Match 1  –  Herringthorpe Stadium, Rotherham

The Kingston upon Hull AC senior team got their 2017 league campaign up and running at the Herringthorpe Stadium in Rotherham on Saturday the 6th of May they travelled with a strong men’s team but with some gaps in the women’s line up. It was a bitterly cold day with gusting winds and the athletes and spectators huddled in tents and blankets trying to keep warm in a stadium that offers no shelter whatsoever from the elements.

The squad as usual was made up of a mixture of senior athletes and the clubs up and coming youngsters from the youth team and there was a return to league action by outstanding throwers Peter Smith and Anthony Norfolk and sprinter Maegan Taylor was back for her first league match since 2015 plus Hammer Coach Diane Smith stepped out of retirement to answer the call once more.

The opposition was provided by teams representing Bingley Harriers, Rotherham, Lincoln Wellington, Chesterfield and Scunthorpe.

The winners of the match were Rotherham whose total of 400 match points gained them 6 league points, 5 league points went to Lincoln Wellington who amassed a total of 355 match points with Kingston picking up 4 league points in 3rd place, Chesterfield 4th with 3 points Bingley Harriers 5th with 2 points and Scunthorpe in 6th place with 1 point.

The second match will take place on Sunday the 4th of June at Kingston’s home track at the Costello Stadium in Hull.

Track Events

Callum Giles was the ‘A’ runner in the men’s 100 metres sprint race where he took 3rd place in a time of 11.1 sec and Joe Cooper was the winner of the ‘B’ race running a season’s best time of 11.3 sec.

The men’s 200 metres saw Callum Giles this time paired with under 20 athlete Josh Sampson, Callum took 2nd place in the ‘A’ race and ran a season’s best time of 22.5 sec whilst in the ‘B’ Josh Sampson was the winner of the race posting a new PB of 22.6 sec clipping 2 tenths of a second off his old best time.

In the women’s 100 metres ‘A’  race Megan Hoult ran a season’s best time of 12.6 sec to take 2nd place and a season’s best time of 12.9 sec by Maegan Taylor saw her win the ‘B’ race.

The same two athletes went again in the 200 metres where Megan Hoult took 2nd place in the ‘A’ with another season’s best effort of 27.0 sec and Maegan Taylor exploded out of the blocks in the ‘B’ leaving everyone in her wake leading from gun to finish line with another season’s best run of 27.6 sec.

Two under 20 athletes ran in the men’s 400 metres where Jack Brothwell who has run in countless relays ran his first flat 400 taking 5th place in the ‘A’ and establishing a PB of 57.3 sec and Kyle Foster was the winner of the ‘B’ race where he ran a new PB of 53.7 sec taking a full second off his previous best time.

The women’s 400 metres featured two under 20’s Amelia Robinson and Jess Fields, Amelia went in the ‘A’ race where she ran a season’s best time of 58.5 sec for a 2nd place finish and in the ‘B’ Jess Fields took 3rd place running a time of 65.5 sec.

The men’s 800 metres featured Jack Brothwell and Kyle Foster once more, running in the ‘A’ race Jack took 3rd place and clocked a time of 2:03.8 sec whilst Kyle was the winner of the ‘B’ and he ran the race in a time of 2:04.5 sec.

Jess Cappleman ran in both the 800 and 1500 metres ‘A’ races, the 800 metres saw her take 4th place and run a time of 2:32.1 sec and in the 1500 her run of 5:34.1 sec was her season’s best performance and it gave her another 4th place finish.

The men’s 1500 metres saw Oliver Newton take 4th place in the ‘A’ with his season’s best run 4:06.6sec and in the ‘B’ Baldvin Magnusson was the winner of the race and he ran a time of 4:09.9 sec.

The men’s 3000 metres steeplechase featured Gregan Clarkson the two times world biathle champion running in the ‘A’ race and he put on a season’s best performance of 10:48.9 sec to take 2nd place, in the ‘B’ Simon Downs slashed 34.37 sec off his best mark which he had set at a league match in Sheffield in 2016 to take second place and set a new PB of 12:01.2 sec.

Gregan Clarkson was back in action again in the 5000 metres ‘A’ race running another season’s best time of 16:08.0 sec to take 3rd place in the race, the ‘B’ runner was Oliver Newton who was also a 3rd place finisher and he ran a new PB of 17:23.5 sec taking 19.3 sec off his old mark.

The men’s 400 metres hurdles saw 4 time County hurdles champion Dan Holiday running the ‘A’ race where he took 2nd place in a season’s best time of 59.7 sec, in the ‘B’ race Baldvin Magnusson  made his hurdles debut and he was the race winner setting a PB of 71.4 sec.

