Northern Athletics Indoor Open Meeting – 2
EIS Stadium, Sheffield – Saturday 2nd December 2017
Fourteen Kingston athletes were in competition at the second of this year’s Northern Athletics indoor open meetings which was held at the English Institute of Sports stadium In Sheffield on Saturday the 2nd of December.
Andrew Morgan-Harrison had his second run out of the new indoor season in the senior men’s 60 metre sprint race where he was seeded in race one of the 60 metres series. 2017 has been another successful season for Andrew who is the reigning Northern track & field 100 metres champion and he was the winner of the 100 metres at this year’s Welsh Athletics International meeting in Cardiff. He went under 7 seconds at the Sheffield meeting where he took 2nd place and his run of 6.97 sec was just one hundredth of a second outside his personal best.
David Morgan-Harrison had his first competitive run as an under 20 athlete, having just moved up from the under 17’s and he was seeded in race 8 of the senior men’s 60 metres competition. He is the reigning County 200 metres champion and was the silver medallist over the 100 metres distance. David was the winner of his race and his run 7.60 sec saw him like his older brother finish one hundredth of a second outside his PB.
Another athlete new to the under 20’s was 400 metre specialist Robert Tweedale who opted to run in his first race over the 600 metres distance. He is the 2016 and 2017 County champion and County Schools champion over the one lap race. His first outing over the one and a half lap distance saw him taking 6th place and he established a new personal best performance of 1:26.58 sec.
Adam Coles is another first year under 20 and the three time County hurdles champion had his first race over the higher hurdles in a strong and very competitive field, the English Schools finalist took a 5th place finish and covered the 60 metres in a time of 8.95 sec to establish a personal best performance. He was in further action in senior men’s long jump competition where the field of 32 competitors were split into two groups with Adam seeded into the ‘A’ group, where he secured a 6th place finish with a leap of 6.01 metres.
In the under 17’s Sam Croney was back in competition for the first time since Augusts Northern track & field championships in Leigh where he brought home a bronze medal with an excellent performance in the 100 metres hurdles final. He went in the 60 metre hurdles race at Sheffield taking 2nd place and running a time of 9.18 sec to set a new PB.
In the women’s competition new under 20 athlete Venus Morgan was in action in two events, the senior women’s 60 metres hurdles and the High jump. The outstanding hepthathlete has enjoyed an excellent year in 2017 finishing 6th at the England championships and winning the Northern championships, as well as taking 8th place at the English Schools championships and 2nd place at the North East Schools championships. She is currently ranked number 2 in Yorkshire and number 9 UK. At Sheffield she took 2nd place in the senior women’s 60 metres hurdles race where she set a new PB of 9.27 sec. The senior women’s high jump saw her seeded in the ‘A’ group where she cleared a height of 1.48 metres for a 10th place finish.
In her first competition in the under 17 women’s age group was pentathlete Alanah Thoresby who has been making good progress throughout 2017, she won her first major medal a high jump silver at the Northern track & field championships and took 6th place in the high jump at the National championships and in addition, she secured a 6th place finish in her first pentathlon at the North East Schools combined events championships. This meeting saw her seeded in race 21 of the women’s 60 metres where she took 2nd place and ran a new PB of 8.53 sec clipping 0.21 of a second of her previous best time. Further action came in the long jump where she took a 4th place finish with her leap of 4.59 metres.
Evie Watson made her Kingston debut at the 2014 Northern indoor championship meeting she is a good all round athlete and has been a valued member of the Kingston junior team for the last three years. This meeting marked her debut in under 17’s competition where she was in action in race 21 of the women’s 60 metres and also in the senior women’s long jump where she was seeded in the ‘A’ group. The 60 metres saw Evie taking a 7th place finish and running a time of 8.93 sec whilst in the long jump the 2015 County champion finished in 5th place with her jump of 4.46 metres.
Rosie Shepherd was also making her bow as an under 17 athlete and she opted to compete in the high jump, an event where she has amassed two County championship bronze medals and a County Schools silver and she also ran in her first 600 metres race. 2017 saw Rosie compete in her first combined events meeting at the North East Counties championships in Jarrow where she completed her first pentathlon. At Sheffield she was a 7th place finisher in the 600 metres race where she established a new PB of 1:54.23 sec and took another 7th place in the high jump where she cleared a height of 1.43 metres.
Daisy Logan is in her first year with the club and she has certainly made an impression in the under 15’s competition. At May’s County championships she won the 100 metres gold and she was a 200 metres finalist at the Northern championships and she also won two County vests. She took on her first 60 metres and 150 metres races at Sheffield. She was drawn in race 4 of the 60 metres where she was a 5th place finisher and established a personal best time of 8.33, sec another 5th place was taken in the 150 metres and another PB of 19.89 sec for the distance.
Another under 15 Libby Hakney made her club debut at this April’s Kingston Spring Open meeting and in June she made her debut appearance with the Kingston junior team running in the 75 metre and 150 metre sprint races. At Sheffield she was drawn to run in race ten of the 60 metre series where she was the race winner and ran a new PB of 9.03 sec shaving one hundredth of a second off the time she had set in November at the first Northern Athletics Open.
Emilia Russell is in her third year with Kingston and she is another good all round athlete who is at home in all the runs jumps and throws, she is a County representative and gave good service to the junior team in the UK Youth Development League matches. This meeting saw her take on two jumps and a throw, she was the winner of the long jump event leaping to a new PB of 4.21 metres which added another 10centimetres to her old best mark. The high jump saw her take a 6th place finish with a clearance at a height of 1.38 metres and another new PB of 7.32 metres in the shot event saw her add 1.12 metres to her previous best for a 6th place finish.
Holly Adams made her Kingston debut in February of 2015 at the Northern indoor championships and the following year she won silver medals at the Northern track & field championships in shot and discus. 2017 saw her smash the shot putt record at the ‘Tom Pinks’ relays and field events in Sheffield, the County championships saw her win three titles in shot, discus and javelin and on her debut at the English Schools championships she competed in the discus final. Holly was in action in the shot event at this meeting where her throw of 10.90 metres gave her another victory.
Jack Singleton represented the under 15 boy’s at this competition, he is in his second competitive year with the club and won 100 metre bronze and 75 metre hurdles silver at the 2016 County championships, he is a County representative and is a member of the Kingston junior team. He was in action in the sprint races at this meeting, drawn in race 2 of the 60 metres he was an 8th place finisher and ran a time of 8.40 sec. He was the winner of the 150 metres race which was the first time he had run the distance indoors and he established a new PB of 20.04 sec.
