Annual ‘Tom Pink’ Field Events and Relays
EIS Stadium Sheffield – Saturday 10th March 2018
The annual Tom Pink Field Events & Relays were held at the English Institute of Sports indoor stadium in Sheffield on Saturday 10th March. This year’s competition marked the 11th year that the event has been held at the English Institute of Sports Stadium, and as usual there was a big turnout of young athletes from clubs throughout Northern England.
The Tom Pinks is a competition for children who compete in the under11 and under 13 age categories and the event is one that the younger athletes at Kingston upon Hull AC look forward to with relish. Coach Jo Townsend got together 24 young athletes from the clubs junior training groups to compete for the Kingston team at the EIS and with help from parents and other volunteers she managed and inspired them on the day of competition.
There were three outstanding individual performances in the field events from members of the team. Alex Chivers was the gold medallist in the under 13 boy’s shot putt and Rebecca Westhead took the bronze medal in the under 13 girls weight for distance throw. In the under 11’s competition Zach Wilkinson was the bronze medallist in the weight for distance.
Under 11 Girls – Results
Standing Triple Jump
Freya Vidal took 7th place in the standing triple jump where she produced an effort of 5.50 metres and Scarlet Metcalf’s jump of 4.50 metres saw her finish in 17th place.
Standing Long Jump
Freya Vidal was the 5th place finisher putting in a leap of 1.81 metres and Eliza Starling took 14th with her jump of 1.51 metres.
Highland Steps
Freya Everington was the Kingston representative in the highland steps, where she amassed a total of 49 steps in her allotted time to take 14th place.
Caber
The caber must be thrown in a straight line and the further the thrower strays from the middle the less they score. Tilly Shaw-Hall was the team representative in this event and her score of 15 gave her 17th place.
Soft Javelin
Jessie Shaw and Tilly Shaw-Hall were in action in the soft javelin, where Jessie took 8th place with her throw of 10.50 metres and Tilly finished 19th with her throw of 6.00 metres.
Weight for Distance
Jessie Shaw was in further action in this event where her throw of 8.00 metres saw her take 14th place. Freya Everington finished 18th and she threw a distance of 6.00 metres.
Under 11 Boys – Results
Standing Triple Jump
Owen Foster and Lucas Starling were in action in this event which saw Owen putting in a jump of 4.90 metres to take 13th place, whilst a jump of 4.52 metres by Lucas saw him taking 21st place.
Standing Long Jump
Will Rusling was the 9th place finisher and he produced a leap of 1.79 metres and 12th place was taken by Lucas Starling with his jump of 1.64 metres.
Highland Steps
Harrison Fairburn managed to complete 57 steps in his allotted time which saw him take 6th place in the event.
Caber
This event saw further action from Harrison Fairburn who took 9th place with a score of 26. Owen Foster was also back in action and his score of 24 saw him take 15th place.
Soft Javelin
Zach Wilkinson threw a distance of 13.00 metres to take a 9th place finish and Will Rusling was 17th with his throw of 9.75 metres.
Weight for Distance
Zach Wilkinson’s second field competition saw him pick up the bronze medal with his throw of 11.25.metres for a 3rd place finish, and Alexander Tilson’s throw of 9.75 metres secured him a 7th place finish.
Under 13 Girls – Results
Standing Triple Jump
Ella Frost and Rebecca Westhead were the team’s representatives in this event. Ella took 9th place with her jump of 5.57 metres and Rebecca’s jump of 5.38 metres gave her an 11th place finish.
Standing Long Jump
Beth Moodie took 5th place with a leap of 1.93 metres and Gracie Turner’s leap of 1.74 metres gave her 10th place.
Highland Steps
Beth Moodie saw further action in this competition where she took 6th place, registering 70 steps. Charlotte Lawson took a 9th place finish with her total of 65.
Shot Putt
Training partners Izzy Watts and Lydia Moore renewed their friendly rivalry in the shot competition. Izzy took 5th place with her throw of 7.25.metres, with Lydia one place behind in 6th with 6.75 metres.
Weight for Distance
Rebecca Westhead’s throw of 11.50 metres won her the bronze medal in the weight for distance and Charlotte Lawson took 7th place with her effort of 9.00 metres.
Weight for height
Izzy Watts and Lydia Moore were back in tandem again and this time Lydia gained the bragging rights with her throw of 4 kilograms @ 4 metres which gave her 7th place, whilst Izzy took 12th place with 3 kilograms @ 4 metres.

Standing Triple Jump
Gabriel Lila-Vigars took 8th place in this event where he registered a jump of 5.88 metres, and William Fairburn’s jump of 5.53 metres gave him an 11th place finish.
Standing Long Jump
Gabriel Lila-Vigars and William Fairburn were in action again in the standing long jump where Gabriel took 8th place with his jump of 1.87 metres and William was 11th with 1.75 metres.
Shot Putt
The outstanding performance of the day by a member of the Kingston team came in the under 13 boys shot competition where Alex Chivers produced a throw of 7.75 metres which secured him the gold medal.
Relay Results
The majority of the members of the relay teams were young children, who were given the chance to run and gain experience at one of the biggest indoor junior events in the North of England. A lot of them were running for the first time in a team competition, where they gained valuable experience for the future, and did so in an outstanding stadium, at one of the biggest indoor events for youngsters in the North of England.
Under 11 Girls Races
‘Keeping up with Paula’
Fifteen teams contested the race and the fastest six teams over the three heats would qualify for the final. Kingston were drawn in heat 2 where they ran a time of 3:08.7 sec which wasn’t enough to make the final.
Over and Under Relay
Eighteen teams were in competition in this race and the fastest six over the three heats would qualify for the final. Kingston were in action in the opening heat and they covered the race in a time of 1:27.9 sec, not enough to progress further.
Under 11 Boys Races
‘Keeping up with Paula’
Twelve teams contested this race which consisted of 2 heats, with the fastest seven over the two heats going on to the final. Kingston went in heat 1 where they clocked a time of 3:04.4 sec but did not progress further.
Over and Under Relay
This relay was contested by 15 teams with the fastest seven over the three heats making the final. Kingston were drawn in the first heat where they posted a time of 1:24.2 sec which was not sufficient to go forward.
Under 13 Girls Races
‘Chasing Laura’
Fourteen teams contested this race and the fastest six over the three heats would make the final. Kingston went in the second heat and ran a time of 4:01.6 sec which was not enough to go through to the final.
3 x 2.5 lap Time Trials
Nineteen teams were in action in this time trial where Kingston provided two teams an ‘A’ and a ‘B’. The ‘A’ team finished in 11th place and ran a time of 5:11.1 sec and the ‘B’ team finished in 16th place with their run of 5:22.1 sec
Under 13 Boys Races
‘Chasing Mo’
Nine teams were involved in the ‘Chasing Mo’ relay which saw the fastest six over the two heats qualify for the final. The finalists would be the fastest six teams over the two heats. Kingston were drawn in the second heat where they ran a time of 4:06.3 sec, not enough to get into the final.
3 x 2.5 Lap Time Trials
Twelve teams were involved in this time trial where the Kingston team’s run of 5:08.3 sec saw them finishing in 11th place.