Matthew Elvidge was the ‘A’ runner in the men’s 110 metre sprint hurdles and he ran a season’s best time of 21.4 sec for 4th place whilst in the ‘B’ Simon Downs was the race winner in his first hurdles race and established a PB of 24.9 sec.

The women’s 100 metres sprint hurdles saw Sonia Santos running a season’s best time of 16.6 sec for a 2nd place finish in the ‘A’ race.

 

Field Events

The field events commenced with the men’s hammer competition where former Commonwealth Youth Champion Pete Smith returned to Northern League action in the ‘A’ throws and reigning British Masters throws champion John Twiddle competed in the ‘B’.

Pete Smith was the winner of the ‘A’ event with a throw of 59.66 metres more than 11 metres ahead of the 2nd placed athlete and in the ‘B’ John Twiddle’s throw of 39.36 metres saw him take 2nd place.

The Women’s hammer saw Olivia Stevenson the England under 17 champion in a tussle with her training partner the England under 18 champion Alice Barnsdale of Lincoln Wellington it was a very competitive match up which saw Olivia winning the event with her throw of 53.03 metres and Alice taking 2nd with a season’s best effort of 52.14 metres. The ‘B’ event saw hammer coach Diane Smith, come out of retirement and step into the breach once again and she threw a season’s best distance of 33.38 metres for 2nd place.

Pete Smith and John Twiddle were in tandem again in the men’s discus in the ‘A’ Pete threw 36.69 metres for a 2nd place finish and John was the winner of the ‘B’ event with a throw of 33.34 metres.

In the women’s discus Olivia Stevenson took 3rd place in the ‘A’ with her throw of 32.56 metres and Diane Smith took 2nd place in the ‘B’ with a season’s best throw of 20.46 metres.

In a hotly contested men’s javelin event Pete Smith’s season’s best throw of 34.41 metres in the ‘A’ gave him a 5th place finish and in the ‘B’ Masters athlete Simon Downs took 2nd place with his throw of 30.51 metres.

The women’s javelin saw sprinter Megan Hoult take 5th place in the ‘A’ with her season’s best throw of 20.61 metres and in the ‘B’ Olivia Stevenson threw a new PB of 18.82 metres to take 4th spot.

The men’s shot competition saw the welcome return to league action of Anthony Norfolk and John Twiddle was back in the fray competing in his 3rd event of the day. Both of the athletes won their event with Anthony in a close contest with the Northern under 20 champion Leo Rowley of Rotherham which saw Anthony’s throw of 12.75 metres beat Leo’s best effort by 13 centimetres. John Twiddle’s season’s best throw of 11.93 metres in the ‘B’ gave him victory and put him more than 2 metres ahead of the other throwers.

The women’s shot saw Olivia Stevenson throw a new PB of 9.53 metres for 2nd place in the ‘A’ a 50 centimetres improvement on her old mark and in the ‘B’ Diane Smith threw a season’s best effort of 6.85 metres to take 3rd place.

The men’s long jump saw Matthew Elvidge take 4th place in the ‘A’ with a leap of 5.64 metres and Pete Smith made his debut in the long jump ‘B’ competition where he established a PB of 4.11 metres for 6th place.

The women’s long jump brought Megan Hoult back on to the field where she produced a season’s best leap of 4.26 metres for 4th place in the ‘A’ and Diane Smith making her debut in the long jump event established a PB of 3.16 metres for 6th place in the ‘B’.

The men’s triple jump saw Matthew Elvidge back in action in the ‘A’ event where he was placed 3rd with his season’s best effort of 11.30 metres.

The women’s triple jump found under 20 sprinter Jessica Fields competing in the ‘A’ event where she took 6th place with 8.79 metres.

The men’s high jump brought together sprinter Josh Sampson in the ‘A’ and multi eventer Daniel Holiday in the ‘B’. Josh Sampson went clear at a new personal best height of 1.65 metres 5 centimetres above his old best for 4th place and Daniel Holiday was 3rd with his clearance at 1.60 metres which was a season’s best performance.

 

RELAY RESULTS

Men’s 4 x 100 metres

The Kingston team of Daniel Holiday, Josh Sampson, Joe Cooper and Callum Giles were the winners of the race and they recorded a time of 43.9 sec and finished 8 tenths of a second ahead of the 2nd placed team

Men’s 4 x 400 metres

The team consisting of Joe Cooper, Kyle Foster, Josh Sampson and Daniel Holiday finished in 2nd place running a time of 3:37.1 sec.

Women’s 4 x 100 metres

The women’s team of Megan Hoult, Jessica Fields, Maegan Taylor and Amelia Robinson were the winners of the race and they ran a time of 51.8 sec.
