‘Kingston Spring Open’ – Costello Stadium, Hull

Sunday April 15th 2018

Kingston upon Hull AC’s 2018 track & field season began on Sunday 15th April when they staged their annual ‘Spring Open’ meeting at the Costello Stadium. As usual there was a big turnout for the traditional event from all the clubs based around the Humber Estuary and much further afield. The club unveiled our electronic timing system which we have been saving and working towards for the last few years.

Senior Men

Three Kingston Athletes were in action in the 100 metres senior men’s race, where the recent silver medallist at the British Championship’s Andrew Morgan-Harrison was the race winner running a season’s best time of 10.79 sec, one hundredth of a second outside his personal best time he set at last year’s Northern championships, where he was the 100 metre gold medallist. The 2016 Northern 60 metre champion Joe Cooper took 2nd place with his season’s best run of 11.38 sec and Matthew Backhouse also ran his season’s best time of 11.66 sec for 7th place. Andrew Morgan-Harrison completed the sprint double winning the 200 metres in a time of 21.26 sec. Joe Cooper again took 2nd place and put in another season’s best performance of 22.88 sec. Under20 athlete David Morgan-Harrison took 5th place and ran a new PB of 23.04 sec clipping 0.98 of a second off his previous best time.  The winner of the senior men’s 5000 metres race was Gregan Clarkson who ran a season’s best time of 16:07.92 sec. Under 20 Kyle Foster competed in the senior men’s 800 metre race taking 3rd place and running a season’s best time of 2:04.14 sec. Former under 23 National hammer champion and Commonwealth Youth games champion  Peter Smith, warmed up for the coming campaign in the North of England senior league, competing in the hammer and discus competitions. The hammer saw him take victory throwing a season’s best distance of 60.90 metres. Another season’s best throw of 35.00 metres in the discus saw him take 3rd place. British Masters (V45) athlete John Twiddle competed in the hammer, shot and discus. He was the winner of the shot competition with a season’s best throw of 12.59 metres, the hammer saw him take 4th place with a throw of 38.20 metres and he placed 5th in the discus with 31.79 metres. British Masters (V40) athlete Simon Downs took 2nd place in the javelin competition where he launched a season’s best throw of 37.48 metres.

Senior Women

The 100 and 200 metre sprint races were contested by a mixture of both senior and under 20 athletes. Four Kingston athletes went in the 200 metres where the clubs most experienced female sprinter Megan Hoult was the race winner, running a season’s best time of 12.25 sec, with under 20 Venus Morgan 3rd with a season’s best of 12.83 sec another under 20 Gabrielle Whittle was 4th in a season’s best of 13.05 sec with another under 20 Chloe Constable 5th with a new PB of 27.93 sec clipping 0.37 of a second from her old time. Megan Hoult was the winner of the 200 metres race in a season’s best time of 25.67 sec, with Gabrielle Whittle 3rd with a season’s best run of 27.25 sec, under 20Natalie Varga was 5th running a new PB of 27.93, 0.37 of a second off her previous best and under 20 Lucy Savery 7th with her season’s best run of 29.64 sec. Sian Kerry was in competitive action on the field in two events. Throwing a season’s best of 24.30 metres in the javelin for a 2nd place finish. Another season’s best performance came in the shot putt where she took 5th place with a throw of 6.69 metres. Venus Morgan competed in the senior women’s long jump where she was the competition winner with her jump of 5.26 metres.

Under 20 Men

The under 20 men’s 100 metres saw David Morgan-Harrison taking 2nd place and running a new PB of 11.44 sec clipping 0.46 of a second off his old mark. Adam Coles took 3rd place in the race and he clipped 0.27 of a second off his best time running a new PB of 11.74 sec. Out on the field Adam Coles was in action in the long jump pit, the Northern indoor bronze medallist produced a season’s best jump of 6.02 metres for 3rd place. Freddie Capes had his first competitive outing of the year in the high jump where he cleared a season’s best height of 1.50 metres for a 2nd place finish. England under 18 discus champion Josh Tranmer was in competition in the throwing circle, seeing action in the discus and shot events. The discus saw him take victory with a throw of 44.75 metres, which was a new PB adding 1.16 metres to his previous best. He picked up another victory in the the shot competition throwing a season’s best effort of 12.35 metres.

