Humberside County Track & Field Championships
Costello Stadium, Hull – Saturday 14th May 2016
The annual County Championships meeting was held at the Costello Stadium in Hull on Saturday the 14th of May. More than 260 athletes were in competition on the day and they provided great entertainment for the spectators. There were many outstanding performances on both track and field and numerous athletes pulled out new personal best performances.
The Championships are open to athletes of all ages, starting with 9 year old children and going through all the age groups, up to senior level and into the veteran categories.
Two athletes performances are worthy of special praise. Hammer thrower Olivia Stevenson broke the under 17’s British record, with a throw of 63.40m, to move up the UK rankings to the No. 1 spot. Whilst Shaun Kerry moved up to the joint No. 1 ranking in the UK, in the under 15 shot putt, with a throw of 13.08m.
Further eye catching displays came from Josh Tranmer who set a new Championship best performance in the under 17’s discus throw, which was also a new PB of 45.73m, which took him up to No. 4 in the UK ranking list. Libby Wheeler also set a new Championship best in the under 17’s triple jump, with 10.86m. Sprinter Andy Morgan-Harrison equalled the Championship best times in both the 100 and 200 metres races at under 20. Hammer thrower Maggie Okul threw a new PB of 55.32m in the under 20’s competition, to move up to the No. 3 ranking in the UK.
Details of the performances of all of Kingston upon Hull Athletic Clubs athletes are as follows:-
Under 11 Boys
10 year old Finlay Southcoat and 9 year old Ben Russell have been training with our junior groups since July of last year. The 2016 track & field campaign is the debut season for both boys.
Finlay competed in three races, the 80 metres and 150 metres sprints and the 600 metres. He won all three races, taking the 80 metre gold medal with a new PB of 12.5s. The 150 metres brought a second gold, with a run of 23.9s. Another new PB of 2:00.8s in the 600 metres gave him his third.
Ben Russell was the bronze medallist in the 80 metres race, where he ran a time of 13.1s. In the 600 metres he ran a new PB of 2:10.0s, to claim a 4th place finish.
Under 11 Girls
10 year olds Tilly Cairns and Emma Hoggard and 9 year old Freya Vidal, competed in the heat’s of the 80 metres, where all three girls ran new PB’s and qualified for the final. Emma ran 13.0s for 3rd place in the first heat. Tilly ran 12.3s to win the second heat and Freya took 2nd place with 13.0s.
In the 80 metres final Tilly Cairns was crowned County Champion, with a run of 12.6s. Emma Hoggard fought all the way and collected the silver medal and a second new PB with a fine run of 12.7s. Freya Vidal’s run of 13.2s, saw her take a 5th place finish.
The 150 metres final saw Tilly and Emma do the one, two again. The gold medal went to Tilly Cairns with another new PB of 23.5s, and the silver once again went to Emma, who also ran a new PB of 24.0s.
The 600 metres final saw both girls back in action again. Tilly Cairns collected the silver medal this time, and ran another new PB of 2:06.3s. Emma Hoggard ran a new PB of 2:15.6s, to take a 5th place finish.
Under 13 Boys
Four Kingston athletes were in competition in the 100 metres final which saw Junior Agostinho’s excellent run of 13.7s, a new PB, bring him the gold medal. Adam Fox was the silver medallist and he also ran a new PB of 14.0s. Jack Singleton took the bronze , with a new PB of 14.4s, with Harvey Southcoat 5th in a new PB time of 15.1s.
Five of the clubs athletes lined up for the 200 metres final, where Adam Fox was this time the gold medallist, with a new PB of 28.4s. Junior Agostinho was the silver medallist and ran a new PB of 29.6s. Fabian Vidal took 4th place with a new PB of 31.4s, Harvey Southcoat 5th in a new PB of 31.6s and Thomas Smales finished 7th in a new PB of 31.8.
In the 800 metres final Adam Fox ran a new PB of 2:31.4s, to take 4th place, with Thomas Smales 6th in a new PB of 2:41.0s and Harvey Southcoat 7th in a time of 2:50.6s.
The 75 metres hurdles final brought a Kingston 1-2-3, with Junior Agostinho taking victory, running a time of 15.8s. Jack Singleton was the silver medallist with a new PB of 15.9s and Alex Grant took the bronze in a new PB of 16.8s.
