Division Northern Premier East (North) – Relegation Play Off Match

Middlesbrough Sports Village – Sunday 23^rd July 2017

The Kingston Youth team’s final league match of the 2017 track & field season was staged at the Middlesbrough Sports Village on a hot and sunny summers day. This year had seen four immensely strong composite teams from Scotland competing in the Northern England Premier Leagues East (North) and East (South). After the first three rounds of matches the top 3 in both leagues went to a promotion match at Sheffield and the bottom 3 to a relegation match at Middlesbrough.

The relegation match saw Kingston taking on Middlesbrough Mandale, Gateshead Harriers, Sheffield and Dearne and Doncaster AC, the 6^th club Hallamshire Harriers did not send a team and were therefore relegated. All of the teams were under strength due to the triple whammy of GCSE’s, A Levels and the holiday season but the standard of competition was very high and there were immense performances from every member of the Kingston squad who are a closely knit group and a team in every sense of the word, they battled all day and ensured that they kept their place in the premier league for the 2018 track & field season.

Details of the performances of every Kingston athlete at Middlesbrough are as follows.

Under 17’s

The men’s 100 metres sprint races saw the County champion Jack Perry take 4^th place in the ‘A’ race where he ran a time of 12.1 sec and the County bronze medallist Nathan Cuthbert’s run of 12.2 sec in the ‘B’ saw him emerge as the race winner. The 200 metres race saw Nathan Cuthbert running the ‘A’ race where he was 4^th place finisher and ran a time of 25.3 sec. The women’s competition featured Hannah Kynman running the ‘A’ race in both the 100 and the 200 metres, the County and County Schools champion and English Schools semi finalist won both of the races where she dominated the opposition finishing 4 tenths of a second ahead of the 2^nd place finisher in the 100 where she ran 12.9 sec and 6 tenths ahead of the runner up in the 200 where she clocked 26.2 sec. County silver medallist Becky Chivers was in action in the women’s 300 metres ‘A’ race where her run of 46.8 sec gave her a 4^th place finish.

English School’s finalist and the County and County schools champion Adam Coles was the winner of the 100 metres hurdles ‘A’ race where he ran a time of 14.3 sec. The women’s 80 metres hurdles ‘A’ race saw County champion and Northern indoor 60 metres bronze medallist Venus Morgan winning the ‘A’ race and running a time of 12.0 sec whilst in the ‘B’ the County and County schools bronze medallist Paige Mathers took 3^rd place with her run of 13.1 sec.

The women’s 300 metres hurdles saw Lucy Savery the County Schools champion take 3^rd place in the ‘A’ race with her run of52.9 sec.

The men’s high jump competition saw Philip May taking 4^th place in the ‘A’ event with a clearance at a new PB height of 1.55 metres 15 centimetres above his previous best. In the women’s high jump the Northern combined events champion Venus Morgan took 3^rd place in the ‘A’ with a clearance at 1.50 metres and the County Schools champion Abbie Haigh was the winner of the ‘B’ clearing a height of 1.35 metres.

County silver medallist Adam Coles took 2^nd place in the men’s long jump ‘A’ with his best jump of the day which measured 6.03 metres and the County champion Jack Perry was the winner of the ‘B’ with his leap of 5.90 metres. The women’s event featured England indoor bronze medallist Libby Wheeler in the ‘A’ where she was the competition winner with her leap of 5.48 metres and in the ‘B’ county representative Abbie Haigh made it a double victory for the team with her jump of 4.24 metres.

The men’s triple jump was a high quality competition with Adam Coles in the ‘A’ and Philip May in the ‘B’ putting on a superb jumping display, both of them put in big personal best performances with Adam breaking his PB twice to take victory with an effort of 12.14 metres a 55 centimetre increase on his old mark and Philip putting another 44 centimetres on his old best to take victory in the ‘B’ with his new PB of 11.56 metres. The women’s competition re-united Libby Wheeler and Abbie Haigh and the girls were not to be outdone they too made it a team double victory with Libby winning the ‘A’ with her jump of 11.17 metres and Abbie taking victory in the ‘B’ with her effort of 9.44 metres.

