City of York AC Open Meeting

There was a good turnout of Kingston’s junior athletes at the City of York clubs Open meeting at their home track, which is situated at the York University campus at West Heslington.
In the under 11 boys competition 9 year old Ben Russell was the clubs representative. He has been a member of our junior training groups for 12 months and has making good progress, he is a budding sprinter and distance runner and was the 80 metres bronze medallist at this year’s County Championship meeting. He was in action in two events at the York meeting, the 75 metre sprints and in the 600 metres race. In the 75 metre race he ran a time of 12.94s to take 3rd place and in the 600 metres he finished in 7th place with a run of 2:10.43s.
Tonisha Pickering and Tilly Cairns flew the flag for the under 11 girls with Tonisha competing in three events on the day. In the 75metre sprints she ran a season’s best time of 12.72s for a 5th place finish, the long jump saw her take 2nd place with a jump of 3.49m which was a new PB for her, another new PB of 4.54m in the shot event saw her take 5th place. Tilly Cairns decided to forego the sprints at this meeting and instead she competed in the 600 metres race where her run of 2:15.96s saw her finish in 7th place.
Heptathlete Connor Pickering was in good form in the under 13 boy’s competition, the multi eventer contested two of his events. He was the winner of long jump where his best effort was one of 4.08m and he collected a second victory in the shot putt with a throw measuring 7.78m.
In the under 13 girl’s category Lauren McClean and Emilia Russell were in action. Lauren has been performing well this season in the hurdles and high jump disciplines, winning the County titles in both at the 2016 championships. She was the winner of the 70 metre hurdles race at this meeting, crossing the finish line in a time of 13.38s. She took 2nd place in the high jump where she cleared a new PB height of 1.35m. Emilia Russell is both a middle distance runner and a thrower and she was involved on both the track and the field at this meeting. She was in action in the 800 metres race where her run of 2:48.67s saw her take 5th place, further action came in the throwing circle where her effort of 5.26m in the shot event gave her 4th place.
2016 is 13 year old Brody Hinson’s first full competitive track & field season and he has certainly made his mark on the sprint scene, County champion over both 100 and 200 metres together with selection for the Inter County Championship meeting. He ran in the sprints at York where he won the 100 metres in 12.67s, 0.14 seconds ahead of the field and took 2nd place in the 200 metres in 25.22s.
14 year old Kate Huntington is in her third competitive season with Kingston, she is a sprinter who can also run middle distance and turn her hand to long jump and the shot, she was in action in three events at this competition, in the first of the 100 metres race’s she took 3rd place and ran a time of 14.1s, another 3rd place followed in race 1 of the 200 metres where she recorded a time of 28.25s and a season’s best run of 3:10.26s in the 800 metres gave her a 4th place finish.
The County 200 metres bronze medallist Evie Watson went in race 2 of the 100 metres at York, she was the winner of the race and the 13 year olds time of 14.81s was just 3 tenths of a second outside of her PB. Her second event of the day was in the long jump competition where she leaped to a new PB of 4.41m, sixteen centimetres beyond her previous best.
Two further 13 year old Kingston Athletes were in competition in the third of the 100 metres races, where the County hurdles and long jump silver medallist Emily Dye was the race winner with a recorded time of 15.00s. Alanah Thoresby took 2nd place in the race where she posted her best electronic timed run of 15.03s. Both girls were back in action together in the long jump competition where Alanah took 5th place with her leap of 4.22m, whilst Emily’s best jump of 4.13m gave her an 8th place finish.
!3 year old Jess Townsend is in her 5th competitive season with Kingston and for the last couple of seasons her main focus has been in the throwing events. She was the discus silver medallist at this year’s County championship meeting and she was in action at York out in the throwing circle, taking 4th place in the discus event with a throw of 17.03m.
Two of the clubs under 15 male throwers were also on show at this meeting, both contesting the hammer throw. The winner of the event with his throw of 55.05m was Shaun Kerry who has won four hammer titles this year and narrowly missed out on a fifth when he took silver at the National championships. By contrast Antony Mould has been training with the hammer squad for just a few short months and he is making steady progress. Antony took 2nd place behind Shaun with his throw of 23.11m.
Two under 17 girls also travelled to York for this meeting. 15 year old Lucy Savery was in action in the 200 metres race where she ran a season’s best time of 29.49s for a 5th place finish. Paige Mathers competed in two events, the 80 metres hurdles race where she took 2nd place and posted her best electronically recorded time of 14.28s and in the javelin competition she took 4th place with her throw of 20.30m.