The long jump competition saw Connor Pickering jump a new PB of 4.58m, to take the County title. Fabian Vidal took the silver medal with a new PB of 4.42m and Alex Grant was the bronze medallist with a leap of 3.89m.
Connor Pickering was the gold medallist in the shot putt, with a throw of 8.23m. Fabian Vidal took the silver medal with 7.22m and Alex Chivers finished 4th and threw a new PB of 5.16m.
Alex Grant took 4th place in the high jump competition, with a clearance at a height of 1.10m.
Under 13 girls
Sophie Reed was the gold medallist in the 100 metres final, where she ran a new PB of 14.1s.
In the 800 metres final Esther Savage ran a new PB of 2:56.9s, to take a 7th place finish, with Lauren McClean close behind in 8th place, in a time of 2:57.1s.
Lauren McClean was in further action on the track in the 70 metres hurdles final, where she was crowned County Champion and ran a new PB of 13.0s.
In the shot putt final the Northern indoor Champion Holly Adams won the County title with a new personal best effort of 8.92m, which saw her move up the UK rankings to the number 7 spot. Emilia Russell took 5th place in the competition with a throw of 5.05m.
Sophie Reed returned to action, this time on the field, for the long jump final. She won the bronze medal with a new personal best jump of 3.82m. Charlotte Gray finished in 11th place in the competition with a new PB of 3.23m.
Lauren McClean collected her second gold medal of the day in the high jump final, with a new personal best clearance at 1.35m.
Under 15 Boys
Brody Hinson made his debut appearance at the County Championships in the 100 metres final, where a new personal best run of 12.0s gave him the gold medal. Sam Croney was the silver medallist and he too ran a new PB of 12.5s. Luke Carr took 4th place in the race and also ran a new PB of 13.9s.
The 200 metres final saw Brody Hinson make it a sprint double, winning his second County title and running another new PB of 24.7s. Luke Carr again took a 4th place finish in the race, running a time of 28.4s.
Hurdles specialist and Northern indoor bronze medallist Sam Croney won his first County title, finishing 1.6s ahead of his nearest challenger, in a new PB time of 12.4s.
In the pole vault Ben Stutely won his first County Championships gold medal, clearing a new personal height of 2.30m.
Shaun Kerry had an outstanding day at the Championships. He collected three gold medals in the hammer throw, the shot putt and the javelin throw competitions.
In the hammer final he threw a huge new PB of 53.48m to collect the County title. The throw saw him climb to the No. 2 position in the UK ranking list.
In the javelin his throw of 45.31m, was not only a new PB, but also a new Championship best performance.
His third gold medal came in the shot final, where a massive throw of 13.08m gave him another new PB and also took him to the No. 1 ranking in the UK. Also competing in that final was another Kingston athlete, Antony Mould, who took 4th place and also posted a new PB of 6.97m.
The discus throw brought Ben Copley, another of the clubs outstanding young throwers into the action. The currently ranked UK No. 4 was the gold medallist, with a throw of 33.68m. The winner of the silver medal, with a new personal best throw of 19.53m, was Antony Mould, who was competing at his first County Championship meeting.
The long jump competition saw Henry Cannell take the bronze medal, with a throw of 4.49m.
Luke Carr was the winner of the County triple jump title, with a new personal best effort of 9.67m.
Under 15 Girls
The 100 metres final saw the County title go to Olivia Bradshaw, who put in a new personal best performance of 13.0s. Rose Hewitt took 4th place and ran a new PB of 13.9s, with Evie Watson 6th in a new PB of 14.1s. Alanah Thoresby took 7th place with a new PB of 14.2s and Rosie Shepherd was 8th in a new PB of 14.7s.
In the 200 metres final Evie Watson took 5th place and ran a time of 29.2s. Rose Hewitt was 6th and she set a new PB of 29.5s, with Emily Dye 8th in a new PB of 29.7s.
There were five Kingston athletes in the 800 metres final, where Jodie Martin was the bronze medallist and she ran a new PB of 2:29.8s. Becky Chivers was 4th and she also ran a new PB 2:38.3s. Katy McCabe took 7th place and also ran a new PB of 2:40.7s. A season’s best run of 2:51.0s, saw Niamh Derbyshire finish in 9th and Amelia Hird was 11th with a new PB of 3:23.0s.