Under 20 Women

In her own age category heptathlete Venus Morgan took on the javelin, shot and high jump events She was the winner of the javelin throw registering a new PB of 23.84 metres in her first competition with the heavier 600 gram javelin. The shot putt saw her take 2nd place and register another new PB of 9.53 metres with the heavier 4 kilogram shot. She was the winner of the high jump where she went clear at a height of 1.45 metres. Olivia Stevenson  the number 4 ranked hammer thrower in the UK got her season off to a flying start, winning the under 20’s hammer with a season’s best throw of 54.41 metres. Harriet Cannell opened her account for 2018, launching a season’s best throw of 30.46 metres to take victory in the javelin event. Bryony Underwood took up where she left off at the previous weekends opening Humber league meeting, winning the 400 metres race and setting a new PB of 64.31 sec which slashed 3.36 seconds off her previous best time.

Under 17 Men

Brody Hinson made his first competitive appearance since injury problems at January’s Northern championships. He was in action in the 100 and 200 metre sprints, where he was the winner of the 100 running a season’s best time of 11.54 sec. The 200 metres saw him take 2nd place with another season’s best of 23.39 sec. Kai Greaves made his club debut at the Sale Harriers indoor open meeting in January and he made his track debut at this open meeting. He ran in the 100 and 200 races, taking 4th place in the 100 metres where he established a PB of 12.09 sec. The 200 metres gave him another 4th place finish and another PB of 24.81 sec was established. Middle distance runner Harvey Roberts opened his track & field account after a good cross country season. He was the winner of the 1500 metres race where he ran a season’s best time of 4:52.31 sec. On the field the UK no. 1 ranked under 17 hammer thrower Shaun Kerry was in action in three events, he won the hammer throw with a new Personal Best performance of 63.35 metres adding 2.41 metres to his previous best. He also won the shot putt with another new PB of 13.88 metres an increase of 1.23 metres on his old mark and his throw of 41.18 metres in the javelin gave him his third victory of the day. Anthony Mould took 2nd place in the hammer where he too produced a new PB of 34.72 metres throwing 2.35 metres past his old best. Further action came for Anthony in the discus where he threw a new PB of 24.53 metres, 2.35 metres beyond his old best, which saw him win the competition.

Under 17 Women

There were two heats in the 100 metres competition followed by the final. Five Kingston athletes qualified for the 100 metre final, Alanah Thoresby and Emily Dye from heat 1, where Emily ran a new PB of 13.69 sec clipping 2 tenths of a second off her previous best. In the second heat the qualifiers were Gina De Lancey who posted a new PB of 13.94 sec, six tenths off her old time, Evie Watson with a season’s best time of 14.20 sec and Rosie Shepherd who ran 14.78 sec. The 100 metres final saw Alanah Thoresby taking 2nd place in a time of 13.63 sec, just one hundredth of a second outside her PB, Emily Dye was 3rd with a run of 13.77, Gina De Lancey 6th with 13.99, Evie Watson 7th in 14.20 the same time as her run in the heats and Rosie Shepherd was 8th with her season’s best run of 14.55 sec. The 800 metres race saw Grace Moore making her debut appearance for the club where she took 3rd place in the race and established a PB of 2:53.84 sec. The 80 metres hurdles race was won by Becky Chivers who ran a season’s best time of 13.65 sec, with Rosie Shepherd running her first competitive hurdles race taking 4th and establishing a PB of 14.13 sec, 5th place went to Abbie Haigh who hit the first hurdle but picked herself up and finished the race in a season’s best of 15.14 sec with a fantastic bruise to show for it. Five under 17 women competed in the senior women’s long jump. Emily Dye took 5th place with a leap of 4.63 metres, Evie Watson was 8th with her season’s best jump of 4.59 metres, Alanah Thoresby 10th with 4.43, Becky Chivers 11th with a new PB of 4.29, a an improvement of seven centimetres, Rosie Shepherd 14th with her season’s best jump of 3.53 metres. Alanah Thoresby was the winner of the high jump competition going clear at a season’s best height of 1.55 metres and Ellie Townsend was 2nd clearing a height of 1.50 metres. Twin sister Jess Townsend won the discus throw with a new PB of 26.74 metres a 1.07 metre increase and Becky Chivers won the javelin competition with her throw of 37.35 metres.

