The Kingston senior team’s second league match of the 2017 track & field season was held at their home track at the  Costello Stadium in Hull on Sunday the 4th of June the team had clinched 2nd  place in their season opener at Rotherham on the 6th of May and they were looking to maintain their solid start to the season. The team as always consisted of senior athletes supplemented by the clubs outstanding young prospects from the youth team.

The opposing teams were once again Lincoln Wellington, Rotherham Harriers, Chesterfield,   Bingley Harriers and Scunthorpe AC.

It was a mighty tussle between Kingston, Lincoln and Rotherham for the top three positions and there were some great contests for supremacy both on the track and in the field as well as some outstanding individual performances.

Kingston were the winners of the contest collecting a total of 430 match points and 6 league points to move to the top of the table.

The performance details of all the Kingston athletes on the day are as follows.

 

 

TRACK EVENTS

 

The men’s 100 metres and 200 metres featured Joe Cooper in the ‘A’ race’s where he took 3rd place in the 100 running a time of 11.42 sec and 4th place in the 200 metres in 22.89 sec. The ’B’ runner in both sprints was Josh Sampson who won both of the races running 11.62 sec in the 100 and he completed the sprint double with a run of 23.65 sec in the 200.

In the women’s sprints Hannah Kynman took 2nd place in the 100 metres ‘A’ race where she posted a time of 12.66 sec and the ‘B’ race saw Maegan Taylor take victory with her run of 13.56 sec.

In the 200 metres ‘A’ race Maegan Taylor took 3rd place in a recorded time of 28.31 sec and Amy Sampson was the winner of the 200 metres ‘B’ where she ran a time of 28.59 sec. Amy also competed in the non scorer’s 100 metres race which she won running a time of 13.80 sec.

Former Great Britain international Lawrence Baird took 2nd place in the men’s 400 metres ‘A’ race covering the distance in a time of 50.97 sec. whilst in the 400 metres ‘B’ race Kyle Foster notched up a victory for the team with his run of 53.84 sec.

The men’s 800 metres saw Baldvin Magnusson run a new PB of 2:00.17 sec shaving two hundredths of a second off his old best time in the ‘A’ race for a 2nd place finish whilst Kyle Foster took 3rd place in the ‘B’ with his run of 2:03.99 sec.

In the women’s 800 metres Jess Cappleman ran a season’s best time of 2:28.71 sec to take 3rd place in the ‘A’ race and Martha Savage ran a season’s best time of 2:35.00 sec to take 2nd place in the ‘B’ race.

The men’s 1500 metres saw Oliver Newton taking 2nd place in the ‘A’ race where he ran a time of 4:05.35 sec. Baldvin Magnusson saw further action in the 1500 metres ‘B’ where he took 2nd place and recorded a time of 4:09.50 sec.

In the women’s 1500 metres Martha Savage returned to the track in the ‘A’ race where she put together a great run taking 4.6 seconds off her previous best time claiming 4th place and setting a new PB of 5:28.10 sec. and in the 1500 metres ‘B’ race Jess Cappleman finished in 2nd place running another seasons best time of 5:28.39 sec.

In the men’s 3000 metre steeplechase Gregan Clarkson ran a season’s best time of 10:41.01 sec to take 2nd place in the ‘A’ race and Simon Downs knocked 21.39 seconds off the PB he had set at the previous days Humber track league meeting to take 3rd place in the ‘B’ and set a new PB of 11:19.01 sec.

The women’s 3000 metres saw Sarah Gibson running in the ‘A’ race and taking 4th place with a time of 13:09.98 sec and it was a track & field debut for Rachel Johnson in the ‘B’ race where she took 3rd place and ran a PB of 13:14.56 sec.

The men’s 5000 metres saw Gregan Clarkson take 3rd place in the ‘A’ and he covered the 12 and a half laps in 16:41.67 sec and in the ‘B’ race Lee Craven ran a new PB of 19:35.45 sec to finish in 6th place taking 41.95 seconds off his previous best time.

The men’s 400 metres hurdles saw Dan Holiday run a season’s best time of 56.68 sec in the ‘A’ race for a 2nd place finish and Baldvin Magnusson ran in the ‘B’ race where he took 2nd place running a new PB of 70.44 sec clipping 0.96 of a second off his previous best mark.

The women’s 400 metres hurdles saw Natalie Varga having her first competitive run over the higher hurdles having moved up this year from the 300 metres hurdles event and she was the winner of the race setting herself a PB of 70.24 sec.