The 75 metres hurdles final saw Emily Dye take the silver medal and run a time of 13.8s, with Abbie Haigh taking the bronze in a new personal best time of 13.9s. Katie Smith took 4th place and ran a season’s best time of 14.1s, with Lucy Whittaker 5th in 16.2s and Amelia Hird 6th in 17.7s.
In the field events Indigo Atkin, who has been making good progress in training, was the gold medallist in the hammer throw, with a new PB of 34.06s. Ellie Townsend took the bronze medal in the hammer with a throw of 14.99m.
Indigo Atkin followed up her success in the hammer with a second gold medal, this time in the shot event with a winning throw of 8.99m. Ciara Andrews was the silver medallist with a throw of 8.24m.
The javelin competition saw Becky Chivers win the County title, with a throw of 29.50m. Indigo Atkin won a third medal, this time a silver one, with a throw of 23.64m, with Lucy Whittaker in 4th place with her best effort being a throw of 11.62m.
In the Discus final Faye Oliver took the gold medal with a throw of 22.11m. Jess Townsend’s throw of 19.29m, won her the silver medal, with under 13 athlete Holly Adams, who was throwing out of her age group taking 4th place and setting a new PB of 18.08m.
In the high jump final Rosie Shepherd was the bronze medallist, going clear at a new PB height of 1.40m. Alanah Thoresby took 5th place and she cleared a height of 1.35m.
The club had four athletes in the long jump final, which saw Emily Dye collect her second silver medal of the championships, with a jump of 4.36m. Alanah Thoresby jumped a new PB of 4.03m, to take 5th place, and Evie Watson in 6th with a distance of 3.86m. Lucy Whittaker finished 8th with a jump of 3.24m.
Under 17 Men
Adam Coles and David Morgan-Harrison ran in the 100 metres final, which saw Adam run a new PB of 12.1s to take 5th place in the race. David finished in 6th and ran a time of 12.6s.
David Morgan-Harrison also competed in the 200 metres final, where he ran a new PB of 26.0s, for 4th place.
Adam Coles was the gold medallist in the 100 metres hurdles race, where he ran a time of 15.1s.
Kyle Foster looked impressive in the 800 metres final, where a very good run of 2:04.2s brought both the gold medal and a new PB.
Josh Tranmer recorded a new PB and Championship best performance of 45.73m in the discus final, to take the gold medal and claim the UK No. 4 ranking spot. The silver medallist was Will Robinson who threw a new PB of 31.27m.
Northern Championships silver medallist, Will Robinson, was the winner of the hammer competition, where he threw a new PB of 41.02m.
In the pole vault competition the gold medal went to Harry Stutely, who cleared a new personal best height of 3.60m.
English School’s champion Jack Perry was the gold medallist in the long jump competition, with a leap measuring 5.65m. Adam Coles took the silver medal with his best effort on the day of 5.36m.
Under 17 Women
The 100 metres final saw Kingston athletes winning all three medals. Amelia Benson took the gold medal and ran a time of 12.6s. Cosima Fawcett was the silver medallist and she ran a new PB of 13.5s, with Natasha Rawling taking the bronze in 14.2s.
The 200 metres final saw Amelia Benson run a new PB of 25.6s, to take her second gold medal of the day. Heptathlete Venus Morgan was the silver medallist and she ran a new PB of 27.1s, with Natasha Rawling taking 4th place with a new PB of 29.0s.
Jess Fields was the silver medal winner in the 300 metres race, where she ran a season’s best time of 44.2s.
In the 800 metres Lucy Savery won the County title and ran a new PB of 2:32.6s. The silver medallist was Martha Savage who ran a season’s best time of 2:434.2s.
The 80 metres hurdles race saw Venus Morgan win the gold medal with a run of 12.3s. Paige Mathers ran a new PB of 13.4s, to take the silver medal.
In the 300 metres hurdles Natalie Varga recorded a new PB of 51.1s, to claim the County title, with Lucy Savery collecting the silver medal with a new personal best time of 52.3s.
Natalie Varga collected a second gold medal in the pole vault competition, clearing a new personal best height of 2.50m.
Venus Morgan picked up another gold medal, this time in the high jump, where she cleared a height of 1.50m.
English School’s long jump finalist Libby Wheeler claimed the County title with a leap of 5.12m, in the morning session. In the afternoon she posted a Championship best performance of 10.86m in the triple jump competition to take her second jumps gold medal of the day.