The shot competition found Shaun Kerry in the throwing circle and the Yorkshire ranked number 3’s new PB throw of 12.65 metres secured him the victory and added another 13 centimetres to his old best mark and in the women’s event Venus Morgan’s throw of 11.10 metres secured another double victory for the team.

Shaun Kerry was in further action in the men’s javelin event and the Yorkshire ranked No. 5 was the winner of the ‘A’ where he added a further 27 centimetres to his best to set a new PB of 42.37 metres and the County silver medallist Nathan Cuthbert secured another team double winning the ‘B’ with his throw of 36.58 metres. In the women’s event Northern champion Becky Chivers was the winner of the ‘A’ where she threw a new PB of 36.69 metres adding 1.96 metres to her old best mark and in the ‘B’ Paige Mathers threw a season’s best distance of 30.17 metres to win the event and notch up yet another double victory for the team.

In the men’s hammer throw the English Schools bronze medallist and UK ranked number 4 Shaun Kerry was the winner of the ‘A’ competition with his throw of 59.76 metres.

Under 20’s

The Northern 100 metres champion Andrew Morgan-Harrison was the only under 20 sprinter available for this match and he travelled up to Middlesbrough where he was down to run in the 100 and 200 metres races. He got off to a flying start in the 100 and left the rest of the field in his wake he was the race winner and ran a time of 11.1 sec but in the last few strides he felt his hamstring which has troubled him on several occasions this year, unfortunately this race was the only action of the day for him. The women’s 100 and 200 sprints featured Amy Sampson who has been a real stalwart for both the youth and senior team this year and has produced some very good performances and Gabrielle Whittle who only returned to action in July after 14 months on the sidelines has also put in some quality performances for the youth and senior teams. In the 100 metres Amy Sampson took a 3^rd place finish in the ‘A’ race where she ran a time of 13.4 sec and in the ‘B’ race Gabrielle’s run of 13.5 sec saw her also taking a 3^rd place finish. In the 200 metres Amy Sampson took 2^nd place in the ‘A’ race where she ran a time of 28.3 sec and Gabrielle Whittle was the winner of the ‘B’ where she clocked a time of 27.3 sec.

In the men’s 800 metres ‘A’ race County Schools champion Kyle Foster went under the two minutes barrier for the first time and he ran a new PB of 1:59.3 sec taking 2.4 seconds off his previous best for a 3^rd place finish in the race. In the women’s 400 metres hurdles ‘A’ race Natalie Varga continued her run of fine form in the league competitions where she was the race winner and posted a time of 72.0 sec.

The men’s discus saw the County and County Schools champion Joshua Tranmer in complete control in the ‘A’ winning the event with ease with his throw of 40.23 metres. In the women’s discus ‘A’ Olivia Stevenson took 2^nd place in the event with her throw of 27.21 metres and County silver medallist Joshua Tranmer was the winner of the men’s shot competition throwing a distance of 13.25 metres in the ‘A’. The women’s shot ‘A’ event saw Olivia Stevenson taking 3^rd place with her throw of 8.46 metres and in the ‘B’ Sian Kerry threw a season’s best effort of 7.19 metres for a 3^rd place finish. Philip May saw further action in the men’s long jump ‘A’ where he competed out of his age range in the under 20 competition and his leap of 5.29 metres earned him a 5^th place finish.

The women’s hammer competition saw Olivia Stevenson in action in her main event she has had another fantastic year winning bronze medals at both the National and the English Schools championships as well as gold medals at the Northern championships and the County and County Schools events, she was the winner of the hammer ‘A’ where she threw a distance of 50.34 metres and Sian Kerry took 2^nd place in the hammer ‘B’ with her season’s best throw of 17.49 metres.

Relays

Under 17 Men – 4 x 100 metres

The men’s team of Jack Perry, Adam Coles, Philip May and Nathan Cuthbert ran a season’s best time of 46.2 sec to take 2^nd place.

Under 17 Women – 4 x 100 metres

The women’s foursome of Becky Chivers, Abbie Haigh, Paige Mathers and Hannah Kynman finished in 2^nd place and they ran a time of 54.3 sec.