Under 15 Boys

Connor Pickering made his first appearance of 2018 at this meeting and he competed in the 100 metres, long jump and shot putt. He took 3rd place in the 100 metre sprint running a new PB of 14.14 sec clipping 0.26 of a second off his previous best. He was the winner of both the long jump and shot competitions putting in a leap of 4.46 metres in the long jump, and throwing a new PB of 9.92 metres in the shot an improvement on his previous best of 1.53 metres. Jack Singleton was in action in the 200 metres sprint and the 80 Metre hurdles, taking 2nd place in the 200 metres running a time of 26.97 sec. He was the winner of the 80 metre hurdles where he ran a new PB of 13.48 sec, slashing 1.39 seconds off his old time. The 1500 metres saw Thomas Smales running his third track race of the new season, he took 2.24 seconds off his previous best, winning the race and setting a new PB of 4:43.86 sec. Also competing in the 1500 metres and making his club debut was Jay Greeley who took 4th place in the race and established a PB of 5:53.02 sec. Alex Chivers established three new PB’s throwing the 4 Kilo shot 7.36 metres for 2nd place, the 1.25 kilo discus 17.40 metres for 2nd place and was the winner of the javelin event throwing the 600 gram javelin 25.52 metres.

Under 15 Girls

The 100 metres and the 200 metres competitions consisted of two heats and a final.

In the 100 metres event two Kingston athletes competed in heat one, Pippa Gouldson who took 2nd place and ran a new PB of 13.97 sec clipping 0.73 of a second off her old time to qualify for the final. Lois Richardson took 7th place in what was only her second 100 metre race and shaved 0.19 of a second off her best time setting a new PB of 14.81 sec. In heat two Daisy Logan qualified for the final, winning the race in a time of 13.20 sec just 5 hundredths of a second outside her PB, whilst Rebecca Westhead ran a new PB of 14.41 sec shaving 0.19 of a second off her old time for 3rd place and qualified for the final. Ella Frost took 5th place and established a PB of 15.04 sec and Lucy Cresswell took 7th place running a new PB of 15.87 sec shaving 0.21 of a second off her previous best. The final of the 100 metres saw Daisy Logan win the title running a time of 13.38 sec, with Pippa Gouldson 4th with her run of 14.14 sec and Rebecca Westhead 6th in 14.47 sec.

The 200 metres saw Daisy Logan winning heat one running a time of 26.77 sec to qualify for her second final of the day. Emilia Russell ran a new PB of 29.41 sec taking 0.70 of a second off her old mark for 4th place and she also qualified for the final. Ella Frost was 5th in heat one where she established a PB of 31.53 sec. Heat two of the 200’s saw Lois Richardson set her second new PB of the day, clipping 1.56 seconds off her old best with her run of 30.74 sec for 4th place, Ella Shaw-Hall took 5th place in her first 200 race to establish a PB of 30.89 sec and Rebecca Westhead was 6th in her first 200 race establishing a PB of 30.90. The 200 metres final saw Daisy Logan complete the sprint double winning the race in a time of 27.53 sec with Emilia Russell taking 6th place with her run of 30.37 sec.