The Hammer throw saw England International and Northern Champion Olivia Stevenson launch the longest throw ever in the under 17’s. Breaking the British record with an enormous 63.40m, which took her to the top of the UK rankings, gave her a Championship best performance and of course a gold medal.
The javelin competition was won by Harriet Cannell, who threw a new PB of 35.92m. The silver medal went to Emily Robinson, who threw 30.49m. Paige Mathers took 5th place with a throw of 26.20m.
Under 20 Men
Andy Morgan-Harrison set Championship best performances in both the 100 metres and 200 metres race’s.
In the 100 metres he took the gold medal in a new personal best time of 10.9s, with Joe Cooper 2nd in a season’s best time of 11.2s and Eliot Gay 3rd with a season’s best time of 11.3s.
A new PB of 22.0s in the 200 metres brought Andy his second gold of the Championship’s and a season’s best run of 22.8s by Joe Cooper gave him his second silver medal of the day.
The 1500 metres race was an all Kingston affair. Josh Taylor-Brown took the gold medal and County title, running a new PB of 4:13.7s, with training partners Jack Brothwell taking the silver medal in a season’s best time of 4:21.3s and Baldvin Magnusson the bronze in 4:24.1s.
Under 20 Women
England International Charlotte Paterson had her first competitive outing since February’s British indoor championships. She ran in the 100 metres race which she won in a season’s best time of 12.1s. The silver medal went to Amy Sampson who ran a time of 12.7s, with Luci Preston winning the bronze in a season’s best time of 12.9s and Olivia Young taking 6th in a time of 13.4s.
The 200 metres race saw Luci Preston winning the County title, in another season’s best time of 26.8s, with Amy Sampson taking the silver medal with a season’s best run of 26.9s.
In the 400 metres Amelia Robinson was crowned County champion and she recorded a new PB of 58.2s.
On to the field events, where in the hammer circle, Maggie Okul made the third successful defence of her title, launching a new PB of 55.32m which puts her at No. 3 in the UK rankings.
In the javelin competition Sian Kerry made it a family double act, winning the gold medal and the County title with a new personal best throw of 29.94m.
Sophie O’Hara made her second successive defence of her discus title, with a throw of 33.28m. Nicole Gray was the silver medallist with a best effort on the day of 27.33m.
Hollie Smith was the gold medallist in the high jump competition, with a clearance at 1.63m.
Senior Men’s Competition
Kingston’s leading male sprinter Luke Giblin has been the County 100 metres champion since 2008. He made his 6th consecutive defence of his title at this year’s meeting, taking the gold medal with a season’s best run of 10.7s. Training partner Callum Giles also ran a season’s best time of 11.0s, to take the silver medal.
The 200 metres brought Luke and Callum back to the track, where they were accompanied by one of Kingston’s (V45) athletes, Rich Harrison.
Luke Giblin won his second County title of the day and ran another season’s best time of 22.0s. Callum Giles was once again the silver medallist, running a time of 22.3s, whilst Rich Harrison’s new PB of 29.2s, gave him 4th place.
The 5000 metres race saw Lee Craven join in the action, and veteran Rich Harrison returned to the track.
Lee Craven was the silver medallist and he posted a new personal best time 20:17.4s, with Rich Harrison taking 4th place and also running a new PB of 20:26.1s.
Late afternoon saw Rich Harrison compete in the 800 metres race, his third track event of the day. The intrepid marathon and road runner ran another new PB of 2:37.5s, to take the County 800 metres title.
Out on the field two of the country’s finest hammer throwers Alex Smith and James Bedford went head to head once again. James was the victor on this occasion, with a season’s best throw of 66.91m, with Alex taking 2nd place with a season’s best throw of 65.45m. John Twiddle the British Masters hammer and shot champion was 5th with a throw of 39.89m.
John Twiddle saw further competition in the shot and discus, winning both of the events. He took the shot title with a throw of 11.83m and the discus with a throw 33.97m.
James Wardle won the County long jump title with a season’s best performance of 5.86m.
Senior Women’s Competition
(V45) athlete Sara Morrow made her County Championships debut in the 3000 metres race, where she ran a new personal best performance of 13:14.1s, for a 4th place finish.
Rebekah Arandle was the gold medallist in the pole vault competition, where she cleared a new personal best height of 2.40m.
International athlete Abbi Carter won her 7th County hammer title at these championships, with a season’s best throw of 57.20m.
