‘2017 Kingston Awards’
Annual Awards and Presentation Night
Kingston’s annual awards and presentation night was held at Brantingham Park, the home of Hull Ionians Rugby Union Club. This was the first time Kingston had held their annual event at this venue and the hospitality and facilities were very impressive.
Awards are presented in every age group from 9 year olds in the junior training group’s right up to the clubs senior and international athletes. The award categories are sprints, hurdles, middle distance, distance and road, cross country, throwing events, jumping events and combined events. Selection criteria is based on an athlete’s individual performances during both the indoor and track & field season’s as well as performances in competition for the club in league matches in the UK Youth Development League and in the North of England track & field league.
In addition awards are also presented to the athletes who have put in the most outstanding performances at this year’s major championship meetings both Track & Field and Indoors. The winners of the major awards are as follows.
Best Performance at the National Championships
The male award went to Ben Copley for his outstanding performance at the England Championships where he was the gold medal winner in both the javelin and discus throws. The female award went to Olivia Stevenson who was the hammer bronze medallist at the England Championships.
Best Performance at the Northern Track & Field Championships
Ben Copley collected his second major award winning three medals at the Northern’s. He took the gold medals in the javelin and discus throws and was the silver medallist in the shot putt. Libby Wheeler received the female award for her gold medal winning performance in the triple jump final.
Best Performance Indoors – National and/or Northern Championships
Libby Wheeler picked up her second major award of the evening for her gold medal winning effort in the triple jump final at the Northern’s and also for the bronze medal she won in the triple jump at the England championships. The male award went to Andrew Morgan-Harrison won the 200 metre silver medal and 60 metre bronze at the Northern indoors and was the 4th place finisher in the 200 metres final at the England championships.
Recognition of First International Vest
Baldvin Magnusson won his first international vest in November 2017 when he was selected to represent Iceland at the annual Nordic cross country championships in Denmark. He ran in the 6 kilometre under 20’s race crossing the finish line in 5th place and was place 6th overall. The competing countries were Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and the Faroe Islands.
Details of all the award winners on the evening are as follows.
Under – 20 Sprints
The men’s award winner Andrew Morgan Harrison had another outstanding year. He won the 100 metres gold medal at the Northern track & field championships and he was selected for the Northern England team which competed at the Welsh International in Cardiff, where he won the 100 metres gold medal. The women’s award winner was Amy Sampson who has been a stalwart performer in both the youth team and the senior team throughout both the 2016 and 2017 track & field seasons. She always gives 100 % effort in everything she does and turns out for every league match she can possibly get too.
Under 20 – Hurdles
Natalie Varga was the winner of the women’s award. The former pole vaulter is now concentrating on the 400 metre hurdles and 400 flat races. She competed for both the youth team and senior team in their league matches in The UK YDL League and North of England track and field leagues.
Under 20 – Middle Distance
The men’s winner was Baldvin Magnusson who won the 1500 metre titles at both the County and County Schools championships and finished 4th in the 1500 metre final at the Northern Championships. In addition he was in action in league competitions for both the senior team and the youth team. The women’s winner was Martha Savage who also was a member of both teams and like Baldvin gave great service to the club.
Under 20 – Distance and Road
Harry Powell won the men’s award for fine performances at two grand prix meetings at Stretford both over 3000 kilometres, finishing in the top ten in both. He also was a 4th place finisher in a field of 193 runners in the Doncaster town centre race, run over a distance of 5000 metres.
Under 20 – Cross Country
This category saw Harry Powell pick up his second award of the evening for several outstanding performances which included a 3rd consecutive County title, 5th place at the Northern championships and 13th at the England championships plus 3rd place at the British University meeting and he represented Northern England in the Home Countries international meeting in Wales.
Under 20 – Throws
Discus thrower Joshua Tranmer took the men’s award, this year he won the gold medal at the England championships, retained both his County and County schools discus titles and was 4th at the Northern championships and a finalist at the English Schools event. The women’s award went to Olivia Stevenson after another successful year where she won bronze medals at both the England championships and the English schools championships.
Under 17 – Spints
David Morgan-Harrison won the men’s award. The track & field season brought him a sprint double at the County championships and two silver medals in the 100 and 200 metres at the County Schools event. The women’s award went to Hannah Kynman who won both the 100 and 200 metre titles at the County event and the 100 metre gold at the County schools meeting.