Ella Shaw-Hall was in further action in the 300 metres race where she took 2nd place running a new PB of 49.08 sec an improvement of 2.22 seconds on her previous best. Also in the 300 metres Georgina North ran her first race over the distance taking 5th place and establishing a PB of 54.20 sec. Hermione Pickering slashed 5.22 seconds off her PB in the 1500 metres race, where she was the race winner and set a new PB of 5:31.48 sec. Georgina North also competed in the race, her first race over 1500 metres, she took 2nd place and established a PB of 5:58.90 sec. In the field events Emilia Russell was the winner of the high jump, going clear at a new personal best height of 1.45 metres, a 5 centimetre increase on her old best. Emilia was also in action in the javelin event where she took 2nd place with a new PB of 24.66 metres, 11.24 metres beyond her old best. Holly Adams the England indoor shot silver medallist and Northern indoor bronze medallist racked up a trio of victories winning the discus with a season’s best throw of 28.24 metres, the javelin title was secured with a new PB of 29.66 metres an increase of 2.48 metres and the shot with a putt of 11.08 metres. Esther Savage took 3rd place in the javelin with a throw of 20.96 metres, and Lucy Cresswell in her first shot competition was 6th and established a PB of 6.05 metres, whilst Pippa Gouldson set a new PB of 4.69 metres in the shot an increase of 41 centimetres for 8th.

Under 13 Boys

The 80 metre sprints were split into two heats and a final. Noah Sibary took 3rd place in heat one, running a new PB of 11.96 sec an improvement of 0.31 of a second and qualified for the final. William Rusling made his club debut in the first heat taking 4th place and establishing a PB of 13.00 sec. Zach Wilkinson took 6th place in heat two running a new PB of 13.01 sec an improvement of 0.99 sec. In the 80 metre final shaved another 4 hundredths of a second off his PB for 4th place and ran a new PB of 11.92 sec.

William Fairburn ran a new PB of 22.73 sec an improvement of 1.69s for 4th place in the 150 metres. Noah Sibary and William Fairburn both ran their first race over 800 metres, which saw Noah win the race and establish a PB of 2:28.38 sec, William took 3rd place in the race and established a PB of 2:53.89 sec. Max Wright ran his first 1500 metres race where he was the 2nd place finisher establishing a PB of 5:30.03 sec. Finlay Southcoat took 4th place in the race with his season’s best run of 5:32.06 sec. On the field six Kingston athletes competed in the long jump, where Noah Sibary took 2nd place with his leap of 4.00 metres, Nathan Hope was 3rd with a new PB of 3.97 metres an improvement of 49 cm, Finlay Southcoat was 4th with 3.71 and Ben Russell was 8th 3.39m one centimetre below his PB. Zach Wilkinson and William Rusling competed in their first long jump event, Zach was 13th and established a PB 3.18m and William 16th with a PB of 3.07 metres. In the shot putt Finlay Southcoat took 2nd place with a throw of 7.18 metres and Ben Russell was 8th with a new PB of 4.99 an increase of 1.53 metres.

Under 13 Girls

Both the 80 and 150 metre sprints comprised two heats and a final. In the 80 metres Tilly Cairns was the winner of heat one with a new PB of 11.10 sec an improvement of 0.87s, with Charlotte Lawson 3rd with a new PB of 12.10 sec an improvement of 0.52s. Both girls qualified for the final. Emily Marshall was 5th in heat one in 12.8 sec. Libby Hakney was the winner of heat 2 with a new PB of 11.32 sec an improvement of 1.21s and she too qualified for the final. Jessica Coates was 7th in heat 2 running a time of 13.05 sec. Tilly Cairns was the winner of the 80 metres final running a time of 11.13 sec, Libby Hakney was 2nd running a new PB of 11.27 sec an improvement of 5 hundredths of a second and Charlotte Lawson was 5th running a time of 12.11 sec.

In the 150 metres competition Tilly Cairns went in heat one winning the race and running a new PB of 21.32 sec an improvement of 1.60s to qualify for the final. Libby Hakney was the winner of heat two running a new PB of 21.32 sec an improvement of 1.26s, to also book her place in the final. Charlotte Lawson was 5th with a new PB of 23.25 sec a one second improvement. The 150 metres final saw Tilly Cairns complete the sprint double, winning the title with another new PB of 20.84 sec an improvement of 0.48s and Libby Hakney took 2nd place running a time of 21.33 sec.

