to a winning start and run a new PB of 7.53s.
She progressed to the semi finals where she went in the last of the three races, taking 2nd place and recording a time 7.63s, which qualified her for the final.
The final saw Charlotte break her PB for the second time on the day, setting a new mark of 7.52s, which won her the bronze medal.
On Sunday’s second day of competition 17 year old Hollie Smith, the high jump silver medallist at January’s Northern Championships, also possessed both the talent and ability to get on to the medal rostrum.
Hollie collected the bronze medal at these National Championships with a clearance at a height of 1.76m, which was a new PB.
17 year old Andy Morgan-Harrison has been in a rich vein of form over the last 3 months, which brought him a 60 metres bronze and 200 metres gold medal at January’s Northern Championships, which in turn gained him a representative call up for England at the Welsh International in Cardiff on the 7th of February.
On the Saturday he began his 60 metres campaign in heat 5, he took 3rd place in the race with a run of 7.12s, which equalled his PB, and took him into the semi finals.
Drawn in the first of the semi final races he set a new PB of 7.11s, which was not sufficient to see him into the final.
Sunday saw him start his assault in the 200 metres competition. Drawn in the first heat he took 2nd place with a run of 22.25s which took him into the semi finals.
He was drawn in the first of the semis and took 3rd place with a new PB of 22.05s, just missing out on a spot in the final.
16 year old Brett Dorley is one of Kingston’s up and coming young sprinters who has been with the club for the last eighteen months. He is a regular competitor in the youth team’s league clashes in the National Youth Development League.
He was in action in the under 17’s 60 metres competition, where he ran in the fourth heat and posted a season’s best time of 7.72s.
The under 17 women’s 60 metres brought 16 year old Amelia Benson into the action. She was the 200 metres silver medallist at last year’s County Championships and she also took silvers at both the East Riding Schools and the Humberside Schools Championship meetings.
Amelia went in heat 2 of the under 17’s 60 metres where she ran a good time of 8.10s, but it was not quite enough to get her to the semi finals.
18 year old Jonny Beharrell took another step on his road back to full fitness with a run out in the 800 metres competition. He is a former Humberside Schools 800 metre champion and was the 400 metre bronze medallist at the 2014 Northern Championships.
He was in action in heat 2 of the 800 metres where he took 4th place and ran a time of 1:57.81s.