Under 17 – Hurdles
Heptathlete Venus Morgan was the winner of the women’s award. She won the bronze medal over the 60 metre hurdles at the Northern indoor championships and took the silver medal at the Northern track & field event over the 80 metre hurdles. She won County titles over both the 80 metres and 300 metres hurdles. Adam Coles took the men’s award, the highlights of his year were his 60 metre hurdles bronze medal at the Northern indoor championships which he bettered at the Northern track & field event taking the gold medal in the 100 metre hurdles, two further hurdles gold’s were taken at the County and the County schools meetings and he was a finalist at the English schools championships.
Under 17 – Middle Distance
The winner of the men’s award was Joseph Seed who competed for the youth team in the 400 and 800 metres races in the YDL league matches and the 2017 County 200 metre champion also ran for the team in the sprint relays. Venus Morgan was the women’s winner, the 800 metres is one of the seven events which make up the heptathlon and she runs the distance regularly both in open meetings and in training sessions. She is the numer 1 ranked athlete at the club.
Under 17 – Throws
Shaun Kerry took the men’s award. He is the No. 4 ranked hammer thrower in the UK and is also a very good javelin thrower and shot putter. In the hammer he is the reigning Northern champion and was the silver medallist at the 2017 UK School games and bronze medallist at the English schools event. He won the hammer, shot and javelin gold’s at this year’s County championships. The women’s award went to javelin specialist Harriet Cannell who was this year’s Northern track & field silver medallist and also County and County schools javelin champion and a finalist at English Schools.
Under 17 – Jumps
Jack Perry was the men’s winner he was the Northern long jump silver medallist at the 2017 championships and he took both the County and County Schools long jump and 100 metre titles. The women’s award went to Libby Wheeler who has had a magnificent year. In addition to her major medals she won triple jump and long jump gold’s at both the County and County Schools events and she finished off the year with the triple jump bronze medal at the 2017 UK School Games.
Under 17 – Combined Events
Venus Morgan collected a third award, this time in the combined events category. 2017 has seen her win the Northern indoor heptathlon title and finish 6th in the England indoor event. She was the silver medallist at the North East schools heptathlon and was 6th at the national championships and 8th at the English Schools heptathlon event.
Under 15 – Sprints
The boy’s winner was Brody Hinson who was the 200 metres silver medallist at both the Northern indoor championships and the Northern track & field Championships and was a 200 metres finalist at the English Schools championships. Daisy Logan won the girl’s award, she is in her debut year and has made an excellent start to her career winning the gold medal in the 100 metre final at the County Championships and earning selection for the junior team.
Under 15 – Hurdles
Jack Singleton won the boy’s award he competed for the junior team in two of their UK Youth Development league fixtures. The girl’s award went to Lauren McClean who also competed in two YDL matches and was the 75 metre hurdles bronze medallist at this year’s County Championships.
Under 15 – Middle Distance
The girl’s award went to Jodie Martin who was the 800 metre silver medallist at the County schools championships and was an 800 metre finalist at the Northern track and field championships and also ran the 300 and 800 metre races for the junior team. The boy’s award winner was Harry Hudson who is in his debut year with the club. He was the 800 metre gold medallist at the Independent schools championships and ran both the 300 metre and 800 metre races for the junior team.
Under 15 – Distance and Road
Adam Fox was the winner of this category, he competed in the Northern Counties road relay championships where he put in a huge performance and he was an ever present in the junior team throughout the 2017 campaign.
Under 15 – Cross Country
The boy’s award went to Harvey Roberts who was a 7th place finisher at the County championships and took 5th place at The County schools event, he also ran in the British inter counties championships and the English schools championships and also gave excellent service to the junior team. Jodie Martin picked up her second award of the night, she had an outstanding cross country season which saw her winning the County schools title and taking the silver medal at the County championships. Other outstanding performances came at the British inter County championships where she finished inside the top 40% and at the English Schools event she was just outside the top 25%.