Emma Hoggard took 3rd place in the 800 metres race running a new PB of 2:46.61 sec an improvement of 5.69s. Aimee Campbell ran in her first 1200 metres race where she took 2nd place and established a PB of 4:34.85 sec. Amy Rotherey made her debut in the same race taking 3rd place and establishing a PB of 4:41.42 sec. In the field events Lydia Moore took 4th place in the long jump with a leap of 3.66 metres, Charlotte Lawson was 5th with a new PB of 3.66 metres a 19 centimetre improvement and Jessica Coates who made her debut at this meeting was 8th and established a PB of 3.34 meres. The high jump saw event saw Izzy Watts win the competition going clear at a new PB height of 1.27 metres and debutant Emily Marshall took 2nd place establishing a PB of 1.15 metres. The Javelin and shot competitions saw Izzy Watts and Lydia Moore in action together. Both girls threw the same distance of 18.47 metres in the javelin, where Izzy was the 3rd place finisher and Lydia the 4th. Lydia improved her PB by 8.97 metres and Izzy 1.69 metres. Both girls threw new PB’s in the shot, Izzy 7.67 metres for 1st place and Lydia 7.34 metres for 2nd.

Under 11 Girls

There were two heats and a final in the 80 metres and 150 metres sprints. Georgina Smales qualified for the final of the 80 metres from heat 2, where she took 5th place running a new PB of 13.42 sec clipping 1.01 s from her old time. In the final she finished in 8th place shaving one hundredth of a second off her best with a new PB of 13.41 sec. Another four Kingston athletes ran in the heats, Holly Cresswell was 4th in heat 1 with a new PB of 14.03 sec and Scarlet Metcalf, on her debut was 5th and ran a PB of 14.12 sec, with Lucy Carr also on debut in 7th setting a PB of 15.12 sec. Eva Farley made her debut in heat 2 and set a PB of 14.51 sec.

In the 150 metres Sprints Brooke Williamson on her club debut took 2nd place in heat 1 and qualified for the final, establishing a PB of 24.17 sec. Georgina Smales qualified from heat two running a new PB of 13.42 sec an improvement of 1.59 sec. Three other Kingston athletes ran in the heats. Eva Farley established a PB of 26.91 sec in heat 1, and in heat 2 Scarlet Metcalf established a PB of 29.50 sec and Lucy Carr a PB of 30.07 sec. The 150 metre final saw Brooke Williamson take 4th place running a time of 24.27 sec and Georgina Smales was 8th in 26.11 sec.

The 600 metres race saw two girls who were making their club debuts, Lydia Greenwood took 4th place in the race and established a PB of 2:15.53 sec, whilst Freya Everington was 7th establishing a PB of 2:18.45 sec. The long jump competition saw Brooke Williamson take 2nd place and establish a PB of 3.44 metres, Holly Cresswell was 9th with a season’s best jump of 2.81 metres and Tilly Shaw-Hall on her club debut established a PB of 2.50 metres for 10th place. Scarlet Metcalf established a PB of 2.29 metres for 11th place. Holly Cresswell took 4th place in the cricket ball with a throw of 16.58 metres.

Under 11 Boys

Harrison Fairburn ran his first sprint races at this meeting, taking 4th place in the 80 metres race and establishing a PB of 12.87 sec. Cole Williamson made his club debut in the 80 metres where he established a PB of 14.07 sec. Harrison Fairburn took another 4th place finish in the 150 metres, establishing a PB of 24.44 sec. Cole Williamson also competed in the long jump where he took 5th place and established a PB of 2.72 metres. Reuben Williamson made his club debut alongside his twin brother Cole and Harrison Fairburn in the cricket ball competition, where all three boys established PB’s. Harrison Fairburn took 2nd place with his throw of 24.29 metres, Cole Williamson 3rd with 18.36 metres And Reuben Williamson 4th with 18.29 metres.