In the men’s 110 metres hurdles Matt Elvidge took 2nd place in the ‘A’ where he clocked a time of 21.89 sec whilst in the ‘B’ Simon Downs ran a new PB of 24.33 sec for 2nd place.

The Kingston athlete in the women’s 100 metres hurdles was Sonia Santos who ran a season’s best time of 16.08 sec to take 2nd place in the race.

 

FIELD EVENTS

 

The men’s hammer competition saw a double victory for the team with Pete Smith winning the ‘A’ with a throw of 58.89 metres And John Twiddle winning the ‘B’ event with his effort of 38.74 metres. The same two athletes were in action in the shot and discus events which saw Pete Smith winning the discus ‘A’ with a throw of 37.72 metres and John Twiddle winning the ‘B’ with 33.36 metres. The shot putt saw John take 2nd place in the ‘A’ with 10.99 metres and Pete was the winner of the ‘B’ with a season’s best throw of 9.68 metres.

The women’s hammer competition saw ‘Hull Hammer Squad’ members and training partners Ollie Stevenson and Alice Barnsdale going head to head in the ‘A’ throw the honours went to Ollie whose throw of 53.25 metres was enough to win the event and Alice took 2nd place for the Lincoln Wellington club with her throw of 52.91 metres.

The women’s discus saw Sophie O’Hara take 3rd place in the ‘A’ with her throw of 36.76 metres whilst Ollie Stevenson was the winner of the ‘B’ with her season’s best effort of 33.52 metres. Sophie O’Hara was back in action in the shot competition where she took 2nd place in the ‘A’ with her throw of 9.59 metres and Maggie Okul took 2nd place in the ‘B’ with her season’s best throw of 8.54 metres.

In the men’s javelin Pete Smith took 5th place in the ‘A’ with a season’s best throw of 36.23 metres and Simon Downs was the 3rd place finisher in the ‘B’ with 34.26 metres. The women’s javelin competition saw Maggie Okul take 4th place in the ‘A’ with a throw of 27.91 metres and Sian Kerry took 3rd place in the ‘B’ with a distance of 27.32 metres.

 

The men’s long jump competition brought another Kingston double victory with Matt Elvidge winning the ‘A’ with a jump of 6.24 metres and James Wardle winning the ‘B’ with his season’s best effort of 5.85 metres. The duo teamed up again in the triple jump event where James jumped a season’s best of 11.82 metres for 3rd place in the ‘A’ and Matt won the ‘B’ with his jump of 10.75 metres.

The women’s long jump saw Kingston celebrate another double victory with Libby Wheeler jumping to the UK No. 12 ranking with a new PB of 5.60 metres 12 centimetres beyond her previous mark in the ‘A’ and Northern indoor combined events champion Venus Morgan added 9 centimetres to her best with a new PB of 5.42 metres to win the ‘B’.

The triple jump saw another double victory with the Northern indoor champion and England indoor bronze medallist the UK ranked No. 5 Libby Wheeler winning the ‘A’ event with her jump of 11.05 metres whilst in the ‘B’ Abbie Haigh making her debut for the senior team jumped a new PB of 9.46 metres 27 centimetres past her old mark which she had set just 7 days previously in a Youth Development League match with the youth team up in Darlington.

The men’s high jump saw Tom Horner contesting the ‘A’ where he took 3rd place with a clearance at a season’s best height of 1.80 metres and Dan Holiday also took 3rd place in the ‘B’ with his clearance at 1.55 metres.

Venus Morgan saw further action in the high jump competition where she cleared a height of 1.50 metres in the ‘A’ event to take 4th place.

Matt Elvidge also competed in the pole vault event where he took 3rd place in the ‘A’ event with a clearance at a season’s best height of 2.10 metres.

 

RELAYS

Men’s 4 x 100 metres

 

The Kingston team of Joe Cooper, Lawrence Baird, Josh Sampson and Dan Holiday were the winners of the race and they ran a time of 44.75 sec.

 

Women’s 4 x 100 metres

The quartet of Amy Sampson, Olivia Stevenson, Sonia Santos and Maegan Taylor took 2nd place and recorded a time of 52.86 sec.

 

Men’s 4 x 400 metres

Kyle Foster, Joe Cooper, Dan Holiday and Lawrence Baird made up the Kingston team who were the race winners and they posted a time of 3:30.63 sec.

 

Women’s 4 x 400 metres

The women’s team were Natalie Varga, Amy Sampson, Martha Savage and Jess Cappleman who finished in 4th place and ran the 4 lap race in 4:45.66 sec.