Under 15 – Throws
Another stand out season saw Holly Adams win the girl’s award, she won the shot silver medal at the Northern indoor championships and at the annual ‘Tom Pink’ indoor relays and field events she smashed the shot record which had stood since 2009. The County schools championships saw her take the gold medals in shot, discus and javelin, also on her debut at the English schools event she competed in the discus final. The boy’s award went to Ben Copley, who in addition to his major championship successes was the winner of the discus gold medal at the English schools championships and also won the Loughborough javelin carnival and took the shot, discus and javelin titles at both the County and County Schools championships
Under 15 – Jumps
Alanah Thoresby enjoyed the most successful season of her young career. Starting with the Northern indoors where she was a high jump finalist, next up she made the final of the England indoor championships. The County championships brought her two silver medals in high jump and long jump and a high jump gold medal was won at the county schools championships. The Northern track & field championships saw her take the silver medal in the high jump and she was also a high jump finalist at the England championships. The Boy’s award was won by Connor Pickering who competed in the long jump final and the shot final at the Northern indoor championships. He covered the jumps and throws for the junior team in their league campaign.
Under 15 – Combined Events
This was a second award for Alanah Thoresby who made her combined events debut in 2017 at the North East Schools championships where she was in action in the pentathlon. She acquitted herself really well taking 6th place in a field of 22 athletes.
Under 13 – Sprints
Both of the winners in this category are in their debut season with Kingston, the boy’s award went to Zach North who was selected for three of the junior team’s league matches and the girl’s winner was Libby Hakney who also gained selection for the junior team and competed in the sprints in two league meetings.
Under 13 – Hurdles
Jessica Waugh was the winner of the girl’s award, she covered the 70 metre hurdles for the junior team in the UK YDL fixtures and helped out in the high jump, shot and 800 metres whenever needed. Thomas Iversen was the boy’s winner, he ran the 75 metre hurdles for the junior team and also turned out in sprints and high jump.
Under 13 – Middle Distance
Finlay Southcoat picked up the boy’s award he competed in all of the junior team’s league matches where he ran the 800 and 1500 metre races and also covered the sprints and shot putt when required. The girl’s winner was Meabh Brannigan who ran the 800 metres race in three of the junior team’s league matches.
Under 13 – Cross Country
The boy’s winner was Thomas Smales who had a busy cross country season, he took 6th place at the County championships and 9th at the County schools. He was the bronze medallist at the Barton & District open meeting and also ran at the British inter counties and the English schools championships. Lauren McClean took the girl’s award, she was placed 10th at the County championships and also ran at the British inter Counties event.
Under 13 – Throws
Alex Chivers won the boy’s award, he was the shot gold medallist at the County championships and covered both the shot and javelin throws for the junior team. The girl’s winner was Izzy Watts who competed for the junior team in javelin and shot and covered 800 metres and high jump when required.
Under 13 – Jumps
The boy’s award went to Toby Greensmith who was the gold medallist at the Independent Schools championships. He competed for the junior team in the high jump and 800 metres. The girl’s winner was Lucy Parker who was a long jump finalist at the Northern indoor championships and in the track & field season she competed in the sprints and long jump for the junior team. Her season was curtailed by a persistent injury.
Under 11 – Sprints
The winner of the boy’s award was Noah Sibary who made his club debut in 2016 and has made good progress. 2017 has seen him win both sprint titles at this year’s County Championship meeting. The winner of the girl’s award was Freya Vidal who has also been improving throughout this year, she won the sprint double at this Mays County Championships. This was the last season in the under 11’s for both Noah and Freya who now will move up to the under 13’s in 2018.
Under 11 – Middle Distance
Noah Sibary collected his second award of the evening this time in the middle distance category. He ran ten 600 metre races in 2017 winning nine of them and his biggest victory was the gold medal at the County Championships. 2017 was the second competitive season for Emma Hoggard who is a middle distance and cross country runner, this year she made her debut appearance in the UK YDL League, gaining selection for two of the team’s matches. She made her major championship debut at January’s Northern indoor event where she took 5th place in the 800 metres final.
Under 11 – Cross Country
Emma Hoggard returned to the stage this time to collect the cross country award for good performances at the County Championships, the Barton & District Open as well as the Cleethorpes beach terrain race. The boy’s award went to Finlay Southcoat for his performances at the Scunthorpe Open, the Sheffield Open and the Barton & District Open, but especially for his silver medal winning performance at the County Championships
